@leo I sort of win the bet, but we never set the amount!

leo,
@leo@twit.social avatar

@glennf You definitely won the bet. Overperformed in fact. Tell ya what, you can take the dinner in Paris I won from Scoble when he bet that Apple would make a clear iPhone. He still owes me.

jann, to ai
@jann@twit.social avatar

@leo is to what used to be/still is... takes up a LOT of time on the show, but with the way it is now, we know it isn't good for our society.

leo,
@leo@twit.social avatar

@jann I understand how you feel - imagine how I feel! But we cover the stories that are news. And I think it's fair to say AI is news. Just as Elon was. Don't worry, this too shall pass.

leo, to random
@leo@twit.social avatar

Wow you were right @glennf - no not about the stupid Apple nerd helmet - about Jeopardy Masters! Just watched S1E1 on Hulu and James Holzhauer going all-in TWICE on the Daily Double in Double Jeopardy is EPIC!

@glennf@twit.social avatar

How is AI detection going to work when we can’t even filter out spam 95% of the time?

leo,
@leo@twit.social avatar

@glennf I think we, as tech journalists, need to remind people that computers aren't "smart." Ever. They can operate quickly enough to appear smart-ish, but it's nothing more than a parlor trick. AI is just the most recent example of this. It's nothing more than Eliza on steroids. It is NOT thinking, and never will.

glennf, to random
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@leo With Apple allegedly on the verge of announcing an AR (or AR/VR) headset, my specific denials of this happening are on the record! I said I thought it was plausible they would release a loaner version to developers, as they did with previous advanced Mac and mobile hardware, but that the version developers saw might not reflect the actual release. Developers might also get a Mac-anchored device for testing that isn’t mobile at all. Still skeptical Apple will ship a $3,000 waist-hung lump.

leo,
@leo@twit.social avatar

@glennf I’ll agree with you it’s a terrible idea. But that doesn’t mean Apple’s not going to do it. Shall we have a friendly wager?

leo,
@leo@twit.social avatar

@glennf Hmmm. If Apple just talks about a mixed reality headset without putting it on sale it's kind of moot. In fact, I think that's the most likely thing for WWDC. I do think they'll offer it for sale this fall, though.

leo,
@leo@twit.social avatar

@glennf @tbw June 5 is going to be interesting. Is it fair to frame it as a struggle between the design team that really doesn't want to release the headset, and upper management that desperately wants a sequel to the iPhone?

leo,
@leo@twit.social avatar

@glennf @tbw "Apple rarely ships inelegant products." ?? How about Stage Manager? The Touch Bar? iPod socks!

Due to a second huge influx of spam from mastodon.social I am now limiting mastodon.social access to twit.social.

Nothing changes for users that already follow, or are followed by, users at mastodon.social.

To prevent spamming, new accounts coming from mastodon.social will have to ask for permission to follow or message anyone at twit.social.

We are NOT defederating, just limiting. This should solve the spam problem without disconnecting you from the accounts you follow.

25 years ago today a minor cable channel named ZDTV (later TechTV) launched. https://youtu.be/9GjuA-sO9Bk

Shame on CNN. That was disgusting.

In the words of Garry Kasparov:

Today I received an unprecedented 123 reports from twit.social users who had been targeted by crypto spam. The spam accounts all were from mastodon.social.

I've suspended all the spammers that you reported - thank you! - but now we're going to have to keep an eye on mastodon.social. I know it's the default Masto instance, but it's up to them to prevent the mass creation of spamming accounts.

Otherwise I may have to block the instance.

The more I use Bluesky the more I appreciate what we have here.

I found @leo and the gang, while getting exasperated with the Vergecast, there seems to be enough there to keep me occupied while on my daily drive. I am an ancient tech guy from the times of PDP 4s and film cameras. I built my first robot 50 years ago and have been dabbling with AI in various forms for almost as long.

@paulskUK Welcome! Glad you found us!

Having spent a little time on Bluesky (leolaporte.me) I'm here to report that I'm sticking with Mastodon.

Too many people want Bluesky to replicate Twitter - and the outrage machine is already spinning up.

The ATProtocol is interesting - but I'm not sure it's significantly better than ActivityPub.

The homegrown feel here just feels better to me. More small town than big city. But I'll keep an eye on Bluesky. I'm not writing it off yet.

Based on the numbers from api.joinmastodon.org/statistics it appears that active users have finally stabilized here. This graph goes back to November 1, approximately the first date I could get the old joinmastodon stats from @internetarchive

I know these don't match @mastodonusercount for total users, they probably check different server lists than joinmastodon

leo,
@leo@twit.social avatar

@justin @internetarchive @mastodonusercount Perhaps but sign-ups here just got a bump from Elon's Weekend of the Blue Checks.

I'm thinking we're headed for another uptick.

I can't help but notice many toots from helpful newbies encouraging you to support the Mastodon Patreon.

It's fine to do that but understand it goes to just two big instances and the official Mastodon dev team.

It does NOT trickle down to YOUR instance. If you want to support your server, donate to it directly. Nearly all the costs of the explosive growth of the past few weeks is borne by local instances.

Mastodon is decentralized. There is no Mastodon Inc. This is not Twitter.

First! 😀 Only. 🤔

Welcome to the new TWiT Mastodon Instance! It's like Twitter but open, federated, and dedicated to TWiT Fans. My new handle is @leo - see you there!
