I recently worked with someone with 10 years' experience in who thinks dependency management doesn't matter. He didn't even think it was worthwhile to just ensure we were all using the same versions of things.

I don't get it. It took me mere months to break an R script by carelessly updating packages - how did this guy make it to a decade with no mishaps?

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@underlap Good question! I'm not sure. The one time a version change caused a problem for me, the script failed crankily. Then I became more careful and it hasn't happened since. So I haven't seen enough mishaps to know if some "silent but deadlies" sneak through. :)

*** Going all-in on Linux ***

I'm getting rid of Windows.

I'll never hassle others for keeping it as their daily driver. There are practical costs, and pressure to yield to industry norms.

But right now, I'm largely free of those constraints. There will never be a better time to go "all-in".

I'll still occasionally need a Windows VM, because I can't entirely unshackle myself from reality. But I will be in control of my machine - not Microsoft. And that's a happy thought. :)

@brodriguesco I haven't decided. There are live boots I can try, but my usual modus operandi is to make a comparison table and agonise over it. :P

Light, or light-ish, would be ideal.

I'd also like a distro that offers the "usual setup" straight out of the box: systemd, X11. I can't credibly form a view on the alternatives if I haven't spent sufficient time with the incumbents.

Jimmy Carr may be the least funny comedian ever.

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast Oh thank God. Someone had to say it.

I was able to quietly tolerate his utterly unfunny version of Countdown, until he made that infamous standup joke about Roma people. Since then, whenever he appears onscreen I involuntarily mumble like a cantankerous witch until my poor husband changes the channel.

I'll sit through anything. But not Jimmy Carr. He's many things, but he isn't funny.

Nice try, Word, but it's not happening! You can't make me put an Oxford comma everywhere.

And by the way, Word. Don't get too comfortable. This time next week, I won't need you any more.

Linux Elitism...Again - Kev Quirk:
https://kevquirk.com/linux-elitism-again

This behaviour is shameful! Flooding a request for empathy with pushback. This is no way to promote software freedom, it rightly turns people off!

Some people (not me) have had a bad experience with "Linux", we must respect that.

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@helgztech @alcinnz I'm stuck using Stupid Windows too. If I could nuke it from my laptop, I would.

And yes, if you run Windows in a VM, you're acknowledging you're still dependent on it - just like us. Why else would you deign to have it in your presence?

It must be nice to have complete agency over one's tools... :D

Finding a good tutorial on YouTube to learn how to use docker is like pulling teeth. They all have prerequisites, which means you either have to go learn about those first or just find something different. Has nobody learned to assume their viewers know nothing? Hello, does noob ring a bell?

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I'm sorry if you're not looking for suggestions, but I recently found Learn Linux TV's series on Docker really helpful. I watched it over a few lunchtimes, and now I know Docker!

He even includes counter-examples i.e. common mistakes like creating a container, putting lots of work into it, then closing it without realising you haven't made it persistent.

Early on in dating my future wife, I noticed that even though she's objectively brilliant, she doesn't pay a whole lot of attention to her environment. One of my favorite things to do is randomly buy her flowers and place them somewhere in plain view in the house and see how long it takes her to notice them. We're going on day 3 right now for a bouquet on the kitchen counter. 💐 🤣

I remember back in college in the 90s having a lot of difficulty with the required length of writing assignments. I used all the tricks of squishing margins and larger font to make whatever it was I wrote look like there was more to it than there was. Now, I'm in college again in the 20s, and I have writing assignments. I don't know if the requirements have changed or I have, but writing assignments of at least 300 words? I can write you 300 words about my breakfast. Maybe I just talk too much.

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike Oh god, same. I struggled to meet the required word count in undergrad, but now I'm regularly writing 5000 words for a 3000-word report and panic-culling 2000 of them. Thank goodness for appendices?

I love the Notes feature in #Vivaldi. Seriously, I use it all the time. Sometimes I just add quick notes in a panel. Sometimes I tile a full tab with another page so it's more of a full sized document. When I change computers or even fire up @Vivaldi on my phone, my notes are there. I can do formatting and even embed images. Seriously, it's hard to overstate how useful this feature is to me.

I need a bunch of historical weather data. After some dead ends, I've found Open-Meteo:

  • years of data
  • hourly observations
  • all the metrics, even weird ones
  • downloadable as CSV
  • API available
  • free for non-commercial use

I'm in total shock. This is the greatest service of all time, and it's been right here all along --> @openmeteo

Sometimes you sprinkle a little extra masala on something, to make it more palatable, to draw interest.

But if you overdo the masala, you'll make everyone sneeze. Your something will become an irritant, and people will hate and avoid it.

@grueproof Yes, it's a clumsy metaphor that I've stretched way too far. Maybe I'm guilty of what I'm complaining about: over-egging the pudding. :)

(Incidentally, the above idiom would have sufficed if I had just thought of it last night!)

My knowledge of could be better (read: it’s atrocious) can anyone recommend any resources for learning PHP for absolute beginners? I’m not a developer, I know a little html/css, nothing about JS and enough PHP to be dangerous.

Any recommendations welcome - happy to pay for them too. 👍

We developed the habit of spelling W-A-L-K each time we want to say "walk" because if JJ hears the word, he leaps up, runs to the door, wags his tail and waits.

Could you say no to this face?

I think he now knows what "W-A-L-K" means because I spelled it out, and he's by the door demanding a you-know-what.

I guess I'm going for a walk.

Final exam completed, and it looks like my GPA is intact. The hardest part of the class I think was using the virtual computer simulator. Didn't strike me as "intuitive". The first time I used it I was supposed to install a couple SATA drives. Took me 20+ minutes to find the drive bays. Not install anything, just find the bay the drives were supposed to go into. Even on my final, I accidentally uninstalled an entire motherboard instead of the graphics card I was aiming for. Never done that IRL.

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@mike Congratulations on getting through your assessments - especially with the software getting in your way. I really, really, understand what that's like hehehe.
