What's a good top-level domain for a data person who likes programming and math/stats, and has opinions on software things?

@benjaminhollon Thank you! It's for a blog that might evolve. I have a .com at the moment.

As an aside, your blog is really interesting. I just read your post on managing your music collection in-terminal.

The fastest way to get me to put a book or story down is to over use exclamation points! I hate it! Don't do it! If every sentence you write ends with a bang, then there is no impact there!

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@thelinuxcast I overuse bang and bang-bang, but edit most of them out before sending/posting. :P

But I continue to overdo "lol", "hahaha" and :P, and I can't seem to stop.

@Nour There's an episode of Duck Tales in which Scrooge goes 40 years into the future and finds out that everything in society is run by one company.

It's not normal to get all twinkly-eyed about such a future. It's actually super weird! Someone should check if these mega-CEOs are capable of emoting lol.

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic Interesting to see recommendations for cotton+spandex. I sew, and this is one of my preferred fabrics! I also happen to experience a high degree of discomfort in clothing.

I couldn't bear to wear more than one layer until I was about 30. I froze though many winters. These days I can manage it if the inner layer is fitted, and the outer layer is loose - preferably oversized (if it's not touching you, it can't annoy you lol).

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic If anything, it can be kind of kind of annoying! The stretchier it is, the more it wants to slither away. But it's worth it because the little bit of spandex makes it fit around the body's contours rather than fighting them. So I squirm less!

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic It is :)

It also helped me to learn that my body isn't a "problem", it just needs clothes that fit better.

The wildest bullshit I've heard yet:

At a union meeting, talking with someone from a different department. IT revoked superuser privileges from all their work computers so they have to submit a ticket EVERY TIME they want to sudo. They said they have an outstanding ticket to install adobe reader, and in the meantime they CAN'T OPEN PDFs.

usually when I try to talk about how digital impacts every part of our working conditions I'm talking about larger problems like how the deinfrastructuring of our communication systems makes it so publishers become the only venue for our work, which structures our incentive systems and patterns of work from top to bottom. This is way beyond that tho, the very basic ability for information workers to interact with information at all.

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@jonny As a public school teacher, I had more control over my work-issued laptop than the tech people I knew.

I once got in trouble for showing my colleagues how to edit the registry - THAT'S how much we could do to our own devices. :D

(I swear I had a reason for committing this cardinal sin!)

i liked this "Tailwind and the Femininity of CSS" article -- it took me a long time to understand how important CSS is and that it's not less "serious" because it's different from other forms of programming https://thoughtbot.com/blog/tailwind-and-the-femininity-of-css

(Tailwind actually really helped me learn CSS and I still like it, but I might move away from it as I get better at CSS)

@b0rk Great read, thanks for sharing. The behaviour described is very familiar to me - people who trash because it's not "real". But the truth is, they got to the tutorial on and noped out, and they just want to feel better about it lol.

I have a theory with 5 hypotheses.

I pilot a study; only 3 of the 5 seem correct.

I preregister only these 3 and proceed as if I never considered the other 2.

I find strong support for all 3.

Is this good science (i.e., an appropriate use of preregistration)? Why or why not?

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@CarlisleRainey Can a pilot study be used to eliminate hypotheses? If so, then why proceed with a full study? (I ask this, not knowing what a pilot study even entails!)

Also, wouldn't you pre-register before the pilot, not after? (Again, I don't actually know how this works!)

Looking forward to seeing the answers and learning something. :)

I've always been confused about where the expectation that geographical relevance is cause for a content warning originated. It's annoying enough that CWs are widely misused across the fedi as is.

Like any social phenomena I don't expect there to be a clear cut answer. Seriously though, of all the warnings you've seen recently - how many were actually about a subject that is truly NSFW, harmful, or potentially traumatizing?

lulu_powerful,
@lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

@ascott When I was new here, every single CW pic was food or something else innocuous.

So anyhoo, I ventured into the global feed, saw a CW pic, and thought nothing of clicking on it.

This time, the pic was exactly what the guy implied it was. Woops. :P

    Looks like I'm gonna have to learn to code in R for analyzing experiment data from simulated evolution and real world cell cultures.

    R for Data Science looks like a good book on the topic, but any other recommendations I should check out?

    @ngaylinn I recently bought some books from https://leanpub.com/. Some of them you can download for free, and others ask for a relatively small minimum payment. :)

    Here's our position on the "Facebook joining the Fedi" mess...

    https://hub.fosstodon.org/facebook-fosstodon-fedi

    lulu_powerful,
    @lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

    @fosstodon I think Meta will try to eat the fediverse from the inside, like a cancer.

    But I also trust that the admins' only agenda here is to run a safe, interesting and sustainable instance.

    So I'm concerned (insert a Marge Simpson grumble here!), and I would have taken a harder stance, but I guess I understand the unwillingness to ban something that doesn't exist yet. :)

    yakkoj, to random
    @yakkoj@fosstodon.org avatar

    >pre-emptive blocks of Facebook and Google on fediverse.

    sure that's not called for, but to be honest, I don't have much in the way of sympathy for them because why wouldn't they pull Facebook and Google shit when they obviously came to embrace, extend, and exterminate?

    No benefit of any doubt needs to be given.

    lulu_powerful,
    @lulu_powerful@fosstodon.org avatar

    @yakkoj @wholesomedonut In the past, I've been too relaxed about powerful entities. I feel comfort because I can't imagine what they'll do - so I assume they'll do nothing.

    But this always backfires! They always destroy things.

    They rely on the naivete of nice, accommodating, people. But I'm done being nice. Let's block Meta precisely because we don't know what they'll do. Because whatever it is, it will be worse, and more damaging, than any non-psychopath can anticipate.

    @ojala In my postgrad program, there's no discussion about this at all. People think is R.

    Some package documentation seems to encourage careless use of resources too. If you use the recommended setup for in R, it will install and point to an entirely new python env with tensorflow - when you could just point it to the python and tensorflow env you've already got.
