Watching Linux distros (and yes, it is usually Debian packagers who act the most sanctimonious) shoot themselves in the face and then insult upstream AND the users of a popular package under the delusion that only the distro's self-declared experts are capable of making decisions is always a good reminder as to why you will never be able to waterboard me into using Linux as my primary desktop. Very sorry this is happening Team KeePassXC. https://fosstodon.org/@keepassxc/112417353193348720

@film_girl From a "bug" report linked in the replies to @keepassxc's toot:

> Kepassxc provides a cmake option (-DWITH_XC_NETWORKING=OFF) to disable networking support(like download the favicon something). I believe most of the people don't want their password manager to connect somewhere they don't know and it will improve user privacy.

Wonder how long it's been since these people used a computer. So strange.

After my first month of daily oral (buccal) ketamine treatments, my GADS scores for both anxiety and depression are pretty dramatically improved. They say there's still a lot of room for improvement, but I take comfort in knowing that it's actually helping (or that I've gotten better at gaming GADS scores)

I keep seeing people talk about using generative models with very low accuracy and success rates. I have to resist the urge to point out that with rates that low, it’s possible they’re just seeing randomness in action and the feeling of productive utility is down to their own perception

mambocab,
@mambocab@alcove.website avatar

@baldur I knew I'd seen this idea elsewhere and almost sent you a link to your own LLMentalist Effect piece. "LLMs structure their output like cold reads" has been a very useful idea for me lately.

Starting to wonder if AI is like spreadsheets: for every programmer pointing out flaws and deficiencies, a double dozen people are using 'em to do something they find useful. 1/4

Added: please see https://mastodon.social/@gvwilson/112265751571981599 for clarification.

mambocab,
@mambocab@alcove.website avatar

@gvwilson One interesting difference between the two cases: the utility of spreadsheets is well-established in a number of areas, and you could go to lots of different environments to learn techniques and best practices for using them.

I don't think the same is true for LLMs. e.g. Willison is, as far as I can tell, pioneering LLM coding practices, not codifying them. That alone would put you in a tough position if you were interested in teaching it.

We want a wake-up light replacement: these things that start increasing light brightness before the alarm. Would be good if it doesn't sound like a tin can.

(The previous tin can died today after ~6 years of service 🪦🫡)

I do not want an app that can get obsolete and brick the device. I don't want to bring the phone to my bed. No subscription. Preferably real buttons instead of touch.

Anyone having something like this? Can't find honest non-affiliates 😭

mambocab,
@mambocab@alcove.website avatar

@ctietze I'm in the US so I can't vouch for availability where you are, but this is what we have: https://www.usa.philips.com/c-p/HF3650_60/smartsleep-sleep-and-wake-up-light

Works well, has a variety of sounds, produces good light and a good volume of light. It's more expensive than I remember it, though (maybe we got it as a replacement for a different model under warranty? The details are fuzzy). But if you are in the market for a good one, this is a good one.

mambocab,
@mambocab@alcove.website avatar

@ctietze also hey, while we have a thread open: your writing on knowledge work, your writing on the ZK, and The Archive itself have had a lot of influence on how I work and think. I'm better at writing prose, writing code, participating in therapy, thinking -- lots of stuff -- as a result. Really appreciate it.

@imyke @CGPGrey Hey guys! I just got my Sidekick and love the form factor and construction. But I'm having a hard time figuring out ways to use the half-checkboxes. I eventually found the theme journal video discussing generous partial credit, which I like, but took some digging to find.

@imyke @CGPGrey So small bit of feedback -- I think you might be assuming that everyone buying the notebook has consumed a lot of your content. And that was me 18 months ago! But today I am not super-plugged in; it's a different season of my life. I'm buying your stuff because it looks useful, and I trust you and like spending my money with you.
