Question for fellow @actuallyautistic and @actuallyadhd neurodivergent folks:

How do you explain your ideas to neurotypicals?

I constantly struggle because my brain has made connections that are not obvious to others, and when I try to guide them through my thinking I confuse them with details or by skipping explanations that seem obvious to me but completely surprising to anyone else.

Frameworks, links, anything is appreciated!

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I’ve also been told that my explanation style leans too far into being bottom-up (I start from details and then zoom out).

And that confuses me because well - I’m walking people through the details that helped me piece together the high-level conclusions!

I always feel like I should let people figure it out themselves, but then they get confused and frustrated and ask why I’m dumping irrelevant details on them.. 🥲🥲

@morten_skaaning okay I love all the metaphors you’ve used, that actually makes a ton of sense!

The problem with federated alternatives to centralized services (and also one of the main problems with centralized services which lead people to look for an alternative) is Discovery.

Etsy and Twitch and YouTube provide an audience, supposedly. With the right pitch (and the right advertising dollars) you can get your own slice of that audience. (For as long as the algorithm graces you, and as long as you're willing to stomach the other things your viewers will be algorithmically suggested.)

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@ajroach42 I can help actually. This is something I think about constantly and have been working on content exactly to answer that final part of how to scale curation and word of mouth.

I’d be happy to get on a call or set up an email thread to help you workshop this. Feel free to email me - Mariya(at)kalynamarketing.com

@mia I’ve been trying to explain why that way of reaching out to potential customers is creepy to other marketers using the metaphor of creepy flirting / pickup artists for ages.

But I’ll admit your joke managed to capture that way more concisely than I ever have!

@adelinej I love looking at maps of places I know. No matter what kinds of maps, even historical ones. But I love the feeling of reconciling the map and that abstracted out, systematic, zoomed out view with the experience I have of a place and a mental map that I’ve developed of it.

I spend hours looking at maps of places I’ve lived earlier in life or visited years ago

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@adelinej yes those are so so so cool to see. I love looking at old photos of places I’ve lived for the same reason.

The more I learn about of the Soviet Union, the more I realize just how much my native was actively stifled, prevented from developing and innovating, and forced into this image of a backwards and hopeless nation.

Our people have always been so phenomenal, talented, ambitious, kind, and creative. But they’ve been punished, scared, and intimidated into a terrible subservient existence for so many decades and centuries.

I love Ukraine, but god history is unfair.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@menelion oh yeah. So so so many places.

I focus on learning about Ukraine because well I’ve got a personal interest.

But there are similar stories all around the previously Soviet countries, China, North Korea, and so many others.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

Btw this is often hard for me to explain to Westerns - I’m politically on the left, but I never call myself a communist or a socialist and I do not align with people who espouse those views.

It’s very hard to talk to people who quote Lenin and admire communist regimes without having lived there or having had their families killed by them for not falling in line.

Capitalism does, unfortunately, have a lot of good to it.

Like I resonate with arguments about consumerist waste, of course I do. We don’t need to buy new phones every year or get cheap clothes that fall apart after 2-3 months, or waste our money on software subscriptions for every single thing.

BUT. I’ve seen the other side. When I was little my hometown still hadn’t really Westernized. I remember the day our first ever supermarket opened.

And a life without ANY consumerism is a miserable one.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

Not having any choices in what to buy or own takes so much pleasure out of life.

I remember when we first moved to the Philippines, walking around giant supermarkets and toy stores and book stores and clothing stores with my jaw on the floor.

The colors, the possibilities, the methods for self-expression. I felt so free for the first time.

Maybe that’s why I love marketing - I remember how cool I thought ads were.

If I were to force a label on myself, I’d say I am left-leaning and support highly regulated capitalism.

I’m against shareholder capitalism and pursuit of short-term quarterly profits, or the concept of stock buybacks.

I’m against corporations dismantling unions and worker rights, or exploiting foreign resources, or greedy cost cutting in product quality.

But I am pro private business and entrepreneurship. I’m pro long-term sustainable growth and economic prosperity.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

I’m not an economist so I’m sure I am getting things wrong.

But my fundamental principle in politics and my life philosophy is the pursuit of long-term freedom and happiness for the largest number of people possible.

Some people need to be restrained because their greed and selfishness means their happiness costs too many others their freedom.

Corporations destroying the planet means short-term profit but long-term destroying freedom for us all.

Etc.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@menelion oh I didn’t realize! Героям слава ☺️

Yes - fully agree. I love learning about history but god my heart hurts for so many people who needlessly suffer…

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@jon404 yes! That’s also why I kind of hate these labels of “communism”, “socialism”, and “capitalism” - they were made up over a hundred years ago by a couple of white dudes who had good observations but who weren’t some all-knowing gods.

They got a lot of things wrong AND the world has changed. I feel like we need new labels but coming up with those is tough

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

I’m so curious what y’all on Mastodon will think about my thoughts here - I know that “capitalism” is kind of a dirty word for many of us here.

And I don’t disagree with most political views I see in the Fediverse - I agree a lot more often than not!

But I wanted to add a bit of complexity that I notice is hard for a lot of people from better off countries to grasp.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@quinta oooh thank you

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@maxleibman exactly!!!

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@gardenvarietylinguist yep, and I guess for me the “regulated” part is a catch all term that includes the sense that certain industries should be so regulated they are no longer really private.

I think more aspects of our societies need to be viewed as public good and taken out of the profit motive, for sure

The flip side to “Europeans are lazy and don’t work hard” is that we’re able to maintain a modern society with a high standard of living while still being able to spend time with our families. And why kill yourself through overwork when most of the rewards go to somebody else, anyway?

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@baldur as someone who lives in the US and is externally living out the full “American dream” I am sincerely jealous of the cultural difference between American and European work styles.

Rest makes us better at our jobs. Time off makes us more productive. Being with family and friends helps us be more creative.

There is literally no downside to a more balanced lifestyle, and while I’m seeing people around me starting to buy into the idea we are still so far behind most of Europe…

Agencies have figured out that "customized COTS” means "expensive custom software that you don't actually own,” so vendors have started calling it "configured COTS." The problem is that some commercial software is extensively configurable by customers, and it can be tough to know which is which.

Here's the test to apply: Can the software be "configured” by the customer or any vendor of their choosing? If "yes," it's legit. If "no," it's just expensive custom software that you don't own.

mariyadelano,
@mariyadelano@hachyderm.io avatar

@waldoj aaah I kind of forgot that was a thing…
