A financial planner I haven’t talked to in 20 years emailed to thank me for something I’d written on my blog which was super nice but they opened their email with “I just read your substack and it was wonderful” and now I’m a little mad to hear the nazi-loving email service is a generic phrase synonymous with “personal essays” in business people’s minds already.
I wish I could tell my ten year old self reading Omni Magazine and sci-fi short stories that in 2024 shit will actually get a little weird, like that time solar flares caused our robot tractors to not plant seeds at the right time, jeopardizing our food system https://mastodon.social/@jasonkoebler/112428406876457168
In March of 1997 WIRED Magazine published their cover story on how browsers might soon disappear as everyone would prefer stuff pushed to them instead of discovered via following links.
It was widely panned and browsers are still very much alive today but I have to say when I look at Instagram and TikTok, those are all-Push content apps and maybe WIRED got it a little bit correct?
to my naked eye I can see a faint purple and greenish hue to the northern dark skies but an iPhone photo totally amps up everything to an almost dreamlike quality. This is unedited straight out of the phone while it sat on a fence post.
Don’t see any actual movement or flare ups, but will try again in a couple more hours.
life at my house got infinitely easier when we implemented two things a few years ago:
the house scissors are always in the silverware drawer over on the side in the house scissors spot, and they're returned quickly after each use
The laundry room has a shelf for a tape measure. In our garage toolbox, there's a drawer for another tape measure. There's always a tape measure in those two places
I just remembered we also have The House Flashlight Spot in a cabinet near the front door where there is always a fully charged flashlight, which comes in handy once every few months.
Cosmic Sans by Cory Wong showed up on random. No idea who this person is but the bass SLAAAAPPPPPS after the 1min mark. Just plain great instrumental funk https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=rd4ng8X1xiY
Don’t Change by INXS from 1982 when they were a little band from Oz discovering synths and trying to sound British new wave and not yet blown up into a huge stars https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=uNW6YnIAa0o
Not gonna lie: whenever I see people in public recovering from knee surgery and they get those kick scooters with the knee holder on them, it’s cool as hell and seems like a way more fun and efficient transport.
In 2003, a friend ran her first 5k and raised money for a great cause, Guide Dogs for the Blind and I gave $20 happily. To this day, Guide Dogs mails me postcards every few months, no matter how many times my address changes. Today I got this text from the nonprofit 21 years after my sole donation.
My point is Customer Relations Management (CRM) software like Salesforce is too good at what it does and must be stopped.
Someone contacted me about a blog post I wrote around 2004 about a 1993 issue of Wired I bought on eBay back then that they desperately need today and I probably still have it in a storage box sitting with old office things.
Given the current state of Google Search, I’m amazed they found any part of this.
