- a ground zero for so much, but why so many cowrites for kevin ayers & so few lead vocals? is it like the neil-young's-voice-was-too-weird-for-the-springfield thing or just cuz ayers was the new guy? and how many steps between "we did it again" & oneida's "sheets of easter"? @Corry342 @vinylrecords

@HailsandAles I have been known to do this from time to time... So, what did you get?

My most recent GD purchase was a 50th anniversary pressing of Ace. I still need to get the last box of the Fillmore West 1969 run to complete my set. I have been procrastinating!

- decent audience-recorded of the flo & eddie era mothers' hometown debut at santa monica civic, august 1970, misdated as el monte '71. totally dig kaylan/volman as front-mothers, increasingly less into the mud shark skit sequence, here in early draft, a premonition of my least favorite . stunning & fun kornyfone art. @vinylrecords

Ahh... to be 18 yo, freshman in college, a local show, small venue, on Good Friday, four-twenty (though I didn't partake!), a beautiful spring evening, second row seats, my sixth show, my first Morning Dew. One of my favorite shows attended and immortalized as Dave's Picks 35. On this day 40 years ago...

Hey I just got laid off, anyone got a job? Sadly I'm just a manager recently but I'm superb at it. Glad to work outside of tech. Whee

Edit: and software designer. I kick ass at that. But mostly I translate and coordinate between different specialties to make a coherent team, turn goals into plans and then run those plans. Done a lot of hiring and professional development work too. Great at weeding out the bozos and assholes. Oversight and compliance of every kind. Would love to work for a cause

@mrcompletely @bourgwick This era was my wheelhouse for seeing shows, and honestly, the variety and novelty of that era was welcomed. We were not getting the deep jams and even lots of original material had dropped from the repertoire.

Also, Bob Weir was playing incredibly well in this era. His technique continued to progress and evolve.

SourceRolls, to random

Anyone with graphic design skill and time want to partner in a merch concept? Imagine t shirts (or hoodies, hats, etc) with images of major jam-adjacent concert venues (Hampton, MSG, MPP, Deer Creek, the Gorge, etc). They would have the original names and be done in the style of vintage concert art, including font. Why has nobody done this yet? I’ll take 5% for the idea.

Since a lot of folks don't really dig into profiles and pinned posts, and anonymous accounts understandably are viewed with suspicion by some, now and then I like to remind the TL that this account is just pseudonymous and I'm a real human named Tyler in Portland Oregon. The MrC persona is one I've had across several platforms for 15 years and keeping it is a matter of being easy to find. Plus it's a distinctly non work oriented & less political subpersonality. I'm not here to talk shop much.

A little over a quarter century ago, I was at a low point in my life. Unemployed, bad breakup, living in a run down apartment in a city I didn't like, and feeling very depressed.

With insomnia, alone on a futon, at some ungodly hour of the morning, a small clock radio provided one of my few comforts.

That night a song came on the radio that I have never forgotten. It was free jazz, avant garde, punk and brimming with energy. (1/x)

1/ After having tested it for some time, phanpy.social ( @phanpy ) is now my one and only client. The interface is sleek, and you can tell there's clear intentionality behind every single design choice.

First, look at how gorgeous nested replies look! I no longer struggle trying to decipher who's replying to what. And when you reach too many nested levels, a button gives you the choice to deploy them or not, to keep things clean.

tonymasiello,
@tonymasiello@heads.social avatar

@astro_jcm @phanpy Thank you for such a detailed write up. I have it bookmarked and I am impressed with the UI/UX so far. I love a good web experienced versus the app jungle. One feature I regularly use that I did not find is the ability to schedule a post, which is great to setup a daily or weekly series of posts when time allows.

The Grateful Dead had better songs, but the consistency of the Phish lineup, and the resulting chemistry, (plus Jon Fishman) makes Phish the better “band”.

This is also why Phish cover bands will never be as successful as Grateful Dead cover bands.

tonymasiello,
@tonymasiello@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely I agree with you on this, but for me it is more than just Garcia. The Grateful Dead functioned as a democracy. There was a push and pull that anyone on stage could step up and take part in, whether that was a musical dialog or bringing material into the band, etc.

I have certainly heard bits of that in postGD configs, but it always feels like there is a controlled space for it to happen. It is more about nostalgia than it is exploring new territory.

Chuck Mangione “Children of Sanchez”

Another from the parental stash. I’m very familiar with “Feels So Good,” which was played a lot when I grew up. This one I don’t really remember, but I’m digging the Latin jazz vibes.

@janerationx @nfl I don't get it. It is like when MLB has playoff games on MLB network or TruTV. It is a short term money grab that is going to come at the expense of a declining fan base for the next generation.

so the problem with @vinylrecords condition codes, where “good” means definitely NOT good:

on Vinted, there are sellers who know this, and sellers who do not. so I just ordered a record that’s described as “good” and I’ll only know in a couple of days whether that means unlistenable, or fine 😅

tonymasiello,
@tonymasiello@heads.social avatar

@slevelt @vinylrecords most buyers and sellers use the 'Goldmine Standard' for record grading which from best to worse condition is...

Mint
Near Mint
Very Good Plus
Very Good
Good
Fair

There are variations on this, but generally this is pretty standard for vinyl on sites like ebay and discogs.

A snowy morning and listening to The Jesus and Marie Chain’s 1987 LP Darklands. It’s peak scuzz yet restrained guitars and big 80’s drums, and melodic I-IV-I progressions that are so satisfying. Somehow this album makes me have a big smile every time I listen. @vinylrecords

- of kevin ayers's 1970-1972 sessions, including a few tunes backed by the soft machine. great / fun with assertive weirdo hooks, if sometimes (like camelot) a bit silly. his voice shares something direct/plaintive with his soft machine bandmate robert wyatt that resonates with me deeply. @vinylrecords

@bourgwick @vinylrecords I will have to track this recording down... Curious as to what Soft Machine members are on this... I pretty much lose interest in Soft Machine after Robert Wyatt leaves the band.
