I care about doing research right, disability rights, 2E kids, SFF, music & much more. Biostatistician doing pediatric HIV clinical trials, previously psychiatry research. Life's too short to specialize. Never stopped masking.

Knowing so many of you share my love of , maybe you can help me find a new one to get lost in. I just finished “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr which was beautiful.

We haven’t compiled a good reading list together in months…

What stories have you discovered or rediscovered lately? 📚

@Sheril If you like SFF I highly recommend "Light from Uncommon Stars" by @rykaaoki and the Wayfarers series by Becky Chambers as books that touch the heart.

@Teri_Kanefield how closely do you think other judges involved in his cases are monitoring his antics in NY?

@Teri_Kanefield @cdlhamma The quote I read said "Consider this statement a gag order forbidding all parties from posting emailing or speaking publicly about any of my staff."

    My non-gmail email program does this. I don't see it as nagging - I find it a helpful reminder since my ADHD brain can easily press "send" without having included a promised attachment. I wish our program at work did this - would save me some embarrassing mistakes!

    meredithw,
    @meredithw@wandering.shop avatar

    @Susan60 @ar_collins @Elizabeth3 @AqiDraco @actuallyautistic @actuallyadhd I do this when writing something sensitive, or if I haven't decided the full list of people to include.

    Also, when I want to respond only to the sender and not a whole email list, I use "forward" instead of "send" so I don't accidentally broadcast something private. It has saved me from making some serious errors.

    This was our semi-Jewish meal to celebrate the New Year: Crispy duck confit (which I did not make), with tzimmes made from sweet potatoes, carrots, beets, prunes, a Walla Walla onion, honey, and orange zest. My first homemade tzimmes ever. It was amazing with the duck. Love and life to all of you.

    Without a shadow of a doubt the single most useful class I ever took in school at any level, was TOUCH TYPING in Junior High. A room full of big old mechanical manual typewriters. Endless seemingly silly exercises.

    At the time, my thinking was that it would be useful later for writing term papers and such. I of course had not an inkling that I would essentially spend my entire career chained to terminal and computer keyboards.

    meredithw,
    @meredithw@wandering.shop avatar

    @lauren I found that even more true because when I was in college my part-time job was FORTRAN programming - on punch cards! You could wait an hour for the operator to run your program only to find it had crashed due to a typo. Being an accurate touch typist was priceless!

    meredithw,
    @meredithw@wandering.shop avatar

    @lauren And that is why during the summers I'd work weekend evenings, because my friend was weekend evening operator and would let me run my own jobs.

    meredithw,
    @meredithw@wandering.shop avatar

    @lauren In my case, the IBM 360/65. Those summer evenings are how I met my ex - the a/c in the computer room had died so the 360 kept crashing, so I was hanging out in the computer room with Fred (who was also my ride home) and an astrophysics grad student who needed the computer. Grad student and I, both from NYC, were appalled to learn that Fred from TN had never had Chinese food, so we took him to Chinatown when his shift ended to rectify that egregious gap. Early computer dating. ✨

    @isagalaev the ADHD part is when it happens for something that isn't particularly creative or demanding. It can happen for something routine; feels like my mental boots are glued to the floor and I just can't move forward.

    meredithw,
    @meredithw@wandering.shop avatar

    @isagalaev @LauraLangdon No one said anything about treatment! "Neurosparkly" is slang meaning not neurotypical in some ways - doesn't mean disordered.

    meredithw,
    @meredithw@wandering.shop avatar

    @LauraLangdon @isagalaev

    • I think ADHx is a disorder if it feels like one to you, isn't if it doesn't. I know people who don't feel like it is, and I'm cool with that for them. I just don't want them insisting I should deny my own lived experience where it does cause impairment in my life.

    • I definitely think it should be renamed for a host of reasons (including what I said earlier; it's a deficit in attention REGULATION, not attention itself).
