My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

General rule of thumb: Low gross emissions are better than net zero or net negative emissions.

Especially when those low gross emissions are across scope one (on premises), two (off-site energy), and three (supply chain).

Doubly so if those net zero/negative emissions are due to carbon offsets.

I now know of 4 friends who left Optus and got prepaid aldi sims. 3 immediately after the big breach, and one waited out their contracts and has just left recently.

You can opt to keep your number, but I chose to start fresh (given the breach and all) - and it’s my preference because it stops scams dead in their tracks.

You’re really mostly getting scam calls / texts because your number has been on the dark web for years and years. And probably is marked as “answers” or “replies”

That breach was a great thing for me, because it forced me to look at different options and think about how I use this device differently.

I went from a high data $80/month contract to a $15/month low data, leave whenever I want burner.

Change is seems scary but it can be done!

There's something deeply wrong with Labor's careerist politicians, if they think this is a reasonable way to act against asylum seekers. Sick tabloid-obsessed people.

"Marketing yourself as 'tougher' than Dutton, as someone keen to be more punitive than Dutton, more eager to rob people of their liberty than Dutton, is base politics. It does O’Neil no credit."

Labor’s migration bill: Marketing herself as ‘tougher’ than Dutton is a mistake by Clare O’Neil https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/marketing-herself-as-tougher-than-dutton-is-a-mistake-by-clare-o-neil-20240401-p5fgki.html

cmd q to quit an app is poor design, when cmd w (close) cmd 1 (select first tab) cmd a (select all) cmd s (save) are all so close.

I've remapped cmd q to something else at a system level

  1. Got my crappy, low-speed, 2013-era-liberal-government compromise internet connection sorted at my new apartment. (never forget, #auspol)
  2. Finished pulling up all the carpets, grippers and nails ready for flooring.
  3. Ate a really delicious ham and cheese baguette for lunch

Here's another example of masking sensory preferences because they're considered "childish":

One of my comfort foods is PB or Nutella sandwiches. While in Italy, I found a loaf of sliced white bread that has no crust, and I was shocked at the difference in my experience between this and normal bread with crust. It's so much more enjoyable and less stressful to eat a sandwich without crust.

It made me recall, as a kid, forcing myself to eat the crust because I would be mocked and shamed for cutting it off.

Even now, writing this, I feel a little self conscious. Like someone is going to say, c'mon, is the crust really so bad? How can eating crust possibly be stressful? You're being a wimp/making a big deal out of nothing.

In reality, it's a small thing. Yes, I can force myself to eat it. I've been doing that for 30 years. But all of those little small instances of masking add up.

Now that I'm thinking about it, I actually have a very specific way of eating a sandwich to minimize the discomfort of eating the crust.

Well... lesson learned here: find bread without crust back home, or don't feel shamed for cutting off the crust.

Using @elk you can configure Mastodon experience to not really have any content feed.

This is in addition to well-being tools, like hiding boost and like counts and making the whole UI grayscale.

And access tools like UI scaling and other tweaks like always showing the ALT label.

Anyway this is my mobile experience for now. I can compose, I can see my notifications and respond to people - but I only see the feed when I’m at my desk.
