this is where I’m coming from with for changing culture, we need to rescue the idea of change/innovation/evolution from capitalism and its bros and girl bosses. We need a working vision & definition of technology that centers long term societies oriented around life itself, not just short term profits for a few. this is def a note to self for my upcoming book lol https://fediscience.org/@steve/112486844345257840

The good news is, the AI will probably always be too buggy to reach Skynet level.

The bad news is, these fuckers are going to try and make Skynet.

One thing Mastodon (or a fork) could do to win some users over from Bluesky, is support taking your account private. It's wild that X and Threads are the only big post-Twitter microblogging platforms that allow this.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@jdp23 @kissane That's what I mean by the other stuff though - I think E2EE + some kind of certification system probably cross a reasonable threshold of safety, given that nothing is safe from, say, screenshots, regardless.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@jdp23 Again though, it seems like if an instance issued "mass deletion" commands to untrusted/unsupported instances (for any recent posts - I assume instances don't generally cache everything indefinitely?), and issued a more nuanced instruction to trusted instances that supported the procedure, it would be effectively a "shields up" move, right? And then, it could "restore" those posts later. I assume I'm missing something just trying to figure out what it is!

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@jdp23 It's not on Bluesky's 2024 roadmap, so there's a chance, but given the pace of mainline Mastodon development, that seems likely. (Obviously not a fair competition because of funding disparity, but it is what it is.)

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@jdp23 @kissane Yeah, seems like the easiest path would be to just not use standard ActivityPub at all for private profiles, only communicate with instances that support the feature. There could definitely be rogue instances though - I wonder if some kind of encryption could work? And/or a certification system for trustworthy instance operators.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@jdp23 @kissane I guess I need to review how all this works - to be clear, the issue you're raising is that instances retain data, right? So, when I load your timeline, mastodon.social isn't making a fresh request to blahaj.zone, it's loading it from a cache? How long does it keep that?

Let's imagine a hypothetical, where someone deleted all their posts, or their account altogether? How long would phantoms of it stay on instances?

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@jdp23 @kissane If mass post deletion doesn't reliably work, then that's not an acceptable state of affairs, and needs a spotlight on it. If it does, then "going private" could be the equivalent of that, except for trusted servers. Also, fwiw I was imagining separate keys for each connection ... as if they're proper DMs. Not sure what the computational overhead for that would be for people with a lot of connections.

Exciting news, the #FreshPond Beer Garden is coming back on Friday! Possibly the most charmingly uncool beer garden in the #Boston area, and therefore my favorite. #CambridgeMA

I don't want to get too carried away with extrapolations, but it's wild to see engagement on Mastodon and Bluesky blow X away, for essentially the same posts, on accounts with ~10-15% the followers.
