Not even 24 hrs after making history as the first company to mass fire workers for pro-Palestine protests, by summarily firing 28 people, Google announced that the “(ir)responsible AI org,” the one they created in response to firing me, is now reporting up the Israeli office, through an SVP there.

Seems like they want us to know how forcefully and clearly they are backing this genocide.

Collecting anecdotes, data, and anecdata on people and orgs who’ve left Twitter and found higher engagement from ostensibly fewer followers. This is in preparation for a renewed pitch to the org I’m in, to begin the process of x-trication. Boosts appreciated!

People like to say that "AI" is different from crypto in that there are actual useful applications, and that's true. But the vast majority of people you're expecting to come up with those applications are the same people who were just trying to build products on the blockchain.

Yes the constant meta (and Meta) discussion here is tedious, and often much worse, but what you have to realize is that this isn’t just a social network, it’s a left/progressive political project. I don’t know how many left/progressive political orgs you’ve been involved in, but let me tell you, they are kind of known for endless, agonizing talk about process, factions, outside threats, inside threats, strategy, grievances, etc. And if you have a solution for that, you just might save the world.

Volunteering to adopt new users who are lost or confused. Meaning I’ll recommend people to follow, and answer questions. I’ll delete this when I’ve reached my capacity, but feel free to boost or copy paste to your own accounts.

If you're in a progressive group that posts to X, volunteer to start accounts on Masto (and if you can stomach it, BlueSky and/or Threads), manually mirror the posts, and engage as needed. It's a little thing we can do to reduce the left's dependence on fascist fuel.

Well, if it isn’t me putting my money where my mouth is. It would mean a lot to me if you followed @ifnotnowboston. Even if you’re not in Boston — I plan to post and boost content that should be relevant to a wide audience. I’m really hoping to make this account succeed enough to convince the national org to get on board. Feedback welcome!

It's funny seeing people ping pong back and forth between Masto and Bluesky based on where they last got yelled at.

A lot of people claimed that LLMs were making them 10x more productive, right? So I guess we should expect some pretty amazing things pretty soon. Can't wait to see what they all come up with.

The answer to anything Marc Andreessen says, forever and always, should be "guy who lost the browser wars to Internet Explorer says what?"

It's well understood that to make the most of a place like this, without juiced up algorithms, you have to follow a lot of people. But I think another thing is that you have to keep following new people because there is a lot of churn. A lot of people have faded out but there are always cool new people to discover.

lol Mastodon during an Apple Event is about as close to a straight up Twitter experience as I’ve experienced here

A really clever thing about the human body is how, the night before something really important, it makes sure you don't sleep.

Speaking of the war on shitty Nazi platforms, I’d love to connect with anyone else who does comms or social media for a progressive/left group. Assume at the chapter level but anything is cool? We should have a group chat or something.

Love all these orgs saying "we condemn Musk and Twitter" while continuing to post there, and not even setting up a presence on any of the three admittedly flawed but still perfectly viable and also not actively Nazi replacements.

My dream is a world of bottom-up social networks, governed and shaped by the people who use them. The fediverse now isn't that, but it hints at the possibility. I think we should defend what we have, but I'll be disappointed if we never grow beyond it.

People gotta accept that we're in an ongoing power struggle with these platforms and until we start notching some wins, they're going to abuse us more and more.

Killing X, Reddit, or Substack - three platforms that dared their users to leave and so far have more or less won their bets - would do more to reign in Meta than 1000 more instances defederating Threads.
