    Its spring, so male mallard ducks in the canal here are forcing themselves pretty brutally on the female ducks again. Just had to chase one male duck off again after it was getting too brutal.

    Young kid from the neighborhood was watching, and was understandably pretty upset by the spectacle. Its really not fun to hear the female duck yell while 10 ducklings are watching.

    The kid tried to pick up an entire flower pot to throw at the male duck afterwards lol. Appreciate his mentality

    @laurenshof The other day my dad was telling me about how he’d been watching the mallards paddling together in pairs, thinking about his relationship with my mom, and… yeah, I won’t mention this to him. 🫣

    I hear instance admins and moderators "keep people hostage" on this here fedi. At least that's what some people commenting on my BlueSky-related blogpost keep claiming. Somehow always in a "free speech" context. :thaenkin:

    @Chanders I’m especially interested in the account portability stuff - having a local and/or cloud backup of your posts, separate from your instance, which you can freely import somewhere else. There are issues there with the resource demands on small instances, but these don’t strike me as insurmountable.

    @Chanders Yeah, I think this is on balance a centralizing effect, because a) most people start on large instances, and b) those who have been here a while have good reason to be wary of anything less than 100% established and well-financed.

    Watching a Columbo rerun as I review next week's schedule, as I usually do on Sunday. I've heard rumors over the years of Columbo being remade and cringed. I guess I just want Columbo to remain untouched, as Peter Falk nailed the character, and, in my mind, should always represent Lt. Columbo.

    But that's me. So, could you see another actor playing Columbo?

    @dancinyogi It might have been interesting to see Natasha Lyonne do it, but I think going for an inspired tribute rather than a literal reboot was the right choice. It definitely shouldn’t be done just to be done, but if there is an inspired idea and the right actor, I wouldn’t rule it out.

    Something that would be useful for the Fediverse is a good way to make personal collections of all the cool tools people are using. I tend to see something cool and then lose track of what it was called or where to find it. Realize this is a more general internet problem but for some reason it seems especially acute here. Commercial apps may be more apt to employ various means to make themselves more re-findable. (Email subs, catchy names/domains, phone apps, being built into the damn service…)

    I’ve been waiting for the Massachusetts e-bike subsidies to kick in, but it occurs to me, I should probably get ready by figuring out what kind of e-bike I even want. What’s a good one to start with? I don’t bike that much - though of course the hope is that this will get me biking more.

    @boby_biq There is something ... poignant? about how you notice people you haven't heard from in a while here. I guess the promise of federation is that it will all work better and we'll be able to retain our social networks (the human kind) across social networks (the other one). But we're definitely not there yet and it's a bummer.

    A lot of people don't know the difference between capitalism and ... having markets and shopping and little coops and companies in non-super-essential economic sectors that operate independently.

    Markets existed before capitalism and will exist after.

    @rednikki Well we'll see, but I got the one cold when my partner was away for two weeks with her sister, and when I picked her up last night, everyone was laid out with presumably something else. But I guess it could be the same thing, given how germs get around. 🤞
