@eniko is that viable these days? I've always looked up to Caroline Rose who compiled the first version of Inside Macintosh, I'd love to do work like that

Something "new" to explore on the workbench today: a 1995 630 in the "DOS Compatible" variant. It’s a bit of an oddball machine from Apple‘s otherwise quite bland (in my opinion) beige era. It has both a regular 68040 Mac and a full 486/DX2-66 PC inside. Should even be capable of running Windows 95 alongside MacOS 8! Thanks to a very generous donation from @markuspooch I’m going to get to play with it. Thank you!

Closeup of the same Mac with the "DOS Compatible" logo showing. The floppy disk drive slot is also visible.

modulusshift,
@modulusshift@digipres.club avatar

@janbeta think I have the original install media for this model around somewhere if it'd help you. I have a 630CD it came with, but should be the same discs

modulusshift,
@modulusshift@digipres.club avatar

@janbeta it would be the US region discs though now that I think about it. Let me know if it'd help.

modulusshift,
@modulusshift@digipres.club avatar

@janbeta that's good, my set is System 7.1.2P, for reference. I'm not sure if I've got the DOS drivers that match, tbf, though I think I have TV tuner drivers lol, not that they're much use anymore after we switched to digital TV

modulusshift,
@modulusshift@digipres.club avatar

@janbeta there is actually a slot specifically for the TV tuner! Apple went slot crazy on this model, it also has a Comm Slot II which will take a fairly rare Ethernet card if you can find it. I kinda love this model tbh, my fave after my SE/30 and IIcx. Wish I had the DOS stuff, though, hope you enjoy!

In Portal, using the portal gun to get to the moon is the obvious space travel usage, but I think people are overlooking how it'd let you trivially break the rocket equation.

Hell, you could build a >1g torchship using nothing but the ocean.

modulusshift,
@modulusshift@digipres.club avatar

@foone I don't think mass exiting through a portal imparts any thrust to the surface the portal is on, so not sure this works. but the remote fuel tank and the "infinitely falling object continuously pulls on gravitational partner" both seem legit to me. as well as the time travel implications.

I'm still really hoping one day Apple releases a simulator that matches the features of ones like the Meta Quest's (which can fully simulate a fake environment for testing, plus hands), that way not every dev interested in immersive visionOS apps will have to buy the device first

@daringfireball when your enemy is MLK's "negative peace, which is an absence of conflict, rather than a positive peace, which is the presence of justice", calling the abuse of a power imbalance "violence" is about the only way to get heard. And is it so wrong? Rescinding job offers, heck, promoting explusion, over a fairly milquetoast political statement, that you may happen to disagree with, it is real harm done to these people's livelihood and prospects.

modulusshift,
@modulusshift@digipres.club avatar

@gruber that's really generous. You're telling me that the same Israeli state happy to escort Palestinians out of their homes via armed guard, replacing them with their own citizens, as a continuous practice performed for decades now, doesn't mean any harm to the common Palestinian? Is that not violence to you? Having your home stolen at gunpoint, even if no physical harm occurs? The threat of violence used for coercion is violence, there's no ethical difference.

    ★ iPhone 15 OverheatGate Seems to Be a Nothingburger
    https://daringfireball.net/2023/10/overheatgate_nothingburger

    modulusshift,
    @modulusshift@digipres.club avatar

    @daringfireball Ironically, taking Apple at face value, the 15 Pro's increased heat dissipation may in fact be the cause of the "overheating" complaints. It could be the same amount of heat is getting generated, it's just getting to the user's hands faster, creating more easily noticeable heat spikes. The device is likely in no danger of overheating/throttling, it's just less comfortable to use. And then the question is, is that tradeoff worth it? That's what Apple engineers need to decide.

    modulusshift,
    @modulusshift@digipres.club avatar

    @gruber I dunno! Kinda depends on if any of them really are a nicer experience than Twitter was. None of them are as professional as Twitter was tbh. Which felt like a low bar at the time I admit but apparently it took more than we thought to even hit that bar at scale. The main reason most of these are nice right now is because they're filled with early adopters like us, who often hold certain cultural values in common. And there's still tons of people back on Twitter as it deteriorates.
