I'm doing some monitor shopping and am looking for recs. I do , so I look at code and browsers all day. Priority is for screen real estate and text sharpness. There's a budget, but it's sizeable enough to not be a (big) factor here.

Anyone have big recs or feelings?

My top 4 frontrunners are https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/comparison/a8752b4ad3

@xavdid I have the LG version of that 40” Dell ultrawide. I like it pretty well, though the pixel density is still not ideal for use with Apple. I find myself wishing I had the 5k2k resolution in a 34” or 38” ultrawide instead. It’s also silly expensive. Text is good on it, but still not “Apple good”. It rules for doing video and audio editing though (anything with a horizontal timeline). Also I’ve liked running D&D from it.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@xavdid That 27” Apple display is gorgeous, but a single 27” screen may feel too limiting. I also hate the stupid non-removable cord situation and that you have to pick a stand type at purchase time and can’t self-serve a change to a vesa mount.

What I really want Apple to make is a Retina ultrawide, probably in the 34-38” range.

of all the ways I thought I might be welcomed back from my time off to attend PyCon US, a promotion was not one of the ones I was prepared for

I guess I'm a team lead now :blobfox0_0:

relatedly… does anybody have favorite reading on how to lead?

@SnoopJ “The Manager’s Path” is worthwhile, and targeted at different levels so you can read the bits that are most relevant to you.

We just watched "The Life Aquatic with Steve Sizzou" for the first time. What an odd film.

mpirnat,

@tek “Ping Island/Lightning Strike Rescue Op” from the score is the perfect music to play in an endless loop when you need to be productive and nothing else is working.

@tek It’s great for those really tedious things like writing reviews.

I have spotted exactly zero other masks in my time in the Pittsburgh airport.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@basepi I mean, I don’t love wearing a mask, and I wish it wasn’t necessary for the event to be safe and inclusive for our community, but wishing doesn’t make it so.

Was chatting about at dinner one PyCon evening (pretty sure with @davidism) and it struck me today (as my “anime OP/ED" playlist was playing) that we never brought up one of my favorite Kanno works, the soundtrack.

Especially the main theme, "Moon”, whose vocal performance is credited to one Gabriela Robin…eventually revealed to be a pseudonym of Kanno herself! Turns out she can compose /and/ sing (and how.)

@joshourisman @bitprophet @davidism I made the jukebox at a bar play “Tank!” today and it was a great decision. This might be the best thing to come of the Netflix version.

@bitprophet @SnoopJ Wing was also my intro (via VHS fansubs), and +1 to the “great soundtrack” votes.

Question for friends, when do you pivot into multiple vaults?

My main vault has 100s of docs in it now, and most are from my micro blogging and random projects.

This seems to work fine, but it kind of blew up on me while trying to use my iPhone and iPad to take notes and write on the plane.

I re-synced everything sooner than later, and the writing experience was 💯 on the flight back, but it was a no-go on my flights to Pittsburgh.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@webology I keep one for work stuff, one for personal stuff, and one for each D&D campaign I’m either playing in or running.

Today is all about recovery, errands, and self care. Laundry, grocery shopping, and rotting on the couch.

So, to kick all of that off, I’m watching Top Secret!, as one does.

Inspired by a thing I saw on Reddit earlier today, I’m going to try listening to more complete albums this year. Maybe daily? We’ll see how it shakes out.

I’m starting off with the 2019 mix of Abbey Road by The Beatles: https://songwhip.com/the-beatles/abbey-road-2019-mix

139/366: Long Distance by Ivy

I’ve loved a handful of Ivy’s songs for a long time, but have for some reason never explored beyond those few. I’m glad to be remedying that tonight. Also, “Edge of the Ocean” is as perfect a track as ever.

140/366: Nothing’s Shocking by Jane’s Addiction

Didn’t manage to get to this yesterday so I’m starting off the morning with a classic.

141/366: Latent Whispers by Kite Base

I could never understand, nor figure out, why they never released anything else. It’s such a strong debut! Even the “main project”, Savages, seems to have just disappeared around the same time.
