Now that #PyConUS is over, why not attend and support a regional #Python conference?

PyCon US sold out this year, and it will probably continue to do so. Smaller, regional events are going to be a more important part of how we support the growth of our community, but we need your support -- attendance and sponsorship -- to fulfil that role.

I run @NorthBayPython (#NBPy), but there's plenty of others in the US, including fellow @ThePSF events @pycascades and @pyohio off the top of my head.

“Build Abuse Observability From Day 1”

expect abuse. You don’t have to be popular if you have these, then expect abuse will come.

AI is going to amplify this like the number of resumes it can apply for.

NEWSPAPER: good news! we replaced half our staff with a machine that automatically prints lies in the newspaper.

I met some new folks at PyCon US this year, but with so many attendees, there was not nearly enough time, and I surely missed a bunch of people. Who's doing cool stuff in the Python community that I should be following? Who's doing cool and important behind-the-scenes work that doesn't get talked about much?

(Boosts appreciated.)

If you're writing docs or example code, remember to use placeholder values that are specifically designated as such, or to use resources like domain names that you control if you absolutely must. Linking to example.com is a safer choice than a domain that someone else may own today or in the future.

What does it mean for a company to "know" that their products are harming people, how do corporate scientists convince themselves not to look at the truth, and how does that change?

Stop what you're doing and read this extraordinary story right now by Sharon Lerner for ProPublica and the New Yorker.

The bald eagle could have easily gone extinct. But we did all sorts of "woke" things protecting it legally, ran conservation and study programs, banned DDT (that was good for other reasons too) and in 2007 they were removed from the endangered species list.

Likewise pine forests could be dead from acid rain.

The ozone could have a huge hole.

We CAN take care of nature when we want to. And the successes have been worth it.

I feel like we forget this, you know?

The records you all broke at PyCon US:

  • of proposals in CFP

  • of registrations since pandemic

  • spike in new registrations (10%) so close to the conference that we had to lock it down
(I thought we'd be done breaking records at this point)
  • of toots using official hashtag during the conference @fedidevs (each day we broke our own record from the day before)

  • $ PyLadies auction proceeds

So grateful for everyone for the support and making history!! 🤩🤩🤩

The highlights of for me was the neurodivergent open space. I'd encourage anyone to do something similar at a conference that has open spaces: If you haven't found your people, but know they are there, reserve an open space for a bit for them to meet. They probably want to meet you as much as you want to meet them!

@joelle: this is an excellent description of open spaces!

BoFs (birds of a feather sessions) sounds a bit opaque, but I like that term for this reason.

Meetup organizers, brand new coders, Ruby to Python transplants, etc. Whoever your people are, it's worth putting an open space on the board to find them!

The “one more thing” at is a well-considered, realistic, totally backwards compatible plan to remove the GIL!

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

Phase 1 (we are here): optional, compile-time option for free threading instead of the GIL. Unsupported, experimental, get lots of feedback

Phase 2: support but not default. Stabilize the ABI and API, support noGIL as a build option, but not default. Could still revert if something goes terribly wrong.

Phase 3: default. Still possible to disable free threads and go back to the GIL, but noGIL is now the default.

Timeline for all of this is TBD, but, holy shit, it’s happening!
