Alright, it’s been a week and I’m calling it. This has been a great use for an old Apple TV: https://brianstucki.com/force-an-apple-tv-to-remain-as-the-home-hub-for-homekit/

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@stucki @bitprophet I am frequently baffled that Apple doesn’t just have a setting somewhere to make this easy and obvious, but then I remember that I still can’t use the explicit flag for smart playlists in Music (or even set/unset it!) and it makes a sad and disappointing sense to me.

Watched the original Star Wars trilogy with the kid this weekend and it’s been a long time since I have seen it. One thing that really stuck out to me was… what, thematically, is the movie trying to say about droids? The message seems to be that they are regular people like everyone else, and also chattel slaves, and also that’s it’s fine and also kind of funny? Like both Han and Luke are repeatedly shown doing obvious villain shit to droids and I can’t tell why we are not supposed to care

Last year while I was still employed, my employer said they couldn't fund my travel to PyCon US, so I ended up requesting travel grant from PSF and took PTO.

Decided to walk out of my job shortly after (while still at the sprints).

I was initially scared about it TBH, but day one of my funemployment, I actually felt the happiest in years.

Now they just laid off their Python team (except for one person) few weeks before PyCon US, where they're also a sponsor.

It's gonna be... "Interesting" 🧐

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@mariatta That first day feeling after leaving a bad situation is incredible, isn’t it? In 2019 I got laid off on the first day of PyCon tutorials. I knew I’d have to be in serious job search hustle mode for the rest of the conference, but even still I felt so completely liberated—almost like I was floating!

What is typical Mastodon etiquette like re: boosts vs. likes?

I’m typically a liker, but it seems like folks on Mastodon boost posts way more often than they like them.

mpirnat,
@mpirnat@mas.to avatar

@grantmc For me, boosts are “I think my followers should see this too”. Likes are a “hey cool, thanks for that” to their creator.

@jasongorman It’ll probably be like the Bush v Gore decision, with special nonsense language about how the ruling is just this once and doesn’t establish precedent.

    Started watching “Delicious in Dungeon” today, and it’s a big hit in our house. Charming, earnest, funny, absolutely delivering on the premise of “D&D meets The Joy of Cooking”. I’m a little confused, and perhaps concerned, that Netflix has it tagged as MA, given how wholesome the first four episodes have been.

    mpirnat,
    @mpirnat@mas.to avatar

    Update: Okay, I get the MA rating for “Delicious in Dungeon” now. It’s still quite wholesome but we’ve reached the “graphic violence and monsters-with-boobs” part of the story.

    117/366: Moving Waves by Focus

    I’ve adored the glorious rock madness of opening track “Hocus Pocus” ever since @reasie introduced me to it while helping out with one of my first on-air slots at WRUW, but I’m ashamed to admit it’s taken me nearly 30 years to finally listen to the rest of the album. Friends… I should not have waited.

    If I’ve timed this right, “Monday” should start right about midnight. Also, this album still rules, and it’s really fun with headphones on. Don’t think I’ll ever get enough of “Halcyon + On + On”. Also: Star Trek samples, if that’s your jam!
