I’ve never sent either of my alma maters a dime over slights a hell of a lot smaller than what Columbia University has pulled.

So, new Macbook Air M3 machines just dropped, so to speak. Saving throw vs. Shiny: won, conditionally. (I see nothing here to demand an upgrade from my M1Pro 14" Macbook Pro, but if I didn't have a laptop I'd be all in on one.)

Now waiting for the trailed iPad refresh.

@cstross When my M1 MacBook Pro reaches the end I will probably switch to the 15” Air. I’ve only been buying the Pro for the larger screen.

It’s taken 30 years, but I will finally admit that the special effects in look dated.

Compared to CGI on television today.

They still smoke anything I’ve seen on television from the 90s, and maybe even the 2000s. (The SFX on looked good, but they didn’t really do a lot with them. B5 really pushed their use of their CGI, especially for the era.)

    @Hey_Beth The Full Monty is the only movie I’ve ever walked out of the movie theater on.

    It seemed like a brilliantly made film, but everything about it is just the sort of story I cannot enjoy (for broadly the same reason I hate most sitcoms - I loathe watching people in embarrassing situations).

    If you enjoy ’s and stories where the characters have to puzzle things out to keep going (a la The Martian)…

    …AND also stories in which they have to figure things out under extreme pressure or else VERY BAD THINGS HAPPEN…

    …then Derelict may be for you. https://www.derelictpodcast.com/

    Season 1 takes place on and around underwater platforms, and season 2 (episode 2 just released) takes place on a derelict spaceship in a decaying orbit. Definitely low-pressure scenarios!

    Time to watch !

    Our first movie in a theater since the second . There are about 3x as many people in the theater as there were for that (so, about 15).

    (No, I’m not going to live-blog this one.)

    was 1000% better than I’d expected.

    If you enjoy Marvel movies, you should go see it. And if, like me, you were a big fan of and are, like I was, worried that it’s not the sequel you wanted, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

    Watching slowly lurch towards having a rich feature set is so painful to watch.

    (It just added lists, but there’s no way to remove a user in a list from the home timeline so they only appear in a list. Worse, lists show replies by users in the list, not just their original posts, so the list if littered with stuff I don’t want to read. Well, maybe next year.)

    mrawdon,
    @mrawdon@sfba.social avatar

    @mackuba That's what I mean: I want to follow them (because I am following them!), but when I add them to a list I also want to not see them in my main timeline (because I only want to see them in one timeline, the list’s).

    I treat lists as different groupings of people I follow. It's a nice convenience that I can also put someone in a list whom I'm not following, but in general the main timeline is just another list, and I should be able to follow someone without having them show up there.

    mrawdon,
    @mrawdon@sfba.social avatar

    @mackuba Heh, I had the same experience with lists on Twitter in that I could remove someone from my home timeline if I put them on a list - I guess because Tweetbot supported it (and so does Ivory on Mastodon). It's always been essential functionality for me, showing that I'm interested enough in someone to follow them, but managing my experience by having multiple lists.

    Something like 50-70% of people I followed on Twitter I followed through a list, so I'd probably have unfollowed most of my follows if that were the only way I could keep them off my home timeline.

    I guess I shouldn't really care that much, but people seem to care how many followers they have, and I don't think anyone tracks how many lists they're on.

    About Amazon's decline in recent months: I have an Amazon account I use ONLY for buying ebooks. Nothing else, ever, going back over a decade.

    My recommendations page in that account now contains no ebooks, only products from categories I never purchase, like lawnmowers (I don't have a garden) and dresses (I'm a boring cis male).

    I can't actually find any new ebooks I want to read via Amazon recommendations any more. And this seems to be an outcome of deliberate changes? Why would they DO that?

    mrawdon,
    @mrawdon@sfba.social avatar

    @cstross I realized a decade or so ago that I was using Amazon’s nice recommendations system to find new books and music, and then buying them elsewhere because their discounts on those items were very low. Not long after, their rec system went to shit.

    So I suspect one factor is that they noticed people doing this and have been trying to thread the needle to only provide recommendations to their high-profit or high-kickback items, which people are less likely to buy elsewhere.

    Most of what I buy from Amazon now are household items which are difficult to easily get elsewhere. But I’ve been trying harder to cast a wider net.

    Spent part of the day getting a 2-year-old unfinished project compiling against the current source base. Wasn’t too bad, but it turned out I’d abandoned it in the middle of refactoring the API, so that was exciting to figure out. I’m pretty sure there’s still a bunch of code in there I can just delete now.

    I’ve seen a few both-sidesers arguing that the Democrats should have rescued ’s Speakership.

    As far as I can tell McCarthy seems to be an untrustworthy weasel and the correct response by the Dems to any request from him is “Go fuck yourself.”

    I doubt the House Repugnicans will be able to find a new Speaker who’s any better.
