26/8/23: After testing pretty intensively over recent days & nights, i've decided now to give it a go as my new daily home. There's been many accounts, & a couple of ones, since i decided to venture into the Fediverse last November, but none of them quite captured the full Goldilocks essence of what i desire in a Fedi client. Will this one be it? 🤷‍♀️

2/9/23: Unfollowed all my hitherto * hashtags, as just too depressing & pointless 😭

13/9/23: I've broadly enjoyed my UX with Friendica, & admire many of its nice UI features & functions. However, i realised today that many of my posts from my venera.social Instance seem not to show up in my old Mastodon Instance. Whilst i completely recognise that Masto is NOT the Fediverse per se, it's become an important part of it, & i regard it as non-negotiable for my Friendica posts to federate more widely. Hence, from now, til further notice, my primary Fedi home reverts to @MsDropbear .

21/9/21: Ha, flip-around. Have now decided to make aus.social my new daily default [geez i seem to be very flighty!]; @MsDropbear84.

This profile is from a federated server and may be incomplete. Browse more on the original instance.

I want to create a new functionality and I need some ideas. I want to add an option to contacts, so that their posts don't appear in the network timeline anymore. But in difference to "ignored", "collapsed" or "blocked" this has got no further consequences. It is meant especially for contacts that you want to aggregate in a dedicated channel. So for example you could decide to subscribe to a lot of news channels, but you don't want to see them in the network timeline, since they post that often. Instead you create a channel for them and browse them from time to time. Same could be an option for groups or for feeds.

This filter would work for threads that are started by this special account. I would try to expand this to posts that are reshared by these accounts or by threads that are fetched, because this account commented in the thread. (The last two parts could be more challenging)

My questions are:

  • Do you think that this is a good idea?
  • Could it be done better than an option on the contact page?
  • How could this be named, so that users don't misunderstand the functionality?
msdropbear42,

@hypolite @heluecht Yes

receiving posts from ignored and blocked contacts, which then become collapsed.

I discovered this yesterday & today, to my chagrin. Tbh i was unhappy, coz when i've decided that someone is so unpleasant that i never wish to interact [even passively] with them again, i was shocked & unhappy that they still show in my network timeline, albeit collapsed with warning as you said. If i had my druthers, i'd never see any aspect of them again.

Question to any users who are also familiar with federating to servers.

Why don't Friendica Likes of posts federate across to Mastodon?

  • is there any known solution for this annoyance, or at least a workaround?
  • does the problem lie within Friendica, within Mastodon, or somewhere else?
  • doesn't this IMO sizable flaw rather mock the mantra that the Fediverse via facilitates widespread interoperability amongst myriad clients?

When i recently discovered that none of my Masto friends was seeing any of my Friendica Likes to their toots, i felt a bit devastated, not least coz it might have connotated rudeness on my part in their minds.

I'm then and now experiencing a strange behaviour in Friendica web (frio): Having a post with a longer thread below, I expand the thread and interact (like, reshare) with some messages in there. If I do that, more than just once a few moments after that interaction the display somehow seems to "scroll" or "jump" or reposition, not sure by which pattern, in some cases the comment I interacted with being scrolled to back or bottom, in some cases scrolling up or down the thread. Seems to happen on all browsers I tested so far, and somehow feels related to clicking, say, a "like" thumb and the background activity triggered by that being finished. Am I the only one to see that? Anyone else? This isn't really a big deal but a bit annoying as you again and again lose track of where you were.

msdropbear42,

@z428 It happens to me a lot, & tbh it's pretty exasperating. Because of it i frequently lose my reading place in my network timeline, & need to manually scroll up & down to "rediscover" where i was. This does not happen in my Masto* account.

I have a [non-technical, entirely guessed] hypothesis. I suspect that "interacting" with the subject post somehow "triggers" to then check for new items in the fediverse, to insert at the top of my timeline, which then abruptly displaces my "reading point" down by the number & size of new posts added.

  • If true, i would mention this; Mastodon allows users to avoid this unpleasant inconvenience, by an optional setting in Preferences. When enabled [which many Masto users do, afaik], new toots are prevented from automatically entering the top of the timeline & displacing it down, instead generating a small notification atop the timeline noting the availability of new content. Then, at a time chosen by the user, they can manually click that actionable notice, which loads the new content. I really wish we had this in Friendica!

Hasn't 's badly miscued here in this editorial?

smh.com.au/national/nsw/sydney…

The timing is awkward to say the least, given the murder victims' bodies atm remain unrecovered, the suspect afaik remains basically mum [keeping shtoom], & ofc the whole palaver of trial, evidence etc is still in the distant future.

Even so, don't we already know two important, & uncontested, bits of info here that make Shields' decision to wrap his editorial of longstanding police antipathy to peeps around this latest tragic unnecessary loss of innocent lives, unwise at the very least, if not exposing him to criticism of drawing too long a bow?

  • the suspect is gay, along with the victims.
  • the suspect was until only very recently in a direct partner relationship with one of the victims

As such, it just seems to me that Shields is entirely barking up the wrong tree here, by his blatant & repeated linking of this crime to the historical horrors of terrible cops' misbehaviour against queer peeps.

Am i too far out on a limb here to suggest that it is extraordinarily probable the suspect in THIS case murdered the victims expressly coz of my dot points, not coz "i'm a cop, cops kill gays, ergo i must kill this pair"?

IMO Bevan Shields has made multiple blunders since becoming editor, & here i feel he's made another.

@helpers One of the distinct disadvantages, afaict, with the web UI [ie, using a browser] compared to Mastodon, is the inability to see / access / use the Compose Post box unless one is scrolled to the top of the timeline. In Masto, with both its default & UI views, the Compose box is always visible, hence available, regardless of any other timeline status. Tbh i find this restriction really frustrating in F.

For various reasons in F i prefer the Vier UI display option over Frio, but afaict my objection pertains to both.

Is there possibly some option buried in Settings that i might have missed, which when enabled makes the Compose Post box available any time, eg, from a top bar link as a popup modal?

Is there some AddOn for this that Friendica server owners could install that remedies this problem?

In absence of anything better, my inefficient workaround is to open a second tab of my F account, in which i then access the box to compose & send my impromptu post, without disturbing my position in my scrolled timeline in the original tab [eg, first thing each morning i scroll down & review all new posts since yesterday, but often think of something i want to say or ask that's not tied to any individual post i might be contemporaneously reading atm, six hours down my timeline].

Really reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally wish i could find a way in my shiny new account/s to:

  1. Set all threads to be collapsed into the parent post by default, unless & until i click to expand.
  2. Hide ALL of EVERYONE's voluminous Reshares from my Network timeline. I simply don't wanna see them at all. I only wanna see (a) my followed , (b) my followed peeps' original posts [which, per above, if subsequently spawned a thread, is collapsed].

@luciedigitalni Noice! 🎉

There's so much about how the universe works that's utterly incomprehensible to me. Here's a recent one, for instance.

Last week i had someone come over to do some extensive tree trimming. He did it, pretty well afaict, & ofc it generated heaps of residue. He spent much time cutting up the smaller stuff & stuffing it into my council green wheelie bin, til it was as full as a goog. He kindly offered to wheel it down to the street kerb for me. I said ta, & he did; i accepted that i'd possibly have silent opprobrium from some neighbours at my bin being out there for the almost week it would need before its designated "bin day" arrived again.

The next morning, opening my blinds, i was gobsmacked to see the bin had been emptied. It was still several days from the "right" day.

I give all credit to environmentally-conscious space-aliens (oh, & ofc also to ). Nothing else is remotely plausible. 🤪

@helpers For the past few days i've puzzled over the fact that my browser ()) had stopped displaying for my account, despite me still having them enabled both in Floorp, & in . As Floorp had had an update several days ago, i began wondering if maybe the latest version might have broken its Notifications function. However today i eliminated that possibility by verifying that also my Vivaldi & browsers no longer give me my Friendica DN [&, like Floorp, they certainly used to]. So then i began wondering if maybe @alfred might have recently upgraded their server version of Friendica, & that said putative version was buggy. I decided it would be judicious to take a quick look at my Friendica account Settings, before posting a question about that.

Whoa! Well, i found the problem... but i do not understand how/why. Many months ago soon after creating this account, i had adjusted all my Settings to suit my preferences, & ofc one of those was to enable Desktop Notifications [otherwise, for months, i'd not have been receiving DN in all three browsers, til recently]. However, now, that setting had been lost, ie, it had reverted to default, ie, disabled.

Wtf? 😮

Now that i've re-enabled it, happily i'm once more getting my Friendica DNs. 🥳🎉

But... how on earth had that setting become disabled recently? 🤯 🤷‍♀️

Hello again @petrescatraian , a couple of weeks ago, in my other Friendica Instance, you kindly gave me this guidance for how to send toots from Friendica with a CW that would appear in Mastodon correctly with the collapsed/expandable spoiler [https://libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-1965-8f20-2eea-511780744984]:

Titled posts seem to be suffering from this behavior. This is the title that appears. You do not need to add a title to a post - it's optional. If you want to add an actual CW to a post in Friendica, just type at the beginning of each post that you want to add it (in the body of it, not in the title). Or you can click the eye icon, and it's added automatically. You can also do this with comments, like below:

I never had the chance before tonight to try your advice, but i now have [see attached picture]. The good news is that yes, thank you, in my Masto instance my test-toots now correctly appear with the CW spoiler, which works in the proper Masto style. The bad news is that back here in Friendica, something is wrong, because i cannot see any CW header text at all, only the body-text that should be hidden behind the spoiler. From the picture [in Edit mode, after i'd already Sent it & discovered the Masto-success but Friendica-failure] are you able possibly to discern what i might still be doing wrong please?

PS; in this current toot to you, i have deliberately NOT tried to use any CW.

Peter Dutton demands more detail on ‘People who earn less than $180k’

Opposition Leader and man of the people Peter Dutton has demanded the Labor government prove these so called ‘90% of Australians earning less than 180k’ actually exist.

“I’ve not been made aware of these people and no one I regularly speak to is on less than 180k,” he said from QANTAS chairman’s lounge, “these changes will hurt everyone I know. This is just another example of Labor breaking their promises to working class CEO’s, investment banker and mining executives who are feeling the pressure.”

“Especially Landlords, there’s a rental crisis going on and some of them might actually have to dip into their profits just to keep a roof over their tenants heads if they only get an extra $4.5k a year instead of $9K.”

“Australia, this is why you need the Liberal Party in charge. While Labor might backflip on drastically increasing wealth inequality in this country by giving the average Australian an extra grand in tax cuts at the cost of giving the rich an extra $4.5 grand after years of focus grouping, we promise to you all now that we will take that tax cut away and redistribute the money back into the pockets of millionaires in need to help fund their next yacht party.”

I saw Dune 2 yesterday, and it somehow, it felt like it was too long and too short.

I've read a lot of classic sci-fi, but I couldn't get through the Dune books, so I didn't really know the storyline going in, yet the second half of the movie felt like it was jumping all over the place without really taking the time to provide context or explore the consequences/meaning.

Yet I also couldn't wait for it to end. Not because it was bad, but just because 3 hours in a cinema is too long for my poor ADHD self, and the wriggles were kicking in big time.

If they'd have turned it in to two 2 hour movies instead of a single nearly 3 hour movie, I think I'd have had a much better time.

    msdropbear42,

@ada I read the series in my teens. I confess i found it a real slog; the rich dense lore was so overwhelming that i felt i was consistently wading thru literary molasses. I still have the same paperback set on my bookshelf now, but almost 50 years later, with fuzzy vision, shortened concentration span, & ever-declining cognition, the probability i'll re-read them now is zero. In the 80s, my 20s, a friend & i saw the original film. It was unambiguously one of the all-time worst films i've ever seen.

Hello. There is a certain "network weirdness" that irregularly afflicts my use of in my browser. Most of the time this misbehaviour does not occur, but each time it does arise, i can never identify its cause, nor even any consistent pattern of other symptoms that might lead to uncovering its root cause. I also don't know if there's some esoteric setting in my Friendica account's Settings doing this, that i might have overlooked.

See the pic for a quick simple visual display of the symptom.

Pls does anyone have any ideas my Friendica does this?

Pic shows my desktop for network activity, with random bouts of my full available download & upload capacity consumed by my Friendica browser tab. Pic shows some breaks wherein both UL & DL revert to their normal "background noise" levels, & these occurred when i reloaded the tab, &/or when i closed the browser. Note that "background noise" levels are the norm for this tab; the weird activity is a small minority of the overall browsing time measured over months & years, nevertheless this problem still arises far too often for my liking.
