@aeva I discovered the Orca lang the other day, and then was shown Orca Play to play with it in browser:

Opened the forever-closed-until-now world of music to me!

of the day:
Do you have a “grail” pen(s)? What first drew you to it? What is preventing you from getting it?

mvu,
@mvu@peoplemaking.games avatar

@penfount I'm more or less "done" buying new fountain pens for a while, but my grail was/is the striped Pilot Myu.

I spent a day in Tokyo last year (on a stopover) and scoured second hand pen stores but couldn't find one -- the process soured me quite a bit, as I'm used to fountain pens being a "nerd" hobby and not a "luxury" hobby. Several of the used pen stores in Japan really leaned into the luxury aspect, and the clerks eyed me [not very luxe looking] like I just walked into a Chanel wearing socks and sandals. Felt gross. I stopped my search for the grail pen since.

I did end up at Kakimori which I guess is kinda "medium end"? Much better vibes, bought some neat ballpoint pens.

#FPQuestion of the day:
Have you had any fountain pen disasters—like dropping a favorite pen, or a pen snapping in half? How did you feel and what did you do about it?
#FountainPens

mvu,
@mvu@peoplemaking.games avatar

@paradoxmo Could be! I've just taken it as an expensive lesson and try to keep my other pens in-use or cleaned out.
Contacting customer support sounds like more of a hassle than it's worth 😅

Pen still looks good as a non-functional chunk of brass.

mvu,
@mvu@peoplemaking.games avatar

@penfount I left my Ystudio pen sitting too long inked and the ink ate through the plastic seal and now the neck leaks right around the nib and it's unusable 😭

    @pikuma I don't know the details, but sounds like someone leaked course files.

    That's really rough, but I think ultimately inevitable as you grow your business and catalog. If something's worth buying, then it'll be worth stealing to someone.

    It happens to all levels of creators, from AAA games to onlyfans accounts. I think all you can do is re-interperet the scenario as a sign of success (albeit an annoying one). The people stealing your stuff wouldn't have paid for it anyways, but now they might talk about your courses to people who might (attempt at a positive spin).

    Anyways, your NES course has been on my wishlist for a while -- picking it up now. While there may be people willing to steal your content for whatever reasons, there's still lots of people who are more than willing to pay for your work. ♥️

    I got SO frustrated at one point at . There was a great panel about how we don't have control over the engines and tools we use. About how small, open source engines are the way to do that.

    They lamented the closure of walled gardens like Flash (I fear for Dreams in a hopefully far future), and how much culture is lost to the whims of the market.

    They mentioned the contradiction of user vs corporate interests. They mentioned open source as an example to follow.

    But when I asked...

    @kednar For anybody that reads this and wants an open source pico8, the tic80 is very very fun and open source (and supports extra langs!)

    I bet evaporating feels nice. You get to just be a soft fluffy cloud and float around for a little bit, or perhaps a nice fog that blankets the city. I'm a bag of flavored water why can't I do that

    Right, so I went on a pretty wild binge last year and now I have a moderate collection of super fancy . I figured I'd post some of my loadout for fellow stationary nerds.

    I bought this Kaweco Brass Sport from a small book shop while visiting the east coast. I really like the heft of this pen and how it warms up in your hand as you use it. It also doubles as an excellent fidget toy.

    I tried several nib sizes with it, but finally settled on a boring old F. The Kaweco steel nibs are fairly stiff, so you end up with a consistent line that's great for line art and sketches.

    I usually keep it inked with Platinum Carbon Black ink which is fairly water resistant. It comes in handy when I want to throw watercolors or ink washes over some linework~

    A closeup of the fountain pen, posted now, nib facing the camera. In the background and slightly out of focus there is a doodle. A couple other papers with ink on them are scattered about.

    Back in Japan for a day on my route home and I finally got a chance to head to Kingdom Note to buy and some of their cool animal themed Ink and... I donno.

    This was the store I was most excited for, and maybe I was building it up in my head too much, but I got the same weird haughty vibes as I get in an Hermes store. Like a "this person can't afford anything in here" vibe from the full-on-suit-and-tie clerk.

    They had a couple items I was interested in and I was planning on picking up some ink but I just kinda icked out of the store. I can support my local pen shops that make me happy and just buy whatever inks they've got.

    I got some neat ballpoint pens from the Kakimori store and some fun stuff from the Travellers notebook store, but my goal to get a special FP during my trip has been a flop.

    A question on here spurred me to publish an old standard-deck-of-cards game I wrote (based heavily on an existing game, credited in post) on my blog.

    It's a battling game where you have the noble cards duel it out (politically) by allying with supporters and keeping those alliances secret.

    It's really fun, but I honestly don't know if it's actually playable without a couple of visual aids, which I'll see about making and adding later.

    Anyways, give it a read / tweak / try if you're into this kinda thing. Feedback appreciated!

    Alright, after mucking about forever and writing some real gross code, I've got little cutscenes working in my

    Dialogue is such a core part of games for me, so even for a tiny platformer I wanted to implement this -- and how to implement cutscenes in games has eluded all my past endeavours, so I'm feeling pretty proud to get it working~

    That was the last technical hurdle; now I need to just crank out 20-30 rooms and I should have a game!

    A little low-fi pixel art game featuring a tiny caveman wall-jumping and avoiding spikes. 2 brief cutscenes interrupt the gameplay, mostly involving the caveman being curious about the nature of the tower he's in.

    I have come to request recommendations for and / modern ROMs!

    Anything that surprised or impressed you -- I've been really really impressed with the handful of things I've played recently, and want to get deeper into this retro nouveau style of gaming!

    • I know there's lots of retro-style indie games on PC etc, but I'm hungry for fantasy consoles and GB homebrew

    My own recommendations for stuff that was fun and / or surprised me:
    Gameboy:
    The Machine (Jeltron)
    Feed IT Souls (GrumpyFunction)
    My Friendly Little Island (PlayInstinct)
    He Fucked the Girl out of Me (Taylor McCue)

    PICO-8:
    The Shadow King / Cosmic Collapse / Hellgineers (Johan Peitz)
    Original Celeste (the obvious entrypoint)
    Beckon the Hellspawn (LokiStriker)

    good riddance to everybody who doesn't use zig because they want unused variables in their code.

    I hate reading your code, and I've constructed a life for myself where I don't have to anymore.

    every time you complain, I celebrate my life achievement.

    mvu,

    @andrewrk I'm gonna fill my Zig code with

    var g:i1 = 0;
    g = 0;

    And never use g again just to spite you.

    (JK I love Zig and have never unused a variable in my life)
