Bitcoin and their ilk really aren't my thing, but many talk about the need for a digital currency. But here's the thing - we already have one, don't we?
https://kevquirk.com/we-already-have-a-digital-currency

mykhaylo,
@mykhaylo@fosstodon.org avatar

@kev we don’t need a digital currency per se. We need a currency not issued by governments. It wasn’t always like this nor does it need to stay this way forever. Most of inflation comes from uncontrollable emissions of money by governments, and without getting rid of the government in this scheme it will never change. Read this book to understand why we actually need new forms of currency:

@kravietz daily bombings of Kharkiv clearly show they want to destroy the city and get the people to leave it. It’s heating infrastructure is completely destroyed so winter there will be unbearable. We can observe one of the largest city destructions ever. And it’s a beautiful city too.

Second photo shows one of the oldest concrete buildings in the world, built in 1920s.

If you cut through all the corporate BS, what is the real purpose of Threads on the Fediverse?

Whenever I hear an interview with Meta, they present their intention as “we are all about open source”. But realistically, we all know, they are all about capitalizing on human interaction. So what is the capitalization element in being here?

I get that they open Threads to more content, but as soon as they start poluting their own space with ads, have they not opened and exit door towards Mastodon?

So, today blocked all Ukrainian bots that were used to gather information about the movement of russian forces and also the sightings of drones. All of that because seemingly they breach the terms.

At the same time all the similar russian bots keep working as usual.

I'm afraid it's official — telegram is under . See the post where Durov announced this few days ago.

The world needs something as good as telegram, but independent, like mastodon.

mykhaylo, (edited )
@mykhaylo@fosstodon.org avatar

Unexpectedly, today Telegram unblocked officially Ukrainian bots. It might have been a result of pressure through diplomatic channels, but I’m glad they did.

Update: thinking about it a little more, it’s not that unexpected. This already happened when Durov wanted to ban Ukrainian news channels at the start of the war, but changed his mind from the public backlash.

Durov is a Kremlin asset for sure, but not 100% controllable.

You guys still didn’t get it. It’s not a choice between supporting or not supporting Ukraine.

It’s a choice between fighting Russia yourself or with money. And it’s not indefinite, if Ukraine loses you will have to fight.

Not because you want to. But because there’s only one kind of invitation you cannot say no to: “let’s go outside”.

France is smart: they are already discussing reinstating general military service. They are preparing. You should too. 1/2

Hezbollah is now launching it's second wave of missiles towards Israel tonight.

I will not be surprised if these waves are meant to exhaust the Israeli air defences before the really dangerous Iranian strike comes later tonight.

Iran has the 14th most powerful army in the world, and some sources compare their military strength to Australia.

mykhaylo, (edited )
@mykhaylo@fosstodon.org avatar

@randahl I wouldn’t trust these rankings since seeing what happened to the second army in the world.

The really important question is this: did indecisiveness of the US make Iran so bold? Letting them partner up with Russia does seem to be a screw up.

But there’s a silver lining. We could observe first-hand how Germany-Japan axis was formed during WW2.

Those who don’t know history are bound to repeat it. Those who know history are bound to watch helplessly as it happens.

"The private sector is where all the innovation happens", he posted using a protocol developed at CERN built on top of communications technology developed by ARPA, on a device powered by technology created for the US Air Force and NASA in the 1960s.

mykhaylo, (edited )
@mykhaylo@fosstodon.org avatar

@Tallish_Tom @jasongorman that question is too simple to describe my position. Purely factually if we can find at least one case of innovation outside of private sector — the point seems to be factually correct. Furthermore, there was innovation before the concept of private property was even discovered, innovation is inherent to humans no matter where and what they do. BUT the original statement was not factual, it had political implications to it. And I strongly disagree with these.

mykhaylo,
@mykhaylo@fosstodon.org avatar

@jasongorman that actually proves this point. You can easily compare Russia and US. They had roughly same military technologies developed at about the same time. In russia thats what they stayed — military. And in US private companies turned them into iphones and laptops. State funding seems to work for fundamental research but is totally unable to turn research into anything but bombs.

There’s a strong movement in support of in upcoming European Parliament vote. Interestingly, the support is coming from scientific and environmental experts, including some farmers:

Nearly three dozen Nobel laureates have joined more than 1,000 scientists in urging members of the European Parliament to embrace science-based gene editing technology. New Genomic Techniques, they write in a petition, “hold immense promise for sustainable agriculture, enhanced food security, and innovative medical solutions.”

Surprising? But if you start with the definition of “organic farming” as farming that attempts to minimize negative impact on environment, it makes perfect sense. Genetically organic plant varieties require less herbicides and pesticides and less land, which means they actually do support biodiversity more than traditionally cultivated varieties.

Memoirs of soldier who participated in war in 1979-1989 indicate not much has changed in Russian army culture since:

> In the village one of the sergeants remarked, without hiding his emotion, that 'the young women are good'. The sergeant's words set all the others on fire like a spark, and then he threw off his overcoat and moved on one of the women: — Row, lads! In front of the aksakals and the children, our internationalists had their way with the women. The rape went on for two hours. The children huddled in a corner, screaming and shrieking, trying to help their mothers somehow. The old men, trembling, prayed to their God for mercy and salvation. Then the sergeant commanded, "Fire!" - and was the first to shoot the woman he had just raped. Quickly they finished off all the others as well. Then they poured fuel from the tank of the infantry fighting vehicle, poured it all over the dead bodies, covered them with some clothes, rags and even the scanty wooden furniture and set them on fire. The flames flared up inside the adobe...".

The book documents plenty of cases of rape, indiscriminate killing of civilians, torture and targeted destruction of basic food sources such as orchards or food storages by Soviet army.

As the author of Russian "Be TV" channel notes, in November 1989 USSR enacted an amnesty for all war crimes committed by Soviet troops in course of its invasion in Afghanistan.
