Since the start of the war #Russia has been targeting #Ukraine culture especially fiercely - it has ruined dozens of museums, now it moved to targeting book warehouses and printing works. In today’s attack in #Kharkiv Russian rockets have killed 7 book warehouse workers (5 women and 2 men).

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

I got ahold of the Copilot+ software.

Recall uses a bunch of services themed CAP - Core AI Platform. Enabled by default.

It spits constant screenshots (the product brands then “snapshots”, but they’re hooked screenshots) into the current user’s AppData as part of image storage.

The NPU processes them and extracts text, into a database file.

The database is SQLite, and you can access it as the user including programmatically. It 100% does not need physical access and can be stolen.

If you cut through all the corporate BS, what is the real purpose of Threads on the Fediverse?

Whenever I hear an interview with Meta, they present their intention as “we are all about open source”. But realistically, we all know, they are all about capitalizing on human interaction. So what is the capitalization element in being here?

I get that they open Threads to more content, but as soon as they start poluting their own space with ads, have they not opened and exit door towards Mastodon?

So, #telegram today blocked all Ukrainian bots that were used to gather information about the movement of russian forces and also the sightings of drones. All of that because seemingly they breach the terms.

At the same time all the similar russian bots keep working as usual.

I'm afraid it's official — telegram is under #russia. See the post where Durov announced this few days ago.

The world needs something as good as telegram, but independent, like mastodon.

Unexpectedly, today Telegram unblocked officially Ukrainian bots. It might have been a result of pressure through diplomatic channels, but I’m glad they did.

Update: thinking about it a little more, it’s not that unexpected. This already happened when Durov wanted to ban Ukrainian news channels at the start of the war, but changed his mind from the public backlash.

Durov is a Kremlin asset for sure, but not 100% controllable.

If someone says, we have done enough for Ukraine, tell them this:

We are 789 days into this war, and the Kerch bridge is still standing, and letting Russia move military resources into occupied Crimea and beyond.

This is a strategic failure. Not on part of the Ukrainians, but on us for not providing the weapons needed.

The new aid package, which the US Senate will adopt today, is the first to mention ATACMS. Germany is still refusing to send Taurus missiles.

We are not doing enough at all.

Every day, the Russians bomb civilians in Ukraine. And every day the Ukrainians pull their hurt or even dead fellow citizens from the rubble.

And yet, Ukrainians prefer living that way instead of living under Russian rule.

That tells you everything about what Putin has to offer.

Ukraine will win this war, because it is clear, there is no alternative.

lin11c,
@lin11c@toad.social avatar

@randahl Russia is an evil sadistic country and Putin is a murderous monster. He will never stop and will move on to other Baltic nations, that is crystal clear. None of these nations want Russia's boot on their neck. It's nothing for the US to give Ukraine a small fraction of our weapons, many retired, but we have been infiltrated by Russia money because politicians are weak amoral scumbags. Ukrainians want to be in NATO and have their autonomy. We MUST assist them.

New vaccine strategy eliminates need for boosters:

"RNA-based vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus and can be used safely even by babies or the immunocompromised"

  • "one and done" approach
  • targets a part of the viral genome that is common to all strains of a virus
  • tested in mice

You guys still didn’t get it. It’s not a choice between supporting or not supporting Ukraine.

It’s a choice between fighting Russia yourself or with money. And it’s not indefinite, if Ukraine loses you will have to fight.

Not because you want to. But because there’s only one kind of invitation you cannot say no to: “let’s go outside”.

France is smart: they are already discussing reinstating general military service. They are preparing. You should too. 1/2

@mykhaylo Imagine Captain Pickard on Enterprise, they are under attack, Scotty shouting "Shields are at 50%!" and Pickard just responding "So what? It's just the shields, not the ship. No worry".

Ukraine is the shield for Europe and NATO. If Ukraine falls, russia will be at full swing, developed and tested new missiles, capturing all remaining Ukrainian resources. The next country after that could actually be done for in three days. We won't have two years to decide whether to send jets or not.

@mykhaylo The kids of military age in the Netherlands received a letter last week reminding them military service has not been abolished, but merely suspended, and that the security situation in the world means they could get called to serve at some point. No concrete plans yet though, but it's definitely a sign.

“Ukraine must win this fight.”

These were the words of the Prime Minister Mark Rutte of The Netherlands today, when he announced his country will increase the aid to Ukraine from EUR 2 billion to EUR 3 billion this year, and make another EUR 3 billion available next year.

The Netherlands is working closely with Denmark and the Czech Republic to provide more air defence as well.

Dankje to the awesome people of The Netherlands!

Hezbollah is now launching it's second wave of missiles towards Israel tonight.

I will not be surprised if these waves are meant to exhaust the Israeli air defences before the really dangerous Iranian strike comes later tonight.

Iran has the 14th most powerful army in the world, and some sources compare their military strength to Australia.

mykhaylo, (edited )
@mykhaylo@fosstodon.org avatar

@randahl I wouldn’t trust these rankings since seeing what happened to the second army in the world.

The really important question is this: did indecisiveness of the US make Iran so bold? Letting them partner up with Russia does seem to be a screw up.

But there’s a silver lining. We could observe first-hand how Germany-Japan axis was formed during WW2.

Those who don’t know history are bound to repeat it. Those who know history are bound to watch helplessly as it happens.
