Thursday, I updated my Mac to Sonoma 14.3.1. Tonight, I discovered my iTunes won't play any of my music except Bey's new album (purchased/downloaded Friday). In this moment, I'm actually ok with that. I'd still like to get to the bottom of what's going on, though.

How can Apple have a gazillion engineers & QA testers/evaporators, and still release buggy damn updates?!

Really inspiring interview I'm glad I watched tonight. Had no idea he got the idea for finger-tapping from watching Jimmy Page in a Zeppelin performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yb26D8bBZB8

My final act on a client engagement was accidentally deleting a recurring calendar event for everyone in the company, emailing them in the process, instead of quietly and professionally taking myself off of the meeting like I thought I was doing. I’ve literally never been more mortified. Peak social anxiety. In lieu of flowers please send embarrassing stories

ninavizz,
@ninavizz@mastodon.social avatar

@jbr UX FAIL!! Ugh, why I am so persnickety about words in UIs, and about user testing. You're a good one, and I'm sure everyone else just thought it was funny. At least, I hope so.

Emojis keep flying out from my head in video meetings on Teams with a current client of mine, and nobody can find the setting to turn that off—so now when I'm talking and emojis or effects start whizzing around, everyone else just mutes while doubling-over in laughter. As I facepalm in embarrassment.

The drag: starting the packing process, to get 90% of our stuff outta the house for le grande re-floor project.

The awesome: BEYONCÉ cowbabesauce blasting! Even my partner loves her new tunes, and he likes verrry little, lol.

ninavizz,
@ninavizz@mastodon.social avatar

@Voline Ba-dam-dam! How much we both wish we didn't have to do this, is a LOT. Our dumb homeowners insurance won't insure the house, if we don't replace the dang floor. It's mold free. It's just badly warped in a few places.

ninavizz,
@ninavizz@mastodon.social avatar

@Voline See my earlier reply to another person. Hot water pipe pinhole leak destroyed all the insulation in our crawl, 4 walls of sheetrock, the insulation in those walls, and the subfloor of our laundry room. They've already paid ~80k for the other stuff; but since there's now a record of why/how the visible hardwood inside is warped, it needs to get fixed. And you can't just "fix" a spot in a big hardwood floor. The whole dang thing needs replacing. Liability/legal crap.

"Kill Zones for civilians"

Straight from IDF. Where is the accountability. How many more innocent people must die?

"IDF says 9,000 terrorists have been killed since the Gaza war began. Defense officials & soldiers tell Haaretz these are often civilians whose only crime was to cross an invisible line drawn by IDF"
https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2024-03-31/ty-article-magazine/.premium/israel-created-kill-zones-in-gaza-anyone-who-crosses-into-them-is-shot/0000018e-946c-d4de-afee-f46da9ee0000

@ninavizz@mastodon.social avatar

@QasimRashid How in the everloving f**k could they have substantive enough data on 9,000 individuals to merit a death penalty w/o a trial?! That stands against everything the US Constitution purportedly does. We have zero business funding that murderous, colonist crap—unless we're still That Country.

I'd never before heard of something like this, and it sounds rather alarming. Conservative think-tanks using shareholder engagements to blackmail companies into abandoning charitable giving they object to.

Watching an episode of Welcome Back Kotter, where Horseshack joins the Hare Krishnas. My brother did the same, when he was also a teenager—and now I can't wait to send this to him. He's still in the Krishna community; just far more comfortable with himself & his faith, than the awkward teenager I remember who (from the outside) did a lifestyle-360 almost overnight.

This chatbot could also be used for digital privacy and security advice.

Reading "Scaling People" by Claire Hughes Johnson, and finding it to be a magnificent read; possibly one of the only books on leadership/management that really centers human needs. It's also one of the most beautifully designed books I've encountered in ages. Stripe Press prioritizing beautiful reader experiences via print design, FTW!!

one of the great things about having adhd is that when motivation and focus align, your brain runs like a Ferrari on a track

but when they don’t align, your brain is still that same Ferrari, only you’re now driving over cobbles and mud with a blown valve gasket

everybody thinks they want an expensive, tempermental, gratuitously overtuned hand-built speed machine, until they have to live with one as a daily driver that sees a track maybe a few days per year

@halfbloodprice @marasawr As a former roadracer living with ADHD, who took-up racing as a coping mechanism to keep my career from driving me crazy: I feel so very seen by this. A powder-pink, bling-covered Ferarri. On a Wintertime, tree-debris strewn, unpaved mountain road. ITME!!

Such a great damn story. Humans need more good stories. I don't miss the 52¢ cups of coffee I used to sling in high school, but I get the same Rosebud moments from cigarette smoke. :)

"The man who wrote the inspiring call for democracy and liberty in the American declaration of independence was at the same time one of the largest slave-owners in the country.

Despite emancipation and the civil rights movement, racial segregation still lies at the centre of American politics - especially in California. Behind the rhetoric of individual freedom lies the master's fear of the rebellious slave."

I really dislike the title of this superb critique of unexamined implications of the Ten Principles Of Burning Man

https://medium.com/@doublespeak/burning-man-was-never-radical-b3a3b999246d

ninavizz,
@ninavizz@mastodon.social avatar

@Miniver The author never partook in the art/creative community that informed those Ten Principles, is the thing. Among a small community built atop a core of WEIRD, all that crap works/worked great—without seeding neolib hyper-individualistic abdication of collective responsibility. Yet with the normies in Tech, it only became a reinforcement of Capitalistic values. Which he does brilliantly outline.

ninavizz,

@Miniver OHHHSOOOGOOOD!! I love that article so much. Having been a part of 1990s WiReD, it hits SO many nails on the head. Especially is point around "Jeffersonian Democracy," and "Doh, the guy was also one of the biggest slave owners in history!"

ninavizz,
@ninavizz@mastodon.social avatar

@gretared 4 years ago they didn't have "digital services." My little, temporary team was it. They still don't do digital services, but rather have the stakeholders we worked with, doing their best. Newsom signed something to force them to digitize, which I think they did by just adopting the MyDMV app.

@gretared The State of California also just really, really loves its treeware. I think most governments do. Germany is the worst, according to friends who live there, haha.
