one of the great things about having adhd is that when motivation and focus align, your brain runs like a Ferrari on a track

but when they don’t align, your brain is still that same Ferrari, only you’re now driving over cobbles and mud with a blown valve gasket

everybody thinks they want an expensive, tempermental, gratuitously overtuned hand-built speed machine, until they have to live with one as a daily driver that sees a track maybe a few days per year

I think the “Steve Jobs” movie’s orchestral score (by Daniel Pemberton) is one of the best to play while writing. Tron Legacy is another winner. Any other nominees?

marasawr,

@kevinrothrock Any of the Reznor-Ross scores, or Ólafur Arnalds (most recently scored an Apple TV+ series called Surface)

Also Weltschmerz (2015) by Charlotte de Witte; not a score, but there’s something about that mid-2010s Belgian techno that perfectly balances energy and focus

for folks born after 1990 wondering if we knew our response to 9/11 was (first) cosmically unhinged and (then also) hysterically criminal, yup!

felt like madness in the moment and only looks worse in retrospect as time goes on – I don’t think I’ll ever be able to separate grief for the people we lost today from the shame of what came after

The feminine urge to buy a black utility jumpsuit just like your other two black utility jumpsuits, but slightly different.

marasawr,

@evacide I have multiples of the same black dirt pyjamas and not a shred of regret

MTV and VH1 should be the only television channels allowed inside any gym

maybe Discovery+, but Shark Week content only

Zoomers & boomers: «IDGAF. It doesn’t affect me; everyone already has all my data—»

Me: No. No, they do not.

You generate data every time you touch that service, visit that site, patronise that business. Your data isn’t just your PII, and it isn’t finite. You are a living, breathing fountain of data that can be and is used in ways that harm the vulnerable and marginalised, even if it’s never used to harm you

It’s not zero-sum. Limiting use & reducing dependence still counts as
a good

Like much of modern linguistic theory, LLMs / GPTs were built on only an unrepresentative handful of the world’s languages

Unlike modern linguists, LLM / GPT shills don’t seem to view this as a problem

«I’ve been doing this for over 40 years, and our models of temperature increases have been pretty darn good. But the impacts are more severe, frequent and intense than I expected. Things are happening, in terms of impact, much more rapidly than I expected.»¹

Looking back at projected impacts from when I was in my teens/early 20s, some of the weather events we’ve seen this year weren’t considered super likely before the last quarter of the century

marasawr,

Again, when I was in my teens impacts like these were framed as low likelihood within my lifetime. 20 yrs later they’re already happening ²

Thoughts on the new logo our in house designer who just learned figma made?

marasawr,

@dansup what I like about the current logo is the inverted/subversive HT to insta’s colour gradient

new logo loses that dialogue and looks like it’s chasing X / Threads (even if that’s not the intent)

monochrome logo could be dope with a gradient + light leak, lens flare, grain… something to anchor it in photography

of all the shit my parents ever told me the fact that I wasn’t planned (and my younger brother was) is the one I really could have done without

like I’ve gained nothing from that except a lifetime of feeling like a mistake at every family gathering

idk, maybe balance your need to speak radical truths in a given moment against possibly traumatising your child(ren) forever

barista at my new/post-move local coffee shop was super annoyed I keep switching latte flavours and asked what the pattern is

I told him I get rose lattes on days I need to be spiky, lavender on days I can chill a bit

now all the baristas have started greeting me with «we spiky or chill?» and the other regulars are so dang confused I perish every time ☕️

Threads feed is exactly what you’d expect from the ppl who brought you Facebook. A bunch of lame-ass posts from celebrities & brands you don’t even follow. Even worse than Twitter’s ads. A pretty UI though.
