Discussing the threat posed by Meta ‌/‌ joining the with some tech enthusiasts feels more and more like debating with a denier.

«Look at all the data indicating that this will be a disaster. It has even happened twice already!»

Responses: «It won't happen this time» «It won't be that bad» «It's actually good if that happens» and «we can't do anything about it anyway»

This is a preemptive call to #Fediblock Meta's #P92‌/‌#Barcelona instance, for three reasons at least:

  1. it'll be huge and extremely poorly moderated;
  2. it will be a #privacy nightmare, allowing Meta to extensively profile #Fediverse users with greater ease;
  3. it will be used to #EEE the Fediverse in the same way their “support” for #RSS and #XMPP was used to wipe them out from the general consciousness with a rug-pull (my full thoughts on this: http://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/credible-threat-1/ )

OK maybe I can try this in English too. I'm looking for a or short that was published in the or earlier and was a graphical representation of the well know “boyfriend's death” story (Sheriff finds the girl variant)
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/the-boyfriends-death/
It was published on an Italian comics magazine in the 70s or 80s, but I'm sure it was American. I can't find the issue anymore. Anybody knows it? Boosts welcome for reach.

So let me see if I get it right: people use the lack of QTs as an excuse to not come to , but stick with despite it lacking support for GIFs, videos, DMs, polls, and basic filtering capabilities?

I have an problem that I would like to solve: two laptops that refuse to boot. One lights up for a couple of seconds, before shutting down again. The other seems completely dead, even after replacing the battery. The laptops are otherwise in decent conditions and I would like to revitalize them for my kids as they come of age.

Does have recommendations on the best course of action in this case?

The way “massages” images, often lowering quality while increasing storage size is one of the most flabbergasting misfeatures of this platform.

There's an open issue about this, but the title doesn't really make it justice:
https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/20255

This particular issue doesn't affect end-users only, but has a catastrophic impact on the servers, both in terms of storage and bandwidth requirements.

Look, it's not that I don't get the enthusiasm about ‌/‌ —that's not the reason why I warn against federating with it <https://sociale.network/@oblomov/110397020867065165>. I do get it. There is something elating, validating, empowering even, when some{one,thing} Big & Famous (seems to) adopts “underdog” tech. I know because I've been there, both as a user and as a developer. But because of that, and for having been burned already not once, not twice, but three times at least, I know what to look out for.

Remember: if you boosted something in the far past and you see it making the rounds again and you think it's still worth seeing, you can unboost and reboost it to share it with your followers again. You may have new ones that are interested in it, or old ones that missed it the first time.

I have this strong feeling that the things discussed with Meta under the include:

  • strategies to defederation as ineffective to protect user

  • strategies to spin defederation as being “damaging” to the Fediverse and driving developers away

  • pushing the “wait and see” position as “sensible” (in face of all evidence w/ Meta's track record) against the “radical” preemptive defederation

  • opportunities for non-blocking admins

Once again concerning the Facebook/Meta takeover of the Fediverse, allow me to remind you of the cultural cycle of cool, from geeks and nerds to sociopaths, as brilliantly summarized by David Chapman in his essay on “Geeks, MOPs, and sociopaths in subculture evolution”
https://meaningness.com/geeks-mops-sociopaths
This is highly recommended reading, and in case you're missing the parallel, the Fediverse is currently in its MOPs phase, driven by the influx of uncaring Twitter refugees.

This / bridge <https://tacobelllabs.net/@nkizz/110340426573847934> by @nkizz is just brilliant, but you know what would absolutely ROCK? A server that had native support for .
While we're on the topic, I wonder if anybody has thought about building a client with an UX inspired by Usenet newsreaders (personally, MicroPlanet Gravity was one of the few things I missed from Windows when I switched to Linux, would love to see something like that for Mastodon.)
