@oh8hub@mastodon.radio

On nights I'm a hacker and licensed #HamRadio op since 1999. Currently learning about #HF and #digimode (#ft8, #js8call, #vara). I try to do #pota and #wwff activations whenever possible.

On days I'm co-founder and R&D lead (#rustlang) on cybersecurity startup.

Do I need a floating Tardis? No! Did I buy it at a garage sale? Yes! (They wanted to give it to me, but I insisted on paying $1).

@ai6yr Can we get a photo from inside?

@_L1vY_ @cookiesinheaven @ai6yr Wouldn't it be better to insulate the houses to keep the hot outside and cold inside? Like cooler boxes.

I can keep my Finnish house warm on -30°C and cool on +30°C with minimum energy consumption.

I found an old QSL card for sale in Finland. It's QSO between F8JA and OH5NQ. The date in card is 1930-10-09. So soon 100 year old.

Anyone in France know if this station still exists?

Please boost for reach. Can we find anyone related to F8JA callsign?

oh8hub,
@oh8hub@mastodon.radio avatar

@holgerschurig The call sign might belong to a radio club or it's been moving from family member to another.

It's a small change, but asking around was so small effort that I think it was worth a shot :)

Merry Christmas! (Yes, the family got me a new toy...)

oh8hub,
@oh8hub@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr @donkeyherder Try measure from outside in. On the coldest days. You'll get the best contrast that way. Outside of house should be consistently cool and those hot leaks glow really visible.

@sciencewrighter@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Seriously, I believe that I will make magnetic signs for the sides and rear of my SUV for my next bird count. "I AM COUNTING WILD BIRDS." People react suspiciously to people that stop in front of their home and stare at their yards thru binoculars. Always get at least one person who comes up to ask what I'm doing (which is fine, I'm happy to share my eco-messages). They say, "Just trying to keep out the riff-raff."

oh8hub,
@oh8hub@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr @sciencewrighter With that costume it is even more suspicious to explain to be doing bird counting.

oh8hub,
@oh8hub@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr @sciencewrighter Hard hat is really important because those bird droppings might cause serious head injury.

ai6yr, to WX

From Jeff Berardelli: "Global heat Sept-Oct-Nov was off the charts. Beyond anomalies, this is another way to judge how warm the period was, using the deviation from normal (in this case compared to mid 1900s). The tropics - specifically the tropical Atlantic - really stick out at 6 sigma+." #wx #climate #heatwave

@ai6yr Something strange going on in parts of Sweden and Finland. It's been cold in here.

@ai6yr It amazes me how everyone keeps talking about making transportation more difficult, but nobody seems to mention about insulating our houses and other buildings.

What is the point of heating or cooling poorly insulated buildings? It is huge waste of energy.

@hb9hox @Ea5iyl I'm advocate of open source also. But it is not simple. If you do it for your freetime then the burden of maintenance is a real chore. And you still need to have your day job. Alternative is to sell your product and work it full time to pay the bills.

Innovation (closed source or not) is the key. Moving forward is key. Competition is good. If someone steps up with FOSS competitor for VARA: Good! But if not then we continue using VARA because it gets the job done.

oh8hub,

@Ea5iyl @clacke @hb9hox VARA HF accomplishes a successful digital two way communication between two amateur radio stations.

I can send Winlink email from my portable station in Oulu to a station in Oslo using just 10W of power. That's 1000km QSO.

The speed is adjust automatically to conditions. With good propagation I can see nice transfer speeds, but with bad propagation or interference it still can function, but with lower speeds.

I've not yet found another tool with similar performance.

oh8hub,
@oh8hub@mastodon.radio avatar

@Ea5iyl @clacke @hb9hox I'd love to see volunteers taking the challenge and start implementing open source version or competing alternative to VARA.

But while we're waiting, I'm happy to see the project continuously evolving and being used in real world.

We are not entitled to push down a project if at the same time we do not ourselves step up and provide alternative. There's too much hate and negativity in the world already.

Nobody is forced to use it. And many users area happy with it.

ai6yr, to hamradio

Hmm, if you're a amateur on mastodon.social, be aware that mastodon.radio has that instance limited (which means if you reply to a post from mastodon.radio, no one sees it. unless they follow you).

oh8hub,
@oh8hub@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr Maybe @M0YNG could consider removing the limit for mastodon.social? It might have been put up because of spam issues, but maybe it is no longer an issue?
