Every time I get reminded of the time some boomer named Marty Fouts took it upon himself to defend capitalism, in reply to my post about how I enjoy arguing with capitalism defenders, then claimed he wasn't defending capitalism, then flounced and blocked me because he couldn't defend capitalism, I giggle.

Generally, the FediForum organizers and most enthusiastic participants are pro-Meta so they won't be inclined to promote FediPact (or for that matter, the concerns of marginalized communities). But now is a good time for all of us to kick up dust again. We're still here and we're not changing our minds about Meta!

Um, I'd love an explanation. Anyone know what exactly this early-20th-century postcard of New Brunswick was trying to communicate?

Nothing but a wild guess here, but I was compelled to mull over the puzzle. Perhaps the donkey had a more pervasive popular association as "beast of burden" in this historical period, and this postcard was for farmers to communicate, "the locusts have increased my labor"

I was just looking at the tag to see if there's any design/development collectives, doing important work in an ethically aligned direction.

It's something I've wanted to be a part of for a while. My work is 100% remote/distributed already and I strongly believe that I have the experience to make me valuable. If I had the confidence to do so, I would build my own collective.

I have reached out to some organisations, but that's basically as far as I've got.

The entire issue of fedi groups is very up in the air right now. Supposedly Mastodon is incorporating group functionality in some way; and there are new services under development, like Bonfire, which is particularly oriented towards them. IOW there's a good chance of better ideas on groups emerging soon

I have been so since posting about my experiences on . It brought up a lot of I thought I had dealt with. On top of that I discovered one of our clergy left our church, without telling us, to join one run by a known and drug addict. I thought they had morals but I guess not. As I work to build a church with morals, ethics and standards, it seems less and less people want that. Why have I wasted 25 years of my life trying?

so i have a poop story that nobody on any platform appreciated. the fact that i wasn’t killed by the Stasi is a story i’d thought would be passed to my grandchildren but they won’t understand its importance as the history of this period isn’t even taught in US schools. so my πŸ’© story is rendered pointless cuz most users weren’t even born when this occurred.

    myπŸ’©story:

β€˜76 w/usa passport was driving from Polish border to East Berlin via special transit hwy. i had terrible diarrhea w/i sight of Wall guard towers so πŸ’© in middle hwy illuminated by turrets. permission to enter the β€œtransit highway” from E. Berlin to Poland during Soviet occupation required replacement of car licenses with fluorescent ones, siphoning/adding gas (lest you want a snoop around thru dense forests), no shoulder & no exits. THE END

Right now Loops has a single feed in chronological order, it's not the ideal algorithm but will work for now.

When testing on my friends, they mentioned this, they are used to an algo that is tailored to them and their behaviors (durationViewed, hasLiked, hasShared, hasOpenedCommentDrawer, hasCommented, hasFollowed)

This is the most complicated aspect of Loops, no it isn't the AR filters or Camera, it's the algo and feed.

Now the key question is: feed algorithm.

    Feedback + Boosts appreciated

    @dansup
Suggestion to frame the chronological timeline differently - it is, in fact, the fediverse's killer app. It's the reason most people land here, to escape the inscrutable manipulation of the capitalist services. You can't go anywhere else for a feed which is entirely of your own choosing, presented in an obvious and comprehensible way. Embrace the chronological feed

Can't stop thinking about a project I've had on the backburner for a while: "Socialism in One City? Municipal Socialism in Burlington and Ithaca," on the rebirth of municipal socialist politics in the 1980s-1990s. Much to learn, both positive and negative, from the history.

In Burlington, of course, you have Mayor Bernie Sanders in the 1980s. The story focuses on the tension between grassroots democratic forces (including Bookchin & the Greens) vs the official socialists in office, with the battle around setting the terms of socialist democracy.

In Ithaca, you have the lesser known example of DSA member and red diaper baby Benjamin Nichols, who built a broad progressive coalition thru which he won 3 mayoral terms in the 1990s. He took on Cornell & transformed municipal politics, but ended up alienating his coalition.

I think we desperately need to recover and learn from these kinds of histories of municipal radicalism, and compare them to contemporary projects like Cooperation Jackson and municipal DSA electoralism.

I am convinced, following Murray Bookchin, that the city (especially the small, livable city that enables face-to-face human community) is the setting for radical democratic politics. Reclaiming the city is the basis for a truly democratic and eco-socialist society.

The first week of August 2020 my daughter suggested I join TikTok. Her thought was that there were people in the community quarantining with family who mistreated them and they needed a place to vent and be themselves. I thought it was a great idea so I opened an account. 1/6
