I just heard some asininity from someone who should have known better. A friend of mine, an editor not long out of some of D.C.'s biggest and most prestigious political-news outlets, claimed that Fulton County DA Fani Willis had disgraced herself and disqualified her office and that it was a huge story.

Never mind that we had two days' worth of fact-finding and came nowhere near any such conclusion. 1/

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

Sure, what she did was very dumb and looks bad, but based on what we saw Thursday and today, she never lied to the court and never benefited financially from the arrangement, which are the grounds on which she could have been disqualified.

And a huge story? No, goddammit, there is NO moral equivalence, and the fact that so many national reporters seem to think that there is just shows that most of them are morally stillborn.2/

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

A HUGE story is treason. A huge story is inciting sedition/seditious conspiracy. A huge story is installing a Supreme Court that overturns a 50-year-old right and ignores the plain meaning of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. A huge story is illegally withholding aid from another country unless it helps out with political dirty tricks. 3/

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

A huge story is mid-9-digits fraud. A huge story is being adjudicated a rapist. A huge story is daily violations of the emoluments clause FOR FOUR YEARS. A huge story is Project 2025. A huge story is national vote suppression. A huge story is running the three branches of government like a GOT-damb crime family. 4/

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

Doing all those things at once is a REALLY huge story. Next to that, whom Fani Willis once slept with barely rates a bulleted brief deep inside the B section. She shouldn't have done it, but for the love of all that is holy, can we please have even a modicum of perspective here? The only thing riding on it is the survival of democracy. 5/fin

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

@colorfiend He was working for her. Absent things like lying to the court about it or her financially benefiting from the arrangement, there's nothing illegal or professionally unethical about it that I know of (IANAL), but in general it's not a good idea to sleep with someone who works for you, for a lot of reasons.

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat Sorry, but we are not just talking about two consenting adults, and this is not just a case of panty-sniffing. Criminal cases are frequently won or lost in the media, and this criminal case is against the most formidable defendant in U.S. history. Willis and Wade would have been wiser to avoid tainting the jury pool until after the trial. Also, it is just a good rule of thumb not to sleep with people who work for you.

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat Defendants didn't accuse Willis of sleeping with Wade. They accused her of 1) lying to the court about it and 2) possibly having benefited financially from the relationship, either of which would be legal grounds for the judge to remove Willis's office from the case. @colorfiend

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat Not as much as it used to be. The movement has had some beneficial effect in that regard. @colorfiend

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

@Stinson_108 That may or may not be true. Keep in mind that the defendants are desperate to get Willis's office yeeted off the case because any replacement prosecutor likely would be chosen by Republicans and would make the charges go away. @thepoliticalcat

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

@Stinson_108 IANAL, but I don't think defendants met their burden of proof (the standard is "more likely than not," not "beyond a reasonable doubt") that Willis did anything disqualifying. McAfee's a Republican, but so far he has been calling a good game, so I honestly have no idea what he's going to do. I do know what he SHOULD do. @thepoliticalcat

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

@Stinson_108 I saw some of it, yes. I think part of that was the simple ineptitude of the defendants' attorneys, but part of it was that he was realizing that their allegations had zero evidence behind them. @thepoliticalcat

How do you feel about physical touch? I mean this is the broad sense, not necessarily in a sexual way, but you can answer however you wish.

Personally, I enjoy it a lot, and find it comforting, but only from really specific people. If strangers or people I don't know well want to hug me, it's okay, but I won't seek it out. I think handshakes are weird. Hey, you want to hold hands with a stranger for a short amount of time for some reason?

panamared27401,
@panamared27401@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr I like to give and receive physical touch from friends and family to whom I am close. For strangers I'm meeting, I prefer handshakes, even though the practice originated as a medieval way of showing that one was unarmed.

Snipers shoot at every moving object around Nasser Hospital, killing medical staff, evacuees, and those trying to get to the hospital for treatment. These people have been killed at the gate of the hospital and even inside the complex.
About 300 medical staff in the hospital are overwhelmed and exhausted. There are also 450 patients and wounded people inside. 10,000 evacuees – who cannot leave since the Israeli ground invasion started – are sheltering inside the facility.
