oooh, yay, for another two weeks, I still get to be in the up to 40 age category...

Kier Starmer - who has suspended party members merely for liking Green Party tweets - is saying his Labour Party should be less tribal...

Kier Starmer who has overseen a purge of anyone even vaguely left wing from the party...

Starmer, who is still keeping Diane Abbott suspended?

Less tribal?

hmmm... can I get away with calling my boss' boss (SLT member) an "eldritch horror" on the work slack?

Doing the mandatory all-staff every two years training and...

This is not a Podcast... This is a short audio clip developed for the training. Do you even know what a Podcast is?!?

Surprise surprise, all 3 Labour candidates win in my ward... The Lib Dem is not even at half way, Tories below him all on a whopping 20.88% turnout...

Overall, only one Tory (running as "Local Conservatives"?) on the council, 3 Independents, 12 Lib Dems and 42 Labour

Still waiting on PCC results...

penwing,
@penwing@wandering.shop avatar

Labour have taken Cheshire PCC away from the Tories... Well... YMMV...

penwing,
@penwing@wandering.shop avatar

@steely_glint well, Warrington was full council election too... Dunno about the rest of Cheshire...

penwing,

@steely_glint although I'm not entirely sure I know what they do or why we need to commission crime in the first place...

It is really quite pathetic that both our main parties have so little vision, so little ambition, that they can only view working 'til we drop (dead, preferably) as a valid societal model & every "solution" they see is around preparing young people for this ("more resilient") or browbeating ill and disabled people until they have a damascene revelation about their difficulties and give up on sorting out their health or trying to have any quality of life

Where's my sci-fi future of leisure?

penwing,
@penwing@wandering.shop avatar

The Tories meanwhile are conflating stress and depression and in-work and out-of-work support as they see fit to sow confusion and try to push ridiculously offensive ideas around cutting support.

Stress is short-term problem for which a period away from work can help (even if work itself is not the straw that breaks the camel's back). You should get SSP (and Contractual Sick Pay?) to help with this.

Depression is a long term problem for which you can learn to deal with and may get PIP for

If you've not bought an extremely pretty book/set of books from Folio Society before you should know -

  1. They are beautiful
  2. They are packaged really well
  3. They are beautiful (I know I already said that, but it's worth repeating)

It's not just the illustrations, it's the whole package - the typesetting, the font choices, the feel...

Maybe I'll do an unboxing video when it arrives (hopefully tomorrow)

P.S. They are beautiful

P.P.S. they are also priced accordingly...

penwing,
@penwing@wandering.shop avatar

Yay! confirmation of delivery today which doesn't clash with anything I have planned...

/me wonders how they can do an unboxing video...

penwing,
@penwing@wandering.shop avatar

I'm in the 1-hour window the delivery folk have given...

penwing,
@penwing@wandering.shop avatar

It has arrived, with about seven minutes to spare!

Now, how to document this..?

penwing,
@penwing@wandering.shop avatar

Well, we start with the box itself... Lots of little bookish delivery quotes and nods printed all over...

Apparently it is (only?!?) two years since Heartstopper appeared on our screens...

A distant "boyfriend", an uncaring teacher and a rugby player...

I can get a couple of episodes in before Chucky and Fallout...

The most unrealistic part of this - me as a nerdy teen in rugby with someone I had a crush on would be "you what? You want me to put my arms around you and cuddle on the floor? Nuh huh... Not happening"

On days like this you realise how little slack there is in the UK train system. A track inspection overrunning early this morning means cascaded delays to trains in the afternoon because the staff are now in the wrong places (our train currently has no driver, sadly I don't think they'll let me have a go).

Looks like the Cass Report (into trans youth healthcare in the UK) has been leaked and from initial commentary it's bad ("50+ scientific reports but we've thrown out all but one, chosen by our conversion therapy fan" type bad)...

Looks like it's in competition with Sewell's report into racism in the UK for ludicrousness but without anyone on our side in the media to point that out and the additional immense damage this will do to young people

The Guardian: Keir Starmer faces discontent as Labour MPs reject union jack election flyers

Members say flag may alienate ethnic minority voters as some associate it with far right

(Starmer really IS an idiot if he didn't see this coming. The union flag is a nationalist symbol: the National Front stole it in the 1970s.)

@cstross some of us have been saying this for quite some time - patriotism as wrapping yourself in a symbol which has been appropriated by the NF and BNP is not patriotism... I don't feel safe around it as a queer person who grew up through the BNP rise

(Edit to add: this shouldn't be read as an aggressive "where ya been, Johnny come lately" by the way)

picked up the Warrington Sci-Fi Book group book for Tuesday's discussion... I am not a fan of Christopher Priest and Adam Robert's introduction in this edition of Inverted World manages to put me off more... (I have usually liked Roberts' work)

I feel like I should like this concept though so open mind penwing, open mind
