A colleague (in marketing) has just used “make [my department] great again” on the work slack… it’s reasonable for me to say “errr…” about it, right?

I just counted up and in my week off I have read ten books... OK, one was a novella, 4 were volumes of Heartstopper (a comic), but still, that's pretty good I think 8-)

And there's half a day left to try and get another in the bag...

Guess I need to look into a new instance too if mine is going to “wait and see” on Meta (Facebook). I’d rather “wait and see” from behind a safety net than by being in the middle of it…

I left Facebook for a reason. For multiple reasons.

Been missing the old days of cybre.space and it’s quirkiness too, so, any suggestions? Any invitations?

Surprisingly struggling with the sci-fi bookclub book this month. I know it is funny, but I seem to have had a sense of humour bypass. I keep putting it down and finding other things to do, like visit steamships or putting the rubbish out.

@steely_glint I only just remembered it was third-tuesday weekend and I need to (re-)read the book... at least I have the week off 8-)

It's the Worcester Christmas Party (a family gathering not taking place in Worcester or at Christmas... and "party" may be a little bit misleading too to be honest) this weekend - involves BBQ, camping and... Yellow warning for thunderstorms...

(Which with the otherwise glorious forecast makes packing a pain)

@pwaring it’s that you end up with tent, carrimat, sleeping bag, camp chair (I’m forty I can’t sit on the floor) and these are all quite bulky… then clothes and BBQ bits… can’t not take at least a book and battery charger and drinks…

I can't remember who it was here that I saw posting a recommendation for Space Opera by @catvalente but whoever you were, thank you so much.

I bought it pretty much on a whim based on that post and it's terrific. It's kind of as if Douglas Adams was still around and was writing about an intergalactic version of Eurovision.

Perfect fodder for a Sunday afternoon lazing in the garden - especially as one of my neighbours seems to have decided to soundtrack themselves doing the same by playing George Michael's entire musical output.

May Monday morning never arrive!

@losttourist it is a wonderful book 8-) absolutely got the Douglas Adams spirit running through it…

Searching for an unrelated problem this morning and came across a question where someone asked how to insert a VARCHAR value (a non-numeric string, not something like '6') into an INT column.

WHY?!

When did factories become megafactories?

And then when did megafactories become gigafactories?

penwing,
@penwing@wandering.shop avatar

@losttourist when they got to be around 1000 times bigger?

penwing,
@penwing@wandering.shop avatar

@losttourist I guess there could be a 1000 times more productive which may not translate into a physical size increase... After all a gigahertz chip was not 1000 times bigger than a megahertz chip... well... possibly with cooling... 8-)

but if thy're not using a 1,000 times increase in something they should be made to retake maths/physics/computing or some relevant subject...

    @losttourist ahhh fun... I think my grub stuff is in a slightly non-standard location or the Gentoo installation and upgrade instructions don't quite work together or something... I learned this the hard way and know to do other things now...

    Organisers of the Republic Demo seem to have been arrested as they were unloading placards.

    This is an extremely bad look which I have no doubt will be largely ignored…

    Oh wait, there’s an article on Sky News website - https://news.sky.com/story/kings-coronation-anti-monarchy-group-leader-among-activists-arrested-on-way-to-protest-site-12874307

    It is hard to express just how angry this makes me (Twitter link as he’s not on Mastodon) - Met Police arrested a team of “Night Angels” (who work on night time safety) at 2am this morning because they had rape alarms. Rape alarms they give out to those who may need them…

    While wearing high-vis tabards with the Met Police logos on…

    Held for 14hours. Many of those hours in handcuffs.

    Obviously, its illegal to wish to depose the monarchy in the UK and this is right and good. As a migrant, I swore an oath to the institution and I sleep better at night knowing that there are people inherently better than me in this country. But if I wanted to take pictures of a pro-equality, prodemocratic protest, just to glimpse what sort of perverse reprobates think all humans have inherent equal value, is there a specific place and time these wild radicals might be gathering or where they might be around 2pm as this entire event is on shabbos, which is right and good in a theocratic monarchy with a state religion. This is truly the best of all possible worlds.

    Unrelatedlu, it might be good to have some discourse about how our wise and good ruling government defines "safety" in the Online Safety Bill and what that might mean for scrappy little social media servers. Wikipedia has said they would basically have to disallow Britons doing edits.

    penwing,
    @penwing@wandering.shop avatar

    @celesteh you absolutely should stay away from the sort of thing described at https://www.republic.org.uk/coronation_protest

    I'm glad you are seeking out this important knowledge so you can stay appropriately clear and safe...

    [ordered some, will order more, want to always have the next book ready - thanks!]

    Help.

    I need books to read to my daughter (9).

    She suggests Famous Five but I would like something with a bit more modern "mindset" than the girls always helping in the kitchen and the boys in the barn.

    Ideas?

    Also, thanks for boosts as my bubble is German speaking.

    Also, wow! boost some of those good answers from the community... wow! ⬇️⬇️⬇️

    @blacktraffic @samsteiner much as I love S&A, Susan is still very much housekeeper (and the only one taking those roles)

    But there are Nancy and Peggy (in the same way there is George in F5)

    And they’re all posh English kids with all that entails…

    But a beautiful series on the importance of being children and having imagination…

    penwing,
    @penwing@wandering.shop avatar

    @samsteiner I re-read them recently and they are still delightful… but apparently the handful of school friends and I are weird in even knowing about them… as became apparent when only us could answer questions on them in our lockdown quizzes…
