Anyone over the age of 30 who has spend any time in tech-adjacent spaces still cheering for "joining" the is fucking deluding themselves. We've been through so many cycles of this shit over the past twenty years, how some people can still trust to do anything remotely ethical is beyond me.

They're not here to join, they're here to destroy. This is just the most cost-effective, PR-friendly way of doing it.

@dalias that’s why I called out the past twenty years: I remember RSS. I remember XMPP. Yes, both standards still exist, but they are diminished, because they’ve literally run the same playbook before (also google, obvs). It’s just about making sure the “average” user doesn’t even get the idea in their head that anything outside corporate control exists. They will sever the connection the moment enough people default to just signing up for Threads to post/read here.

With the trial against Sam Bankman-Fried getting up to speed and token prices being down, for a year I've been hearing that the community was never in it for the money but to build.

So. What has that "community" been building? Which new kind of service that solves actual peoples' problems has emerged from all that activity? Or is it building infrastructure again that's never going to be used for anything real?

Any pointers?

I read the whole “manifesto” and I’m pretty sure I’ve read speeches by actual Nazis that were less openly fascist. Also, my six year olds have a better, more nuanced approach to the world. It’s badly written, too. Overall just a steaming pile of 💩. Fuck billionaires. I don’t want them taxed, I want their wealth seized and redistributed.

Controversial opinion: I liked the original version of a lot. The emptiness, the barren universe, the relics of a dead culture, the harshness of the environments. I got out when the game became more social, because that’s not what I signed up for. I was having lots of feels being a lone explorer and would’ve gladly continued on that path. Alas, that’s not how games are made nowadays. Always need an online component.

    @taco that’s…not what happened. What happened is this: there was a non-binding referendum, which called for this to happen, it succeeded, and two consecutive city governments (we had to redo an election out of order for sheer incompetence) have said they would take it under advisement, but essentially ignored it. And even if they’ll implement some of those ideas, they will water it down as to make it functionally useless.

    @taco from your profile I can gather that you don’t live here. I do. I’ve lived in Berlin my entire life. I voted in the referendum. I’m 100% for this. It’s not going to happen anytime soon, if at all. What you’re referring to is a so-called “expert commission”, which is a bureaucratic tool to slow roll initiatives that corporations and centrist politicians don’t like. The “center” right party CDU currently fielding the mayor don’t want it to happen, so they won’t put it on the agenda.

    Spell checking on the Mac is really bad. It can't suggest a correction for "proces" -> "process". It's surprising the number of misspellings off by a single letter that it can't correct. I would have thought spell checking was a solved problem.
