@mbonsma This, as stated, is obviously incorrect. Otherwise the boxes that the puzzles come in would be larger in area than the assembled puzzle. However they are always smaller in area than the assembled puzzle.

Marvel's Box Office Rise (and Fall?) visualized.

I enjoyed the Marvels quite a lot, it certainly isn't a bad MCU film. Unsure why it did so poorly except because Disney refused to market it until the last possible moment.

Wakanda Forever was a FAR worse movie IMHO. What a boring, LONG slog that film was. Never finished watching it.

@gedeonm For me, and I’m guessing a lot of other folks, what is hurting Marvel at the box office is Disney+. I pay for Disney+ and it isn't cheap. I'm not going to pay for Disney+ and pay to see a Marvel movie in the theater. I'm fine waiting until it comes to Disney+. That’s why I have Disney+.

My dad enjoys feeding birds in his garden so I’m thinking to give him a Bird Buddy this holiday. Most reviews I find scream “We were paid by a startup to write this review”. @simonbs I got one for my mom this past summer. It works well. We got the one with the solar roof and the battery stays in the high 80 or low 90 percent range all the time.

In general I’d say it has been a good product.

@BasicAppleGuy Seems like a good time to remind folks that macOS Sonoma introduces a new feature that allows users to hide the contents of their Desktop. When using the Show Desktop command, the contents are revealed.

Normally, each time Twitter changed their logo, I'd be impressed with other sites that updated the logo on their social links quickly, and/or mock sites that still used the old (or extra old) logos. Now with X, I'm torn. is switching to the X logo now just something you have to do? Is it giving in and accepting Twitter is dead? Or should we hold out and keep using the old logo?

@davewoodx My take on this is that Twitter is dead. It ceased to be Twitter long before Musk rebranded it to X. IMO continuing to use the old logo to represent X is disrespecting what Twitter was.

@jamesthomson @davewoodx I guess as long as twitter.com still works (which will likely be forever), then this stance is defensible.

But it just seems wrong to me to call what is now essentially Musk’s personal website, Twitter. I feel like that is bestowing an honor upon it that it doesn’t deserve.

But I don’t care about it. I was never really a Twitter user. I was a Tweebot user. Now I’m an Ivory user and it’s even better than Tweetbot.

@jamesthomson @davewoodx Thanks to Ivory and to all of my good internet friends flocking to Mastodon, I haven’t missed a beat since Twitter was set on fire and X rose from the ashes. Or maybe a better description is that the pile of ashes was just renamed to X. Nothing has really risen or ascended to anything of value IMO.

After 1047 days, my AirPods Max might be dead. 💀🎧
They fail to connect to devices 80% of the time, often requiring 2-3 factory resets before repairing. Battery drain is also an issue; they'll drop 80-90% overnight, even inside their case.

@jamesthomson I agree that these product announcements are a bit disappointing, at least to me anyway, but I wouldn't say it is surprising. What more were you expecting beyond what was announced?

I'm excited about the M3 chips finally arriving, but I need something to replace my iMac Pro. I'm going to wait to see if there is an M3 family of Pro iMacs coming in 2024. It's a race to see if Apple gives me suitable replacement before macOS drops support for it.

@jamesthomson Yep, I agree with all of that. I'm very happy to see all 3 chips announced at once.
My guess as to why they did a mini keynote is because:

  1. The pre-recorded events are a lot easier to crank out than the live productions. So why not advertise the new products?
  2. They probably want to get a bump in first quarter sales for the holiday season with the most popular selling Mac models.

Apple's really trying hard this time round to convince Intel Mac owners to make the switch to Apple Silicon. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if Sonoma is the last version of macOS that runs on Intel. Apple is beyond done and ready to move on

the “Space Black”, which is only available on the M3 Pro and M3 Max models, sorry cheapskates!, is kind of black in person, but not as dark as the old plastic BlackBook.

the new anodization is supposed to reduce fingerprints, and in the 30 seconds I got to touch one earlier today, it seemed like there were fewer visible ones left on it. but we’ll see what it’s like in the real world.

So I guess M3 Pro is a downgrade/sidegrade from the M2 Pro. Max is a nice upgrade from the old stuff.

As someone who doesn't care about GPU performance I'm slightly annoyed at having to spend the fancy GPU tax to get the better CPU.

@paul I’m with you. I couldn’t conceive of purchasing any computer with only 8GB of RAM these days. But at the same time I’m running Sonoma on my 2016 12 inch MacBook with 8GB of RAM. It’s a couch machine for surfing and email and chatting and FaceTime etc. And it’s actually fine for all of that. So I guess it is defensible to sell a Mac for that use case with only 8GB. Sure, it seems odd to buy a MacBook Pro for that use case, but I bet a lot of folks do.

@davemark Since you didn’t put any constraints on the question, the answer is theft. Theft is the cheapest way to get one. Unless you get caught and factor in the legal expenses and reparations.
