Casting out a net to get wider reach on something the W.S. team has talked about...

Looking for art proposals for a Wandering.shop brand/look. We have a couple portfolio submissions, though someone able to work to the exact specs for Mastodon would be a bonus (not strictly needed).

Does anyone who has done work on the icons, avatars, banners, etc needed have a portfolio they'd like to share?

We can wrangle a tiny budget for this, though in-kind support wouldn't be turned down. Send links!

🥹 Elephant baby!

We don’t have one (yet!!!) but if anyone would like to join our fediverse writers’ cafe (and bring a baby elephant) we always have an invite code you can get from any member.

It’s just a groove we found to grow in, we’re not “closed” so much as we have a terribly kept secret handshake.

@flexghost Oh, no wait -wandering.shop is NOT a coop. We have a "by invite" policy but that's just a homegrown sign-up approval option.

CoSocial.ca IS the co-op.

Two instances - one admin in common (sorry, @Johannab and @johannab and a few more are a bit of a chaos goblin identity).

@flexghost Hi!

Would I be able to get a nod in tomorrow's fundraiser thread and/or nominate instances I'm involved with? There are 3, all could use support though their models vary. Lemme know what's needed (I missed some of your background on the Mastodon discord and from the last go).

Hey friends!

The Fedi moderation community is watching a cluster of inauthentic accounts popping up across numerous servers. These are posting bland, platitude-laden or word salad posts, unattributed images, or generated content along with a certain few hashtags to get attention.

These will not be able to register here unless invited, but please report them if you see them. Other moderators need to know.

A few years old now, but as I contemplate fediverse growth, this essay by @mmasnick is a thinky read for those in the instance moderation or community admin space.

https://www.techdirt.com/2019/11/20/masnicks-impossibility-theorem-content-moderation-scale-is-impossible-to-do-well/

Our hands-on, know-your-clients moderation paradigm can't survive 6- or 7-figure user numbers. But algorithmic moderation, as is presumed to be at least the first pass methodology in this essay, is bound to have both false-positive and false-negative results at levels which are in absolute terms, horrible

Good evening, Shop. Past my bedtime, but the Mastodon Mothership gang has made a discovery of a very poorly behaved server out there.

Contentnation dot net appears to be scraping(? not sure if that's the technically correct term for this) profiles, and their associated followers and posts, and replicating them on their own service giving the appearance that Fediverse accounts are presenting themselves via CN's own services.

proprietor,
@proprietor@wandering.shop avatar

We have bid that server blockity-BYEEEE! and IP blocked them for good measure as they're not a Mastodon host but some other thing using ActivityPub.

Unfortunately, I was able to find at least a handful of our users were being presented through this service, amongst hundreds of high-profile or high-engagement accounts. Because the content ported in was from the public timelines or public profiles (as far as we can tell), and it's now been replicated, we cannot "undo" what they already yoinked.

We usually keep this account sticking to Wandering.Shop business and updates, however, this 404 Media finding is something that may be of significant interest to a number of members.

Regardless of the intention of either of these Automattic properties vis-a-vis federation, those of you who have content hosted there may want to review this carefully.

Hello! It has been a while since we nudged anyone again but my recent blather has brought in your questions re: supporting Wandering.Shop.

Our donation links appear on the About page, and here's one of my occasional repeats:

https://donate.stripe.com/eVadSR6b3aXc1by6oo

or

https://buy.stripe.com/4gw7ut9nf2qGaM8

Anything you can offer is much appreciated. Both one-time and "subscription" donations have been set up to be configurable, up to a maximum cap.

proprietor,
@proprietor@wandering.shop avatar

Please be aware, we cannot offer any perk or receipt or elevated privileges.

Wandering.Shop is kept going by a volunteer collective, and essentially Friends&Family chipping in. Donation is never required; always appreciated, and goes 100% to server and service costs at this time.

If we ever find funds exceed those needs, we will be clear about that and about any other uses we may consider (that is a VERY long-off hypothetical).

proprietor, to random
@proprietor@wandering.shop avatar

Oh, gosh.

Because it's coming up again - DMs are NOT "PRIVATE messages" they are "Direct Mentions" or "Directed Messages" or something. Think of them like that, please.

Not encrypted, and not secret.

Yes, your administrators could read your DMs, with a little bother. And NO, we don't want to, can't be arsed to, really have better things to do, etc.

Keep in mind, your mail service admins can read your email, too. If you use Gmail, their algorithms are constantly doing so.

proprietor,
@proprietor@wandering.shop avatar

There's an important related to this, though, that everyone should remember.

Anyone you MENTION in your DMs can also read that message, so don't think you're sending something private to the person you mentioned first if you tag someone else. Possible even including a link to their post or profile includes them.

If you really want secure and private, exchange phone numbers or use something like Signal maybe. Or go outside, find your friend + a coffee and head to a park.

proprietor,
@proprietor@wandering.shop avatar

As of yet, the has never promised you any level of secrecy. Unfortunately there's a misplaced expectation based on previous siloed, corporate social media services that had a vested interest in you believing you had that. Some services offered slightly more sheltered DM capability (but admins always could read 'em).

What if we just turned the Fediverse off and back on again?

Anyone? Yes? No?

Good Morning, Shop.

Whack-a-Spam is ongoing. So sorry for those of you affected ...

Some folks have spoken up and said they don't see this. Others are putting in dozens of reports. I am not an under-the-hood code wizard by any description, however, the gist of this is, someone has let loose a scripted/automated sign-up-and-spam routine. The script has picked up and built in some Fediverse handles. Likely just random, it found you on the public timelines.

To my comrades in the Admin spheres:

Close your sign-ups. Unless you have a TEAM able to be online and moderating 24/7, you really should not have open sign-ups at this point in our evolution.

Deterring petty crime is almost always, functionally, about making yourself just the slightly more difficult mark.

proprietor, to random
@proprietor@wandering.shop avatar

Hey friends! This a request out to "help an Admin out here" with all the spammalammadingdong bullshit some of us are getting.

It's sometimes many extra clicks to determine if the spammer is a single account on an instance, vs. an entire instance spun up to spam.

When reporting, IF YOU CAN, could you pause long enough to take a look at the source and note it in your report?

You may ignore this and please still report. Just asking for the favour if you can spare the few moments and spoons.

Hello.

In case someone here is hearing about the AP-AT bridge.

We know.

We chattin' about it for now.

It'll be a non-issue, or it will be subject to moderation based on our rules and CoC just like any other instance or account out there.

If you are tempted to engage in any moral panic over it, please get some air. Study up on what a bridge actually is and what the whole point of ActivityPub is.

There will be more words in the near future, but it's late here right now.

Today I have a or for y'all because it's something it took me waaaaay too long to figure out how to do right. Until Mastodon makes it more clear or automated, here's how you get Lists to work for you:

Old-timers, pardon me for an "old news" thread, but I periodically repeat things for new members (ours, and other sites', as they sometimes wonder how we handle registrations and find one of us to ask). 1/?

proprietor,
@proprietor@wandering.shop avatar

----------------- The rundown on joining Wandering.Shop -----------------

Mastodon’s built-in options for new members are “Open” (anyone can just sign on), “Approval required” (every account request is sent to the Admin to research and review) or “Invitation”. Invitation can be set to allow anyone to generate an invite, or to limit that privilege to mods/admins.

Friends, there is one more change just entered into our CoC and I wanted to point this out specifically in case you have concerns. Under "Behavior not welcome ..." we are including:

"Non-consensual distribution of intimate material, graphic or textual, including that generated or augmented by AI programs. If sexually explicit material depicts, names, or simulates an identifiable person as its subject, it shall only be present with the full consent of the subject"

@proprietor@wandering.shop avatar

I have another small "under the hood" insight to share with all regarding one of our recent moderation/administration actions.

We have just defederated another host. This one was a Pixelfed instance that was in a very strange state, and behaving badly overall.

I'm sharing the situation because a complete defederation of another host is a no-takebacks, nuclear option and is not something we do casually or in the throes of indignation over user behaviour, even if it's several users.

Good day, Cafe clientele.

Your Wandering.Shop community volunteers have agreed that we will sign on to this commitment designed and promoted by IFTAS and GLAAD:

https://about.iftas.org/2024/01/30/targeted-misgendering-and-deadnaming-in-the-fediverse/

Our Rules and Code of Conduct are largely already aligned with this statement and certainly with the intention of it.

We are already looking at minor refinements to Rules and CoC, as they, and our internal team operations, are constantly up for refinement. We will include this shortly.
