Filling another self-inflicted wound in my record collection from my great record purge of yore. I guess my thinking was it’s not my favorite Minutemen record… anyway. Glad to have it back.

Someone on here recommended some music on Bandcamp saying it was in the same vein as GAS (and a couple other names that I don’t remember). Checking it out now and it is really REALLY like GAS. Now, I’m big fan of GAS and this is a fairly inventive facsimile but still. It’s pretty funny how indebted it is.

I haven’t shilled my band here in quite a long time. We haven’t been doing much this last couple of years to be honest as the singer has a wee baby but we’ll get round to some new bits eventually.

Going to put our stuff up on and once I get my arse in gear.

Over on the digital lo-fi I wrote up a post about Steve Albini and what he meant to me as a musician, writer, aging GenX punk rocker. This all still feels unreal to me.

@jake4480 Thanks. I appreciate your attention and letting me know. Feels surreal and I can’t imagine how the people close to him must feel.

The Fuck?!!!

When I was bridging Bluesky yesterday I was looking at his account thinking that oh, yeah, I’ll be able to follow him.

Jesus, this has me shook. He seemed like he was really settling in to be one of the most interesting and thoughtful older punk rockers. Like he owned his past edgelord bullshit and was enjoying talking about music and poker and recording. https://flipboard.com/@pitchfork/latest-news-pqu92e91z/-/a-2v8As547SQ-U9JxCI7RVZQ%3Aa%3A910329480-%2F0

Who's got some music they'd like to have heard and written about? Need a few good tracks for this week's write-up. Send me links to what you're currently promoting!

(More Info here: https://www.etherdiver.com/2024/04/04/opm-other-peoples-music/ )

@puffer@esoteric.party avatar

@etherdiver All my bandcamp releases are pretty old at this point. I have a bunch of new music in the pipeline but no release dates.

If I would recommend anything of mine it would be my Ukrike Mod “les beaux oiseaux”
https://ulrikemod.bandcamp.com/album/les-beaux-oiseaux

Or oxy:Cable “Nips & Bits”
https://soundemissary.bandcamp.com/album/nips-bits

Or ODF “...to be untangled...”
https://occidentaldirtfarmers.bandcamp.com/album/to-be-untangled

If none of it up your alley or is too old no worries. I’ll send you new music.

I was unaware Daryl Hall did this kind of power pop / post-punk music. Is all of his solo stuff like this? Digging this track rn. 🎸 🤩

This 7 minute funk epic is one of the best songs of the era. I have it on vinyl and the jacket is also super groovy.

@mrcompletely @giantspecks @mediageek @Defiance Ooo… I haven’t heard that.I’ll track it down. Nightbirds is also a favorite record around the household.

Chord chart for new track ‘1986’.
Inspired by the All In setting on my UA 1176 compressor, this riff has full chord strumming that needs a thinner pick. This might be the track that requires me to mic the Half Pint. As good as my other amp is into my audio interface, the Half Pint sounds better, even recorded on my iPhone.

puffer,
@puffer@esoteric.party avatar

@woolie @ology @ambergrey @NigelTufnel We’re talking picks? These are my pick of choice. The lettering is raised so the is a nice circle of ridges to grab.

Saw a post on here recently in my feed from someone that I no longer follow (it was a retoot) and it reminded me that the reason I no longer followed them is because they asked if they could give me some feedback on my song, and I said sure, and then they sent 3-4 PRIVATE messages telling me my voice sounded fake, my drums sounded dead, and proceeded to give me pointers on what vocal comping was 💀

Yes! I’ve just saying “web search” it. I don’t use DDG either and I’m loath to tie the common vernacular to another private entity. But it’s not pithy I’ll give you that.

Had a great day so far for my birthday. Worked from home, went shopping for two hours, learned the bass line to the Quincy Jones version of ‘Summer in the City’, worked on Jobim’s ‘Corcovado’ on guitar, filled in 7.5 hours on Clockify

one thing that stops me from fully embracing 'old man yelling at clouds' were the "old" punk rockers in my town when I was in high school and listening to whatever Husker Du and whatnot and there were these guys who were so old they were probably 26 AHAHAH telling me "Yeah Husker Du were better when they were the Buzzcocks" and all this crap "Why does anyone do hardcore music after The Germs" and while I thank them for turning me onto good music I also thought and still do FUCK YOU

puffer,
@puffer@esoteric.party avatar

@SpaceAce 100%. Thing was for a lot of my youth I was pretty strident about my musical taste and I think back now to a lot of the contemporary music I could’ve been enjoying if I’d been even a little more open minded—tho this came and went. Now I don’t have the time or money to really investigate every thing that comes to my attention. Some stuff does break through, e.g. The Armed. But I would never have the hubris to say good music isn’t being made any more.
