Bad people are wiping the entire www. At least half of links I'd saved 5 years ago are dead that pertain to what I then suspected was suspicious or nefarious activity. I have a library of screenshots but the sources have since disappeared.

@StillIRise1963 hear hear, I know it's difficult for me to drop Google, but I've been making a concerted effort over the past few years to say "Do a web search" rather than "Google it"
@StillIRise1963 for more than a year I don't use Google anymore, still use the word.
I blame it on Brave browser. The Dutch version says "Google zoeken" (Google search) while it doesn't matter what engine you use. 😇
@StillIRise1963 I'm getting a bit older.. Googles come and go... Before Google it was called, Altavista. Later there will be another favorite search engine what will do the same. 😉 @brave
@vosje62@StillIRise1963@brave I did search things in Altavista, but I never Altavisted (or Highviewed?) anything. Same for Metacrawler… seems quite creepy to “metacrawl” things… why did we accept “googling” things so easily? We ate the “Don't be evil” motto bait, hook, and sink…

In Florida they spray paint you eggshell white and force you to wear flip-flops and sing Jimmy Buffet trash tunes, if you even mention going to a library to look anything up.

Yes! I’ve just saying “web search” it. I don’t use DDG either and I’m loath to tie the common vernacular to another private entity. But it’s not pithy I’ll give you that.
@StillIRise1963 Let it just become a meaningless verb that represents the action, and unenforceable by trademark and copyright.
It'll be a generic word like kleenex or xerox.
@earthlingusa@StillIRise1963 my phone is set to automatically use DuckDuckGo. I rarely find the answers I seek there either. It's not just a Google problem (although tbc Google is the worst), the whole web has been blended into an SEO AI bot mush.
@StillIRise1963 My stubborn refusal to generically say brand names on social media and in private conversation wins out again. I just didn't anticipate we'd have to go back to asking reference librarians to escape the LLM Markov chain deluge of worthless text.
