I keep thinking back to this Microlino at Fully Charged Live. Reusable water bottles became acceptable, being vegan is now cool, and so is wearing vintage clothes. So who is going to step up to the critical task of making small cars fashionable? The trend towards giant SUVs is ludicrous, incredibly wasteful and dangerous, and bad for our cities. If you must use a car, it should be as small as possible. Where are the micro-car visionaries/influencers? WE NEED YOU.

@helenczerski Aren't they all riding bikes and cargo bikes?

I'm ok an ICNG at last. Except I'm stuck in on carriage as the door doesn't work.

Why are we only going 80kph? The super elevation on the high speed line at such low speeds is... Disconcerting...

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

Mains power sockets, usb sockets, but no bins by the seats... That's gonna result in messy trains in the long run...

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

Yep. Found a chocolate bar wrapped shoved down the side of a seat.

quixoticgeek,

I really like the big windows. I hope they will take these trains through the train wash with some regularity so they stay clean.

Was trying to find bacon in the freezer. Couldn't find any, but did find pigs and blankets left over from Xmas. So today's breakfast is a baguette filled with pigs in blankets.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@adrianfry alas no eggs available. But I'm very happy with it as a combination. I was going to use the bacon for a sausage and bacon baguette anyway. So this just makes cooking easier.

@els76uk @RantyHighwayman they apply to the pavement/verge for 14m parallel to the road. (Excluding private property).

TIL that the scp command does not, by default, compress files it transfers, and that you need to add the -C flag to make it do that, and by doing that I have sped up my transfer speed about 40x, and without this knowledge I have probably wasted literally days of my life waiting for things in the past.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@jimbob it's not default because it uses more CPU and doesn't always make an improvement in performance. If you are already copying a compressed file, adding -C simply uses more CPU for no actual performance gain. If you have plenty of CPU at each end, and you're moving compressible data, using "tar -jcf - | ssh <host stuff> 'tar -xjf -' " will get better raw performance.

Could someone please explain why this style of water bottle is so popular? I see them a lot. I've been told it's cos you get a cup and a bottle. But if you're using the cup, the bottle is then open, to be easier to spill... Or attract wasps... It just feels like poor design. No doubt it's won many design awards. I just don't get it...

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@happydisciple how often do you use the cup functionality?

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@holly ah. In summer I just have multiple bottles so I leave some in the freezer.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@holly for my cycle bottles, rather than ice cubes (which rattle), I lay a bottle with about ⅓rd fill of water in the freezer at an angle. Then when I head out for the ride, I just fill bottle with water. The ice then melts slowly keeping the water cold. But doesn't rattle.

This yarn has been on a more than twenty year journey to me. Was spun from the wool of my mentors sheep, sold to a friend of hers whose wife was knitter but never ended up using it. This winter he mailed it to me. And the question is - what should I make? One something (a shawl maybe)? Many socks and hats?

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@bethsawin temperature shawl?

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@bethsawin Yes, maybe do it per month from when the yarn was first shawn, upto the present day.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@bethsawin I know right.

I bought a couple of 1-2-3 blocks, and some bolts to attach them to each other. And some more bolts in different lengths. And erm, I'm not sure what I've created...

@jon Have we worked out a way to buy the Deutschland ticket for just one month ?

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@jon I've been there a couple of times. I'm trying to do 5 countries in a single ride. Starting in Heerlen, taking in the Vennbahn, then along the border of Luxembourg and finish in Apache.

quixoticgeek,
@quixoticgeek@v.st avatar

@jon Cheers. Now I just need to work out how to get from Perl-Schengen back to .NL entirely with a Deutschland ticket... with a full size bike...

Just got kicked off an NS train for getting stuck in the door getting on. Conductor closed the door on me. Trapping my bike. Police came. Kicked me off. Now I miss my connection for the metro. Gonna file a complaint. Utterly abhorrent behaviour from the conductor. Even the police agreed I was in the right.

Have thrown a kit grenade. Bits of damp kit hanging all over the place to dry. Sleeping bag is not the freshest smelling item of kit. I hope a good airing is enough. They are never as warm once they've been washed. Now I think I'm gonna curl up and have a nap, and try to get over the stupid train conductor.
