Why are authoritarian-minded rulers so thin-skinned?

In Uzbekistan, for example, authorities are increasingly imprisoning people for “insulting the president online.” The criminal charge could get you 5 years in prison. It’s absurd.

@andrewstroehlein There's no such thing as total control, and this is another example of the absurdity and harm that results from trying to achieve [total control] through brute force. They can't win, but they can do a lot of damage while they're losing

    @DrALJONES That reminds me of a certain decreasingly admired Prime Minister who said, apparently straight-faced, that there was no evidence of corruption in Canberra.

    When I was a teen, I was aggressively anti-theist, imagining myself quite clever for demonstrating how silly religious beliefs are.

    But life is fucking hard and I learned not to begrudge anyone any solution they’ve come up with to make life a little more comprehensible to them.

    I don’t share anyone’s religious beliefs, but it’s not as if I’ve figured out how to run my own life successfully. I shouldn’t be in the business of telling other people how or how not to handle the world.

    rancoisse,
    @rancoisse@aus.social avatar

    @HeavenlyPossum @Radical_EgoCom Acting according to our finite conceptions, religious OR otherwise, in an infinite reality, will tend toward absurd results. That absurdity becomes harmful when resources are applied to the futile effort to force reality to conform to the belief.

    Let's take a moment and remember that Halloween isn't just for kids to collect candy.

    Halloween is rooted in the idea that the life of those who have passed, should be celebrated.

    When you die, how will your life be remembered? Will you be remembered for your compassion, humility, or zest for life? Will you be remembered for your cruelty, your anger, or your pessimism?

    Take this time to look inward. In a world constantly in turmoil, how will you be remembered when your time has come?

    Been thinking about this whole business and the way it seems to stand in the way of meaningful solutions, proper mitigation and often the same applies to all the "fixes" that get sort of watered down under our current policy. Been thinking about the "why".

    After understanding that our current regulations all favor economic growth and free competition as the very first principle, there can be no "fixing the things" under this model.
