OK, this is a walkthrough of the weird VNC thing #rabbit #r1 uses for connecting accounts. Again, I'm not saying there is anything necessarily wrong with doing this. I am saying there are way better ways to do this. And the clipboard button workaround is very funny.

rcarmo,
@rcarmo@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl that is the jankiest integration possible. Also, your password is known to the remote VNC server before you paste it in and they could conceivably log your keystrokes remotely... Engineering-wise, that is not even defensible, because I have to wonder how they're capturing the Spotify access token to bind it to your account (non of the answers are comfortable to contemplate).

and have transformed computing indeed: we moved from a completely deterministic approach to telling computers what to do to one where we mumble various spells and incantations and hope they achieve something.

Truly a wonder of our age.

@thelinuxEXP Random question, since I don't remember you doing it: Have you looked at Fedora spins like https://projectbluefin.io and http://bazzite.gg?

rcarmo,
@rcarmo@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP Well, Bazzite has been working great for me as a Steam server (https://taoofmac.com/space/blog/2024/02/03/2000), and I’m getting comfortable with Bluefin as a dev box because it's so much less hassle to manage. YMMV, but I think the immutable spins are on to something here.

@rcarmo Can I ask for an accessibility tweak to your site's CSS?

I usually read your blog in my feed reader, but wanted to look up the link to your Gist with writing feedback prompts. So I was scanning a post for links on your site and had trouble finding them.

I have red/green color deficiency. To me, the link color blends in with the text. If you grayscale a screenshot ("Douglas Hofstadter" is a link, surname is grayscaled) you notice that there's no difference in tone to body text.

rcarmo,
@rcarmo@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze hmmm. I chose red and removed underlines because I was sick of blue. Have you tried dark mode? I used blueish for that.

rcarmo,
@rcarmo@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze ah, I seem to have gotten rid of blue in dark mode too. I’ll see what I can do, but messing with CSS is very far down my TODO. Maybe there’s some ARIA stuff I can turn on.

rcarmo,
@rcarmo@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze yeah, I can add underlines on hover, for instance. It’s just that I have to rebundle all the CSS and rebuild the entire site…

rcarmo,
@rcarmo@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze check the source. I bundle the entire CSS and version it to greatly improve caching and loading speeds (having a zillion CSS files is the worst possible thing). But I can do p:hover, so you'll only need to scrub the mouse over the text to see all the links pop out.

rcarmo,
@rcarmo@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze try this:

.blog-namespace p:hover a.duplicate, a {
color: ;
text-decoration: underline;
-webkit-text-decoration-skip: ink;
text-decoration-skip: ink;
}

rcarmo,
@rcarmo@mastodon.social avatar

@ctietze that nested hover is already in the current CSS, but not without the underline. I’ll make sure it goes into the next bundle.

And then there were two. I think this is going to be my standard SBC desktop from now on…

@ctietze this is the Radxa Zero I use as a sidecar. This time I may snapshot the config.

@cstross but I'm fine tuning the prompt for the “enthusiastic VC marketing pitch" version, and that should be properly horrifying and brain melting.

>>> no, what is the relation between Accelerando the book and lobsters
My apologies for any confusion earlier. In Charles Stross's science fiction novel "Accelerando," lobsters play a symbolic role in the story. The
character Manfred Macx discovers a group of sentient lobsters while exploring the Virtual Realities (VRs) created by an advanced artificial intelligence
named Panoply.
