Listen, at 4:33 into this programme, to how many of the vox-pop voices, supposedly recorded in Dumfries today, have distinctly southern English accents. I know Dumfries well: there are English voices there, certainly, but they're a distinct minority. What are the BBC playing at here?

@simon_brooke This is utterly shameless.

Has the treatment of the made you more or less likely to join them?

@raghnallborders As a left-leaning independence supporter I generally harbour support for both SNP and Greens - but they've both come out of this looking far worse than they did a week or so ago. So no, less likely.

The “Billy Boys” song originates with Billy Fullerton, leader of the Billy Boys of Brigton Cross, a Protestant street gang in the 1920s. Fullerton was awarded a medal for strike-breaking during the 1926 General Strike and formed a Glasgow branch of the British Union of Fascists.

Football broadcasting in Scotland:

  • man in crowd shouts that the referee is a twat
  • commentator: "we apologise if any of our listeners were offended by the language picked up by our mics"
  • 50,000 people chant about murdering Catholics
  • commentator: "fabulous atmosphere here in Ibrox tonight"

The broadcasters love to sweep this shit under the carpet - so they're complicit in the continuation of this type of behaviour being in any way considered acceptable.

I'm up in the hills behind Parton so prob only about 20km from you I reckon.

I'm getting the sense that the sun might break through here soon ...

readyStateFail,
@readyStateFail@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke Not quite - 2 miles up the dead-end road from Parton village hall .. if that helps!

@simon_brooke Hmm .. I don't think so but only been here seven years. Before ma time?

I do know James H @ Standingstone though - he's been over here a few times as he is good friends with Gordy, who also lives here. They used to live together with the Mungos crowd at Littlehill in Ayrshire - way back!

Today being Thursday, it's my day for the big bike. I went into Castle Douglas for 20 litres of tractor oil and a load of groceries. I came back by the old road – first time I've tried it with the big bike. Just over 40 kilometers horizontally, just over half a kilometre vertically, just over two hours riding time. Tired but happy.

Approaching the top of the climb, still through conifer plantation, still with rusty bracken, still with water running down the ruts. Peaks are visible between the trees ahead.
At the saddle of the pass, looking over the wee lochan towards the peak of Dungairie. The slopes are covered in rusty coloured bracken. In the foreground, the big cargo bike is parked in the middle of the track.
At the end of the trip, the bicycle computer shows 506 metres ascent, with 74% battery remaining.

This looks great! Good work and thanks for sharing - I'll need to check out that old road.

Is 51.8km/h Max Speed accurate?

That sounds mildly terrifying!

Now there's a man who looks like he's got the weight of the world on his shoulders!

The sculpture of Atlas by James Young on the top of the Standard Buildings on Hope Street in Glasgow. They were design by James Thomson in 1889, with the top storeys added by J.B. and W.A. Thomson in 1909.

And before anyone points it out, I know in the original mythology that Atlas was condemmed to hold up the sky with his shoulders and not the Earth.

The towers and turrets of Kelvingrove Art Gallery in the west end of Glasgow. This is one of those buildings I'll never tire of photographing as changes in the light hitting it means it has a slightly different look every time I pass it, even if it's only a few minutes later.
