This week, is onboarding its first customer. That customer will be running a server.

It’s apparent that the needs servers. We’re one of the first Fediverse managed hosts to support Lemmy. And we’re currently testing , so that’s coming soon.

As you all know, isn’t ready for public access yet. But we might make an exception soon for people seeking to create and servers.

I would like to see Dingbats become not uncommon for digital text, like it was for print at one point in time.

(Although it would be better if the technology people use to digitally "write" and "draw" made it easier to do this.)

...

An example of from the late 1800s is in the attached image.

Back in the day, some people set up a BBS in their home, and used it sort of like a personal website.

Posting content on topics they were interested in.

Although (different from the static personal websites) BBSes usually had the "social" aspect built into them. In that other people could contribute content to, have discussions, comment, etc.

@Bicyclejohn

It depends on what you mean by "replace".

The Fediverse may cause centralized social-media networks to join the Fediverse.

There are some hints of that happening now.

Facebook / Meta has created a new social-media network that is part of the Fediverse.

Tumblr and Flickr are said to be joining the Fediverse.

So, some "popular social media" may become one with the Fediverse.

As a kid, The Iron Sheik (i.e., Hossein Khosrow Ali Vazir) was one of my favorite Pro Wrestlers.

I even had a toy of him.

Reading about and their plan to follow Twitter into charging for APIs... https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/06/reddits-plan-to-kill-third-party-apps-sparks-widespread-protests/

... I'm learning about Lemmy, https://join-lemmy.org/ , which looks very cool as a distributed discussion platform!

... although it does make we wonder - are we kind of re-inventing USENET? Just with newer protocols and UIs?

🤔

[P.S. SPOILER FOR REDDIT OWNERS: It doesn't appear to be working out too well for Twitter! Maybe not the best idea to copy.]

Regarding:

"although it does make we wonder - are we kind of re-inventing USENET? Just with newer protocols and UIs?"

Yes, but indirectly.

But USENET copied / re-invented some stuff from BBS.

(I.e., USENET wasn't the original electronic version of this type of application.)

And BBS copied / re-invented some stuff that was happening in the physical world.

A neighborhood being walkable isn't just about having stores & parks nearby, etc.

It is also about women feeling safe when they walk around in the neighborhood.

Nothing is "official" on the Fediverse.

Because it is decentralized, no one controls it (and thus nothing can be "official").

Juts pondering my next skill boost...

Anyone with any experience of injection moulding?

I have STL files that 3D print nicely - casework for some PCBs.

Any recommendations for having nice good quality proper plastic cases done by, for example, injection moulding?

@revk

I've been very interested in injection-molding, but haven't tried it yet.

(Mostly due to a lack of space, in my home, for an injection-molding machine.)

Because CSS wasn't in (common) usage when the label "web developer" came into use.
