Sixteen years ago tomorrow I published the first post on the fediverse.

https://web.archive.org/web/20080618164355/http://identi.ca/notice/1

It's still visible on Identi.ca today, although the URL format changed a few years ago, and the redirect plugin stopped working a few years after that.

https://identi.ca/evan/note/Y0QwGyc1QYilqqawkDrQlg

Thanks to everyone who made identi.ca a great place to be, and thanks to everyone who's expanded the fediverse since then.

Thanks especially to people building software, making art, telling their personal stories, inviting friends or organizations, joining groups, making jokes, thinking hard, making connections, liking, reading, listening, watching, administering, moderating, supporting, sharing, being kind, making friends, answering questions, and otherwise laying down the careful and intricate network of connections between people, software and content that is slowly but surely changing the world.

I'm prototyping a fediverse sharing button. Anyone interested in giving it a try?

Feature highlights:

  • shows a logo of supported fediverse software
  • lets you share selected text
  • remembers the last fediverse domain used

I still don't understand how fedi instances work between each other, how can instances even block each other?? How can you find an instance that doesn't block others? How hard is it to host your own? So many questions!

Weird question: can anyone recommend an email hosting service that is more or less just an inbox/outbox? No groupware or collaboration, just spin up a bunch of accounts and integrate them with your own suite of apps?

I’m really interested in using Nextcloud as a full replacement for Google Workspace in our organization. It’s really good! There are ways to automatically provision accounts in there, through SSO or other kinds of integration, so that new people get access on their first login.

But, almost every hosted email service is kind of trying to be their own Google Workspace alternative, with bells and whistles that I don’t really need.

If you've ever wanted to contribute to the Mastodon project documentation, here's a fantastic issue from @trwnh that lists all the undocumented stuff: https://github.com/mastodon/documentation/issues/1211

Is there a software that able to show content? I talking about rendering STLs, with uploading previews together with file. It can be done using raw or Three.js as a way to render it.

Niche question: I used to quite like reading Winter's Gemlog before rawtext.club took a dump with its trousers on. Does anyone know if they're posting anywhere else now? #gemini

I hate that Google’s AI is named Gemini. Now when I tell people that I explore geminispace they think AI rather than smolnet. To be fair, no one really thought smolnet anyway.

OK, I'm doing one more round of people sponsoring months of TEXTFILES.COM. $100 gets your name at the top of the page, and I throw that into hosting costs. I'm set for the next two months but I like to have it set up for six or more. If you want it, paypal is jason@textfiles.com. Venmo is @textfiles

Hello Fediverse!

I grew up programming in Applesoft Basic, and now I spend my days writing apps for Apple products.

I’m looking for my next role part-time or full-time. Please get in touch if you would like to work with me!

We need a better framework for how to think about online relationships between people, and between people and organizations/websites. Logged on/off from a authentication perspective and follow/block from a social media perspective are really not quite right and not at all complete.

We did a bit of work on this when I was on the board of what was still called the Me2B Alliance, and of course there is seminal work by Doc Searls in ProjectVRM, but much remains to be done. The social web needs it!

@J12t@social.coop avatar

Finally I'm getting around to listen to @mike 's Dot.Social episode with @rklambo and @pcottle from , talking about .

Mike asks the most important question first: "why are you [Meta] doing this [Fediverse integration]?"

[cont]

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Mike asks: how has the reaction been?

Rachel: people are excited to see that we are actually doing this! So far we are not actively promoting the Fediverse, but the adoption numbers have been good. We also still have some things to work through, like communicating tradeoffs.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Mike: what are the next steps?

Rachel: first milestone was the publish out from Threads.

2nd and next: get engagement from the fediverse back into threads ie comments and likes etc

3rd: follow people from the fediverse in Threads.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Peter: people have been asking creators on Threads to turn on Fediverse sharing (it's opt-in): it's so much easier to turn on fediverse sharing than to post to an entirely different social network.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Mike: What are the main concerns?

Rachel: fair share of criticism. Trying to approach this as a good citizen.

Pulling the rug out of it now would also impact very negatively the overall story Meta has been trying to build about open source and how they engage with the community.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Mike commends Rachel and Peter and other Meta people reaching out to the community and listening to concerns and feedback, such as at :

I would agree with that. It's unusual for a large company to do this kind of thing, but absolutely the right and necessary thing to do when engaging with the Fediverse.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Rachel: one of the challenges with the fediverse is: how do you figure out where your content went, and how can I follow that conversation that now exists on multiple different servers?

Wants all replies in the same spot. That helps feel people in control.

This is actually a really good point imho. It's not just confusing that reply trees aren't eventually consistent across the fediverse, but it creates uncertainty because I don't even know what people say in response.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Both Rachel and Peter suggest that some moderation functionality could/should become part of the protocol stack. does composable moderation and that is really cool. Peter hopes that may learn from it and evolve in this direction.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Peter: one of the advantages of #ActivityPub is that you can limit exposure to other servers.

#AtProto is all public, and that's another reason why #ActivityPub is a better match for Meta.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Rachel: re monitization, so far we are only focused on giving people a great experience on Threads

Going forward, they want to hear from lots of people and communities and regulators before they figure out what is acceptable and what not.

Peter: quotes a session from @fediforum where business models were discussed.

Mike: there will be many business models.

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Mike: "one of the original sins of the internet is that the relationship between the person and a website was not done at the protocol level. I see the fediverse with the ability to have a direct relationship as a core answer to them treating people with respect."

This is as close as a pitch as I have heard from somebody who hasn't been part of the VRM community! https://cyber.harvard.edu/projectvrm/Main_Page

J12t,
@J12t@social.coop avatar

Peter is thanking the community working so well together and help debug bugs live!

"We are all on team fediverse!"
