I have opinions on things but I'd rather discuss them with you over a drink rather than on a public platform. Sorry :)

I like how a rocket explosion can be described as a "rapid unscheduled disassembly".

We should come up with clever ways to describe server outages as well :D

@vwbusguy python f strings only arrived in 3.6, though.

If one meant to use easily compatible string formatting across versions of python (including python 2.7!), %s was the thing where .format() wasn't used.

I only truly started affording myself the luxury of using f-strings recently with the EOL of 3.5.

Supported versions of python

rfc2549,
@rfc2549@fosstodon.org avatar

@vwbusguy working with stable distros like RHEL, Debian and Ubuntu LTS in the field means you'll be seeing them in the wild, long after the upstream EOL date.

RHEL 7 shipped in 2014 with python 2.7 by default and can be supported well into 2028 for those who are willing to pay for it.

Why does everybody wait last minute to submit to conferences .. 75% of talk submissions was in the last 24 hours before closing .. do you kids realize how stressfull that is for the organisers ?

rfc2549,
@rfc2549@fosstodon.org avatar

@krisbuytaert I sympathize.

I submitted as soon as I could earlier this week and this might not be the case for everyone but:

  1. I was overwhelmed by other things. Since the deadline was further away, I de-prioritized it to take care of the other things. Sorry.

  2. The FOSDEM devrooms were recently announced with some CFPs still not opened.

The camp CFP has been opened for a long time but the devrooms had not yet been decided.

I wonder if more overlap would've been beneficial ?

rfc2549,
@rfc2549@fosstodon.org avatar

@krisbuytaert can't do much about my personal circumstances, sorry.

For FOSDEM, I say this since for many folks, their attendance to the camp depends on whether they get to travel to FOSDEM at all.

This depends on a lot of factors, including stands, devrooms, the CFP and such.

These explanations are logical and rational, though. Some will wait at the last minute because that's what they do.

How do you personally pronounce ?

(Boosts OK. Also, this is not a question about the "correct" pronunciation.)

rfc2549,
@rfc2549@fosstodon.org avatar

@xahteiwi I used to pronounce it "pie pie" until I was pointed here by a colleague: https://pypi.org/help/#pronunciation

Also "pie pie" can be confused with the alternative python interpreter, PyPy.

@vwbusguy I could have forgiven if it was an old blog post (of which there are many like these) but a fresh post in 2023 starting with Ubuntu 18.04 instead of at least 22.04 is not great.

    @jpmens that sounds like one of many orgs that already used Office 365 and couldn't justify the expense of anything else because Teams is included for free.

    Today, at work, I tested out our new internal platform by scaling up a CSaaS.

    It wraps the perl with a Java web service with a caddy frontend in the VM template that itself backends a load balancer.

    The CSaaS works well with browser and curl alike!

    @rfc2549@fosstodon.org avatar

    @vwbusguy once upon a time many years ago it had some growing pains (especially with the metadata server?).

    I haven't had the opportunity to revisit it since then but I am sure it has improved tremendously.

    Perhaps there is some outdated reputation that no longer holds true.

    Some people see a bug, and they'll always attempt a fix.

    Others are perfectly cool with applying workarounds forever.

    It is important to understand which of your colleagues/collaborators fall into which category.

    No, this does not only apply to technology or development, far from it.

    rfc2549,
    @rfc2549@fosstodon.org avatar

    @xahteiwi I have rabbitholed countless times to fix underlying foundational mistakes that made the issue possible in the first place.

    It's satisfying, but honestly, exhausting.
    Other stuff will likely break because they rely on flawed way of doing it, leading to more work and the rabbithole continues endlessly.

    Workarounds are often times the very definition of tech debt: you're "fixing" it now and you'll pay interest in complexity and maintenance later if you don't truly fix things.
