I've got to the point where I won't click on something I like the look of on shopping websites because I know if I do the algorithm will continue to thrust that item in front of me until the end of time

rye,
@rye@ioc.exchange avatar

@sue it's so bad now, I dont' even shop online any more. Most of my shopping I go to a craft fair, or maker space to buy things. Many of them use the larger systems but also accept cash.

What's old, is new?

Hi community I hve some very specific questions to ask about python but I don’t know how to ask them.

Is there anyone in this space who can donate an hour of mentoring time?

Thank you.

@cazabon I'm working in jupyter notebook with a very large data set, but I need to examine the relationships of the data. I made a sankey diagram, but it's too large, I tried to display in javascript but had trouble with that. So very stuck with the problem and not sure how to either optimize the data or restructure the problem.

There's another way to look at this: Most people know they shouldn't trust everything they read online....
85% of people worry about online disinformation, global survey finds https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/nov/07/85-of-people-worry-about-online-disinformation-global-survey-finds?CMP=share_btn_tw

@jeffjarvis that was exactly the efforts of the misinformation campaigns to sew distrust in the memory hole.

@doomscroller wow Arctic permafrost holds an estimated 1,700 billion metric tons of carbon – roughly 51 times the amount of carbon the world released as fossil fuel emissions in 2019.

The Problem:

While there have been some attempts to document publicly disclosed security incidents, a fundamental problem exists: there is a lack of an all-encompassing, freely available, unprocessed dataset on security incidents that offers the depth required to support both community research and corporate decision-making. Various organizations do collect and, to some extent, share consolidated datasets, but these datasets are often not structured for easy data manipulation and transformation necessary for research. Additionally, the underlying data might not be openly accessible to the public. This deficiency has posed longstanding challenges for researchers investigating security incidents and for risk managers who lack access to dependable data for their risk assessments.

Gosh, what a coincidence how a mercenary hacker decided to hack climate advocates just for fun and the fruits of that were used by Exxon Mobil to deter state AG investigations and influence judicial proceedings. Surely nothing here for the DOJ to investigate.

@maxkennerly It's so unfortunate the dismantling of the EPA.

And we wonder why the climate is the way it is.

Today is the first day since like the middle of August where I feel I’m actually back in my routine, which still includes some adventure and new challenges, but is basically everything to me as an AuDHD creative.

I am praying that the universe leaves me alone for at least a couple months to be healthy and functional and get some of my work done. 🙏 No more isolating crises, just productive feedback loops– jinx, knock wood, no whammy, etc.

Hi, I'm looking to connect with other
I'm pivoting from security to and have devoted this year to learning fundamentals of SWE.

But here's some of my sticking points - I don't know what I don't know.

I've been reading books about data science.

I have lots of experience in systems engineering, but that MIGHT not be the right structure for data. But it's the approach I took.

Would love input or feedback.

@tshirtman Thanks!

I took a forensics course this year and it really opened my eyes to making functions.

I got tired of making manual scripts so then I started a journey.

I don't know where to go to ask questions. But I'm appreciative of your help.

    If you're programming a game where a boat moves through water, you might be tempted (as I would) to change the V-shape angle of the waves behind the boat based on how fast the boat was moving!

    What if I told you that that V-shaped angle is always 19.47°, regardless of how fast the boat is travelling? 😱

    This pattern even holds true for a duck traversing a pond. 🦆

    The envelope of these waves stands at a fixed angle, and the wake has a characteristic feathered pattern.

    rye,
    @rye@ioc.exchange avatar

    @pikuma wow. This is amazing
