Is this right?

My brain is telling me this is clearly not correct/complete. ... What am I missing?

4|2.8=16 and 4|8 but 4 is not prime ??

@christianp

Thanks Christian, I'll have to let this rattle around my brain a little.

The reason I'm reading this particular book (Proofs, Jay Cummings) is that I kept getting confused by mathematical statements and proofs.

Would you say the text is poorly worded, or is it the case that I need to better understand that phrasing?

Yeah Arab countries have been shameful.

“My message to the Arab world, particularly to the Gulf, is where are you? Because they’re making billions each day on oil revenues. A tiny fraction of those oil revenues would see UNRWA’s financial problems disappear overnight. This unconscionable gap inflicted by these Western countries would be filled very quickly,” Gunness told Al Jazeera.

“Some of the most desperate people in the Middle East are now facing starvation, they’re facing famine, and the Arab states need to step up to the plate.”

Which countries have cut funding to UNRWA, and why?

Microsoft is trying to get all email users, including governments, to migrate to their cloud-based solutions. This makes their email cloud THE prime target for nation-state/state sponsored hackers. Yet Microsoft appears to be leaving gaping security holes in the setup of their email services: https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/01/in-major-gaffe-hacked-microsoft-test-account-was-assigned-admin-privileges/

currently listening to The Real Podcast ep 189

I've never really been into coding podcasts but having tried this - it seems generally useful as passive listening and then paying attention to useful items.

Distance Estimation (by Gradient) Method - Explained

... for rendering the fine fractal detail around the Mandelbrot and Julia sets, detail that is missed by the standard "divergence test" algorithm.

Includes a derivation of the iterative gradient calculation too - something I couldn't find online when researching.

Why is that web browsers, after 30 years, still cannot properly format HTML pages for printing?

rzeta0,
@rzeta0@mastodon.social avatar

@J12t

I don't understand it.

If it can be rendered on a digital display, then surely it can be rendered on paper?

A browser window can be resized to the same aspect ratio and scale as paper.

So what's the difference?

@nixCraft I use a DSLR camera for video calls for when I need to make a professional impression (for my business).

I don't use a USB dongle but a thunderbolt 3 adapter (BlackMagic Recorder 3G).

It only worked with Firefox - not chrome or safari - the last time I checked about 2-3 years ago.

So a plus for macos Firefox implementing APIs.

I've written up a blog post on the Distance Estimation Method for rendering Mandelbrot and Julia sets in detail that is missed by the standard method.

It includes an attempt to derive / explain the algorithm.

https://makeyourownmandelbrot.blogspot.com/2024/01/rendering-fine-detail-with-distance.html

I hope next week I can record a video doing a talk-through of the algorithm and some coding too.

After some years away ... I've been doing tutorials on frameworks like flask and sqlalchemy and connexion ..

.. omg, I forgot how bad python package management is !

pip hell

rzeta0,
@rzeta0@mastodon.social avatar

@villares

initially I didn't like the idea of python virtual environments (my head is still 10 years in the past) but I can see they make sense when packages and combinations are so risky.

but common combinations just fail - even the very famous realpython's tutorials don't work !

and simple things like "upgrade all pip packages" seems like a difficult task.

still - I am grateful for the open source :)

All the code for creating Mandelbrot and Julia sets as

  • simple black/white plots
  • escape-time coloured plots
  • 3D surface plots (image)
  • detailed distance estimation plots

is freely available online:
https://github.com/makeyourownmandelbrot/Second_Edition

and it all works via web notebooks eg Colab - nothing to install!

Until recently I didn't know about the "distance estimation method" for rendering Mandelbrot and Julia fractals.

I'm still no expert but the idea is that the gradient of the orbit of z under z^2+c is higher closer to the set.

The traditional "escape" method can miss very fine sub-pixel details

Here is an example image rendered by very simple code:
