I always find there’s an interesting parallel to be made between and .

Does the fact that the inquisition and fascist contemporary evangelical churches exist make the teachings of sharing, non-violence, love and forgiveness wrong ?

Same for existence of gulags or state repression in USSR vs the possibility of a classless society not designed on exploitation and profits.

Alternative history. If the US had just given up at this point of war, all of (united) Korea would probably be in the same stage as Vietnam today. That is: just fine.

But they went on for 3 years. Killing 2-3 million Koreans to save them from communism.

Then they killed 1-3 million Vietnamese to try to save them from and lost.

1981 - Xerox Star
1984 - Mac - System OS 1.0
1985 - Atari - TOS 1.0
1985 - Amiga - Workbench 1.0

Xerox invented it and I am a big :amiga: Amiga fan here (had one) but let’s admit in terms of icons, fonts, proportions, spacing or generally speaking taste the original Apple design is still brilliant.

Mac System 1.0
Atari TOS
Amiga Workbench 1.0

If I ever find the courage to write patches for the first stuff I'll try is to do is check on in all system apps to make sure they work in my network conditions: a connection at sub 300kb/sec speed. UI not reacting on button click etc. Notably using HaikuDepot is painful. I usually go to terminal to make sure it works.

Edit: well it only happens on all my Haiku machines but not if I get say the LibreOffice package from my other computers.

How to chose a browser in 2023:

  • Chrome, belongs to the largest advertising company

  • Firefox, gets most of its income from making Google (the search engine of the largest advertising company) the default choice

  • Safari, could afford to be different but “privacy champion” Apple gets about 15 billion per year for the ad company’s search engine to be the default

@sandropennisi Also another “first impression” (since last time) . It took me a moment to find out the properties were down there and I have to drag them up. Not sure how to make this more visible , maybe just an icon.

Got my minuscule android phone. Height of a credit card. Actually useable when you don’t need to type much text. I managed to create a google account for it (not risking my main account on a 27$ Chinese device).

Runs Android 6.0 - 1GB RAM - 4GB builtin storage.

That’s @moshidon running on this.

TIL about blown up RIFA capacitors:

“The capacitor technically isn't needed, so you are ok if you just cut it out.”

“The downside of no filter cap is that you Apple II will mess with the reception of your AM/FM radio if it is too close to the computer. ;) It is all about noise coming FROM the computer. (..) Your typical household devices these days are not adversely affected by the noise.”

The heavy rain two nights ago literally wiped up the fresh rust on our corten steel planters. They actually look worse than last month.

They looked nice last Sunday after all the vinegar treatment but apparently it was a thin layer and this storm just killed it 😖

ADTPro Disk I received did boot to initial menu but systematically fails when I select serial (Error which is I/O Error). So maybe the disk drive is fried too

I see this chart and it makes me think people in Romania are richer (in percentage, not euros) than people in Germany or France.

If commies are coming to steal your home they’ll have to get them from the banks I guess.

I wonder what kind of plague must have fallen on Eastern Europe in last century for so many people to fully own their house.

Looks like my retro-oriented screen (a 4:3 Sony SDM-HS75 at 1280x1024) is dying. Shows no input on screen and then turns off 😭

Hopefully it’s just the VGA input and a HDMI to DVI adapter (ordered) will help.

How crazy is it that the Fediverse has thousands of available independents with various skills but we accept that the normalized way to hire them is through a third party company which will milk both the worker and the customer in exchange of providing trust ?

Before computers we used local trust and it was ok. We should definitely build this back on our small interlinked instances.

Successfully made 2 capuccinos after one hour without electricity and I can officially declare today a victory.

Homemade off-grid inverter of solar system can really handle max ~1500w load at best so I had to plug and unplug each machine (expresso & milk frother) at each step out of safety.

My minimalist bash script using fzf to pick an ssh server with a tmux session from a simple text file of servers.

Not a public repo yet but I’ll open it up one day if someone finds this useful. Need to remove my servers file from there first (it’s just user and IPs).

It updates servers and code on all my “main” machines with a hourly git pull in a cron. I need to make the code and data separate repos.

A shell session . User types a few letters and preview appears on top. Enter starts connection with tmux

By the way my usage of the hashtag isn’t (only) self-deprecation.

I can search for this tag on my account and find all the cool ideas I might actually bring to life “one day”.

I have pinned some tags in Mona at the bottom so I remember they exist.
