The kids wouldn’t believe it but when I was young you could google for a one-line command and not end up on three different fucking Medium Paywall articles “How did I convert *.png to *.jpg with ImageMagick - Subscribe to enjoy more of my exclusive content” from industry leaders.

I didn’t remember exactly what was the deal about Sinéad O’Connor and the Catholic Church in the 90’s that caused so much anger.

Turns out she publicly implied the Catholic Church was hiding cases of child abuse.

I guess we can say it know: well of course.

Does anyone have pointers to the 8x8 (?) pixel font that Xerox once used in its matrix printers back in Alto times ?

I only read about it in a book and would like to see it in action. Idea was that the font had most useful monochrome combinations and was used to send images with very little data. A bit like PETSCII but exclusively graphics.

How to chose a browser in 2023:

  • Chrome, belongs to the largest advertising company

  • Firefox, gets most of its income from making Google (the search engine of the largest advertising company) the default choice

  • Safari, could afford to be different but “privacy champion” Apple gets about 15 billion per year for the ad company’s search engine to be the default

Microsoft wanting to move Windows fully to the cloud is purely a revenue-flow decision, not a technological one. An attempt to stay relevant through lock-in as usual.

Capitalism is a cancer that is harmful to both people and productivity itself. You just cannot have a thing that works and stop there. Shareholders require constant cash flow and therefore constant and often useless changes.

On day here’s a gentle reminder from Brazil about who the police serves. This is the symbol for the military police of Rio de Janeiro.

The royal family on top, weapons for violence and of course a sugar cane and a coffee plant on each side because that was the business at the time. Slavery ended (legally) in 1888 in Brazil.

The 40 inch TV above my desk is too large for but looks great at 1920x1080 with a :rpi: 4 running Amiberry in a borderless 800x600 window on Ubuntu desktop. I quickly adapted a Commodore monitor image (stolen on DeviantArt 😅) to just fit behind the window’s default position.

At “native” 800x600 you get both a usable workbench and the right size for old school demos & games with 2x pixels & scanlines.

Did you know Brazil had a Mac clone in the 80’s that was compatible with 68k Mac apps ? Of course it got smothered under pressure from US government (threatening to block other imports).

This is why today you still import Brazilian commodities but rarely tech. True for many countries of course.

If you don’t speak Portuguese you may want to turn on your translator to read this story by @augustocc

@big_louse @selzero One way this would be beneficial: understanding capitalism / colonialism only allows democracy when it serves its interests. When you are in the areas 🇺🇸 🇪🇺 benefiting from it, democracy seems like a given.

When you’re in Latin America you know democracy will be taken away as soon as it contradicts the interest of investors. It’s good to look at your own country with that knowledge and see where the boundaries are.

I read a 350 page book about NeXT and it took me about 100 page to realize it was from 1993 so it missed all recent events including a billion iPhones running its descendent.

In 1993 NeXT was a (financial) train wreck and Jobs was a loser in addition to the usual asshole. It’s amusing to read this in 2023. Not a very good book for me as it has really few tech details. It’s mostly about business.
