my conservative neighbor refers to covid as “That Flu” as in “____ also went to the hospital with that same flu that took out ____”

my more progressive friends refer to covid generically. as in “yeah I’m sick again” or “my cold turned into a bad cough” or “I’m the only one in my house who isn’t sick with what’s going around right now”

not only did we scrap masks and tests we legit scrapped the word covid

just to expand on Arendt's whole banality of evil thing: this entire climate crisis, gaza genocide and a great deal of past and modern white supremacy and colonizer bullshit coasts on social processes made possible by careerism and respectability politics. the road to right now has been so polite, so professional

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

if evil is operationalized by all of us putting our heads down and doing our jobs, than it is a distraction to focus on a particular political figure or party or even group of (non)voters as The Problem. the problem is that we are all caught up in a very tangled web and it takes a lot of courage -and mutual aid- to break free & practice solidarity with the vulnerable, rather than the powerful

@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

to speak up or oppose the genteel norms and processes of colonization with any kind of consistency makes the truth seeker a 21st century untouchable. it's not that any of this is corrupt or wrong, it's that you personally are too weird too angry too insane

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@Loukas seriously! Raucous and loving community among the malcontents is the only thing with the power to flip the script

seachanger,

Injustice proceeds via long timelines of thousands of bureaucratic acts, protected by careerists who are personally invested in being unable to see anything nefarious about any of it, and of course far more concerned with not appearing as a dreaded conspiracy theorist than they are with stopping actual conspiracies

4+ years into COVID and many still missing the nuances:

Often 6ft isn't enough, but increasing physical distance reduces risk

N95s are much better, but surgical masks do help

Outdoors is safer, but you can still catch it

Vaccines reduce transmission, but don't eliminate it

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@luckytran

  • Infection can confer immunity but that immunity may not protect you for more than a few weeks or against new variants

  • multiple infections increase odds of long term health issues, which may also be true about other viruses

People shaming others to vote and saying we mustn't say anything bad about Biden/DNC makes more sense when they reveal that they think the problem is the voters, not the very, very rigged system we are forced to submit to

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@inquiline I know I’m Sarah Kendzior pilled right now cuz I’m listening to her book but she really names institutionalism a lot and I think that explains so much here — if you believe that change hinges on the good experts being in governmental office than all of this really does come down to voting (spoiler the institutions haven’t and won’t save us)

my artist friend talks about how cool it is that the world speaks emoji now, a universal language of stylized pictures. and I was thinking about how almost everyone who uses phones uses the circle face emojis to express feelings, which only works because we evolved over millenia to communicate with our faces. it’s weird but also amazing: I can look at a tiny circle with a few lines and instantly be feeling, more or less, what you are feeling

"The U.S. Department of Justice-including the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, an appointed U.S. special counsel and the solicitor general, all of whom were involved in different ways in the criminal prosecutions underlying these cases and are opposing Mr. Trump’s constitutional and statutory claims — can petition the other seven justices to require Justices Alito and Thomas to recuse themselves not as a matter of grace but as a matter of law."

Rep Jamie Raskin reveals that yes actually we can force Alito and Thomas to recuse - but Biden's people have to admit this and take action. Kinda the ultimate moment for liberal no-we-can't hand wringers isn't it

There’s a Guardian article from Fiona Harvey today, which links to https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/nov/20/richest-1-account-for-more-carbon-emissions-than-poorest-66-report-says from November last year, citing that…

the richest 1% of people in the world are responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than the bottom 2/3rds.

So how much wealth does one need to be in the world’s richest 1%?

Knight Frank had some answers to that in 2021: https://www.knightfrank.com/research/article/2021-03-01-how-much-wealth-gets-you-into-the-global-top-1

In the UK, at the time, it was $3.3 million, which was about £2.4 million.

London’s average property price is ~£700k

@lightning I see where you’re coming from and am sad that governments have memory holed covid prevention as a priority, but significant research and discussion about the virus’s origins will go on nonetheless. To me it matters that we do find out what happened, because otherwise weaponized unreality just swallows up another huge facet of our current human experience, and I do not want that particular future

@aram @globalvoices but he didn’t, and wouldn’t. the performance wasn’t about Palestine or Israel, it was a costume party and he felt super bad and apologized that the get up he chose ended up appearing to some as antisemitic. I hate running, but it's becoming abundantly clear that no amount of any variety of cycling will make me fit or help me lose weight. Upping my thyroid dose made my weight stable after five years of gaining 10lb/yr despite increasing activity and keeping the same eating habits. I read two books on menopause and they both basically said it's probably menopause but there's no scientific way to tell cuz nobody researches us. (When I ran, 15 mi/wk wasn't enough to keep the weight off either.) 🫤

seachanger,
@seachanger@alaskan.social avatar

@HayiWena since being forced into menopause by cancer treatment I’ve gained 15 lbs, after an entire lifetime of being the exact same weight. My diet and exercise haven’t changed — menopause is a bitch and it does what it does
