Jews from Arab lands are the missing piece of the Israeli-Palestinian discourse by American Syrian Jew Lisa Sayegh May 7, 2024

"...Over the past years, I have often been frustrated when I find people do not understand the trauma of the 700,000 Jews from all over the Middle East who were violently expelled from their countries in 1948 and how it resonates today. Pro-Palestinian activists who call out Israel as a “European settler colonial project” omit a critical part of the story that calls into question their claim. They ignore the Mizrahi majority in Israel who are descendants of Jews expelled from Arab lands when Israel was declared a state..."

From an artist's point of view, is there any difference between you buying a donated CD from a charity shop and downloading pirated music from a torrent site?

Neither gives the artists, songwriters, producers, publishers, or distributors any money.

Neither reports to a charts authority to show popularity.

Both have the same impact on secondary revenue like gig tickets & merchandise.

Vote now - and please show your workings.

@Edent

Charity is marginally better only because of the secondary benefit to the ones being served by the charity, but as for the artists interests, there is no difference at all.

How To Start Strengthening Your Town With Incremental Development
Will Gardner May 6, 2024

"...And incremental doesn’t have to mean slow. Incremental growth is potentially the fastest way to grow housing stock, revitalize downtown areas and fill town coffers. Large greenfield projects, despite their promise of hundreds or thousands of housing units, take years of work to come to fruition — usually with large political fights along the way. These are large, often long-shot bets that may not come through... Conversely, small infill projects can be initiated in a matter of weeks and months. As these projects happen, they attract further attention and resources to the town and create momentum for growth..."

Small infill includes accessory dwelling units, too - so called "granny flats" and remodeled garages or outbuildings. These could easily create a lot of new affordable housing.

All The Science Bubbling Beneath California’s Most Volcanic Park
At Lassen Volcanic National Park, learn all about how magma turns to mountains—then hike to the top of them. Visit California February 5, 2024

"...Lassen Peak towers over the park. It’s over 10,000 feet tall, and an example of a plug dome, or lava dome, volcano. These volcanoes are defined by their thick, viscous lava, which piles up and creates a steep dome-like shape. Lassen last erupted over a period of three years, just over 100 years ago: 1914 to 1917. In May of 1915, an explosive eruption caused a mud flow: the hot rocks erupting from the volcano mixed with snow, creating an avalanche-like flow of mud that destroyed a patch of surrounding land. This is now called the Devastated Area, which includes a gentle trail, a few enormous rocks that were once expelled from the nearby peak, and signs that tell you the story of the 1915 explosion..."

Is Degrowth an Academic Field or a Mass Movement? Taking Degrowth to the People!

By Phil Wilson, originally published by Resilience.org May 7, 2024

"...Tens of millions will either be mobilized to act, or not. The climate emergency cannot be mitigated...via private acts of conscience, nor...without a program of action and a massive base, expect to meaningfully oppose corporate reflexes. Intellectual virtuosity has limits – we would all do well to read Thoreau, but also, we must understand that his literary brilliance did not slow down the robber barons.

...degrowth, cannot be titrated in order to make it palatable to either profiteers or addicted consumers. It is inherently radical and based on the assumption that any alternative will be catastrophic...many...articles rather casually assumed that degrowth might be employed within the context of reform rather than revolution. There are no historical events that support such optimism..."

What Liberal Elites Don’t Know About Rural Americans Can Hurt Us

By Wendell Berry, originally published by Barn Raiser May 7, 2024

"...There is no interest in remedies for the bad ecological and human effects of mining, or in a farm bill that would make agriculture less destructive of land and people, or in ways to preserve the ecological integrity of our forests, or in ways to prevent the corporate destruction of the local economies necessary to support local communities—to name only a few rural needs.

...The space program is not the highest human accomplishment. All problems cannot be solved by science and technology. Good farmers are not mindless drudges who can be easily replicated from the “labor pool” or the Class of 2023..."

A world in crisis requires we recover the common good beginning in the places where we live

By Patrick Mazza, originally published by The Raven May 6, 2024

"...The first step is to understand the essence of the systemic transformation that is required. The common thread in our multiple global crises is the elevation of narrow interests over the common good. Certainly, the crisis of ecological overshoot reflects blindness towards our dependence on the planetary commons. For instance, making the atmosphere a dump for fossil fuel pollution while cutting down forests and tearing up soils are major drivers of climate disruption. Increasing global conflict & military expenditures reflect putting national interests over those of the world as a whole, despite the threat of nuclear extermination. The obscene and increasing concentration of the world’s wealth in so few hands screams out the prevalence of private interests over the common good..."

Underground House
Las Vegas, Nevada
A luxurious doomsday bunker hidden beneath an unassuming Las Vegas home offers the best of subterranean suburbia.

The unique home was built in the 1970s by Girard “Jerry” Henderson, a former Avon executive. He and his wife Mary lived in this underground mansion as their primary residence. He was a majority partner with Underground World Homes, Inc. in the 1960s, which promoted subterranean health and safety benefits as well as “the ultimate in true privacy.”

...The underground property was last purchased in 2014...The Underground House is private property. You can view the above-ground home and yard from the street, but venturing onto the property without permission would be trespassing. Occasional tours and events are held inside the subterranean bunker. Soon, the property will be available for private events, historical tours, and more..."

Pork is inherently unclean, every molecule, right down to its dna. No matter how small you slice it, it's still pork. Growing the cells in a lab doesn't make them "not pork." Slaughter is not the issue. There's no such thing as kosher pork slaughter. Pork is always treif no matter what you do to it. Hope this helps.

National Day of Prayer continues to advance Christian Nationalism

Apr 30, 2024 Andrew L. Seidel

From American United for Separation of church and state:

"...You heard that correctly – in a nation where the First Amendment of our Constitution demands that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,” Congress established a National Day of Prayer...

The law requires the President of the United States to issue a proclamation recognizing the National Day of Prayer. Some local and state governments similarly recognize the day. Although supporters may claim NDP welcomes all people to participate, it ostracizes nonreligious people, those who don’t pray and many religious minorities. Both the history of NDP and the rhetoric of those who continue to promote it make clear that NDP is mainly for Christians..."

Denying pregnant people emergency abortion care under EMTALA advances Christian Nationalism

By Kalyn Mizelle McDaniel May 01, 2024

"...Abortion bans violate the separation of church and state by imposing one narrow religious viewpoint on everyone. Removing EMTALA protections from pregnant women goes a step further by advancing the Christian Nationalist commitment to relegating women to second-class citizenship. According to complementarianism, which is intrinsically intertwined with Christian Nationalism, cisgender woman have a distinct role. Motherhood and submission to men are key parts of the separate role women play. The incapability of the role is evidence of its second-class nature. Complementarianism is diametrically opposed to the liberation of women, and fittingly, limiting the instances in which their wellbeing can be protected in emergency rooms aligns with that ideology..."

Dear European based LGBTIQ+ people.. (so basically everybody).

Today I attended an event in #Amsterdam organized by @waag @DeGroene @gemeenteamsterdam and the #oBa Amsterdam public library called #StateOfTheInternet

Featured speaker this time was Euro Member of Parliament @kimvsparrentak who passionately spoke on the need for a more free Internet detached from #bigTech and more focussed on #Democracy and real #Social interaction.

When confronted with her presence on X and Insta, and the lack of active presence here on the #Fediverse we promised to help her.

Please help us get a decent follower-base here and follow her account right now, before she even gets a chance to get more active. A follower base of more than a 1000 people will surely help her convince her party members to spend time and money on a real presence here.

I used a cut out of the image posted by @sicco in this post: https://todon.nl/@sicco/112372340250592627 thank you for that Sicco.

That's the commercial mindset, though. Their goal is not interaction and getting info out there as far and wide as possible. They only care about eyes on their material if it generates revenue somehow. And the fediverse doesn't. Their goal is fundamentally at odds with the goals, such as they are, of the denizens of the fediverse, who just want conversation and information.

I hear you. You're definitely not wrong. And I wouldn't touch a tesla with a 10 foot pole. There are some ways to mitigate the tracking problem. One, don't subscribe to the car internet service. Don't use Android auto or other big name stuff - a plain bluetooth connection works fine, I've found. Use firefox browser on your phone, too. Not google. Etc and so on. And of course, if you are going for unsanctioned medical care or some such, don't use your own car at all. Remove the batter from your phone or don't take it if you can't. Yall know the drill...
