Oddly this morning I don't seems to have any newsletters in my inbox. So no science or sustainability articles to post - yet. Maybe later?

What a time to be a Texan. So my husband was approached by another employee at his work who uttered “you know, maybe H*tler was onto something”. Nearly 20 years in Louisiana I had never personally experienced as much antisemitism as I have in the 5 months since moving back to Texas. Then you have the government here waging war on LGBT folks, free speech, protestors, and the disabled. I don’t see how this gets reversed.

Lols, "we want to have an uprising against you but you have to provide all the supplies."

Good luck with that in real life. Can't wait to see them hand their "demands" over to the white nationalist christo-fascist theocracy they're ushering in as their LGBTQ friends and family are carted off to internment camps.

I'm sure that will work fine, right?

Those FEMA flood plain maps are hopelessly out of date. Here in our area, at least, the city has had to tear down some homes that were not in the official flood plain, but flooded so often it was beyond ridiculous. They are not keeping up with development and changing topography or runoff issues, and banks just go along with the official maps and then pretend to be surprised long after the developers have moved on to their next stupid project.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s Little-Known Original Drawings for the First Edition of “The Hobbit” By Maria Popova

"...People have celebrated Tolkien as a writer for years — you haven’t been able to get away from him since all the books of the century polls. But The Lord of the Rings has always been the focus since it was published in 1954 — it’s a much more grown-up, significant book. It has overshadowed The Hobbit as a more old-fashioned, children’s book, which has become known in the context of The Lord of the Rings. The anniversary allows us to move the spotlight back on to the book which started it all.

A rare piece of cross-disciplinary creativity from the mind of one of modern history’s greatest creators, The Art of the Hobbit is equal parts literary treasure and treat of art, exploring the notion of the author as designer — a particularly timely concept in the age of self-publishing and disciplinary cross-pollination in the making of books..."

Your soul doesn’t have junk in the trunk - Or, what Catholic apologists and Richard Dawkins agree about
Avatar photo by Adam Lee Oct 10, 2023

"...Are intersex people God’s mistakes?

The heart of Graebe’s argument is his insistence that God doesn’t make mistakes. He says it’s impossible to have a “male soul” in a biologically female body, or vice versa. Therefore, he concludes, anyone who believes themselves to be transgender is self-deluded:

"To deny that essential unity is to say that God made a mistake. …Jesus says, “This is my body,” but we cannot say that of ourselves. Our body belongs not to us, but to God, and he will not be mocked."

Again, there’s an obvious reply: How does this theology account for intersex people?

As I wrote in Christians against pronouns, it’s objectively true that there are human beings who defy simplistic notions of a gender binary..."

@kevinrns

Even if they're not physically intersex, there are a ton of genetic, epigenetic, biochemical and endocrine issues that affect gender expression - not to mention all the environmental toxins, phyto-estrogens and endocrine disruptors in literally everything now.

No reasonably intelligent person should be calling being LGBTQ a "sin" or "abnormal" or "delusion" because that flies in the fact of every historical, scientific, and cultural bit of knowledge that we have.

THEIR culture rejects scientific reality due to bronze age nonsense written by men, putting words into their god's mouth.

False words.

And their viewpoint needs to be rejected entirely by govt and society, not enshrined in bigoted laws.

You're Not a Fearmonger. You Have Sentinel Intelligence.

Some of us can hear the future.
Jessica Wildfire

"...If you have sentinel intelligence, your brain can aggregate and sift through extraordinary amounts of information in a very short period of time, especially when it comes to seeing latent or hidden dangers. You don’t get stymied by what Clarke and Eddy call the “magnitude of overload.”

In some ways, it’s a superpower.

Research on sensitive individuals confirms how sentinels and Cassandras think. Social psychologist Tsachi Ein-Dor writes that some of us "are chronically hypervigilant and constantly alert to potential threats and dangers. Other individuals, once alerted to a threat, are self-reliant and likely to take protective actions rapidly and effectively." In other words, we're hardwired alarm systems. Groups are more likely to survive when they have a mix of people who are skilled at detecting, communicating, and acting on threats to their survival..."

Song lyrics have become simpler, more negative, and more self-focused over time by Eric W. Dolan May 1, 2024

"...Previous research has highlighted how musical lyrics can influence emotions, foster social connections, and even shape cultural identities. [S]tudies have shown that lyrics can act as a barometer for societal mood, reflecting changes in attitudes, values, and social norms. For instance, an increase in negative emotional content in lyrics might mirror rising societal tensions or cultural shifts towards more introspective or confrontational themes.

Furthermore, music serves various psychological & social functions, from regulating emotions to facilitating communication among groups. This makes the study of lyrical content particularly relevant for psychologists, sociologists, and cultural historians interested in the interplay between art & human behavior..."

Why societies grow more fragile and vulnerable to collapse as time passes
4.25.24 by Luke Kemp and BBC colleagues,Features correspondent

"...The ageing trend was there even when we excluded dynasties.

...Our findings are supported by promising studies on "critical slowing down". Before a complex system undergoes a large-scale shift in structure, or a "tipping point", it often begins to recover more slowly from disturbances. The ageing human body is similar: injuries can take a longer toll when you're older...

The next steps will be to investigate what fosters societal longevity, and what causes growing vulnerability. States could be losing resilience over time due to variety of factors. Growing inequality, extractive institutions, and conflict between elites could heighten social friction over time. Environmental degradation could undermine the ecosystems that polities depend on..."

How to unite local initiatives for a more sustainable global future

By Vasilis Kostakis, Nikiforos Tsiouris, originally published by ScienceDirect May 1, 2024

"...In a state of emergency, it is audacious to place all our hopes for tackling the ecological crisis and wealth inequality in technology –worse even, in technology that is yet to materialize... High-tech is not unsustainable in its essence, but its scale and mode of production in the capitalist realm are.

...the crux of the matter is profoundly political. The development and production of technology in the modern era are intricately interwoven with wealth inequality and environmental deterioration. Technology is not being produced in a vacuum, thus it is not neutral. On the contrary, it is highly influenced by the decisions of manufacturers, legislators, consultants, designers and everyone else involved –directly or indirectly– in the process..."

In the 70s there was an "appropriate tech" movement. Nobody was suggesting everybody had to go back to the caves and live in squalor to have a sustainable economy.

But what we have now is certainly NOT sustainable, and it's going to involve a certain amount of degrowth and ratcheting down energy use to make it sustainable - and the people in the wealthy western nations are the ones who are going to have to ratchet down the most.

The people with no mercy in their hearts are the ones laughing all the way to their swiss bank accounts from the influx of aid, and sacrificing their own people on the altar of war instead of just releasing the hostages, which they could have done at any time to stop the war.

War sucks. That's a fact. Europe was bombed to smithereens by the allies to dislodge the German troops in every town and village. The Germans could have surrendered to spare the civilians, too. But they didn't, because they were fanatics, just like hamas.

Fundamentalist Christians and Muslims do not care about others, they only care about money and power and complete control by their theocracy. Hamas could have stopped the war at any time, just by turning over the hostages to ANY international authority. Not to Israel, anybody. And they chose not to.

Hamas cannot be allowed to go on. No theocratic govt is legitimate, but one willing to rape & mutilate civilians must be eliminated. By whatever means.

shekinahcancook,
@shekinahcancook@babka.social avatar

@Jennifer @nevo

In your world, there is no way to wage war. You're fine if Jewish families get bombed by rockets every day. And apparently we're just supposed to sit here and take it?

The average people in Gaza were often the ones hiding the hostages. They could have been burning up the phones with tips to expose where both hamas and the hostages were.

But again, they chose not to, knowing what the consequences would be. They're fine with destroying Israel by whatever means are necessary.

You're complaining that we're fighting back. So bye now.
