How to unite local initiatives for a more sustainable global future

By Vasilis Kostakis, Nikiforos Tsiouris, originally published by ScienceDirect May 1, 2024

"...In a state of emergency, it is audacious to place all our hopes for tackling the ecological crisis and wealth inequality in technology –worse even, in technology that is yet to materialize... High-tech is not unsustainable in its essence, but its scale and mode of production in the capitalist realm are.

...the crux of the matter is profoundly political. The development and production of technology in the modern era are intricately interwoven with wealth inequality and environmental deterioration. Technology is not being produced in a vacuum, thus it is not neutral. On the contrary, it is highly influenced by the decisions of manufacturers, legislators, consultants, designers and everyone else involved –directly or indirectly– in the process..."

The Red May Day and the Green May Day

By Andrew Curry, originally published by thenextwave May 1, 2024

"...The Red and Green May Days can be described in ways that create the kinds of opposites that narratologists get excited by:

Green is a relationship to the earth & what grows there-from. Red is a relationship to other people & the blood spilt there among. Green designates life with only necessary labor; Red designates death with surplus labor. Green is natural appropriation; Red is social expropriation. Green is husbandry & nurturance; Red is proletarianization & prostitution. Green is useful activity; Red is useless toil. Green is creation of desire; Red is class struggle. May Day is both.

The Red May Day has its roots, in particular, in the bloody history of the American labour movement, and in particular in the city of Chicago, which in the late 19th century was an epicentre of both industrialisation & globalisation..."

How Indonesia’s Toba Volcano Changed Human Evolution

The massive supervolcano eruption 74,000 years ago has been blamed for nearly killing off our species. The emerging truth is much more interesting - by Gemma Tarlach April 29, 2024

"...Stone tools have been found both above and below layers of Toba ash deposited in northern India, the Arabian Peninsula, and elsewhere, showing that humans were present in those areas before and after the catastrophic eruption. They found ways to weather the actual event and any changes in climate that followed. And in March, after decades of research in a remote corner of Ethiopia, a multidisciplinary team determined that humans there survived shifts in climate likely caused by the distant eruption by changing their diet and, quite possibly, innovating a new hunting technique: archery..."

Podcast:
Crazy Town 86. Escaping Growthism: Wendigo Economics, Mystery Houses, and Becoming the Bear

By Asher Miller, Rob Dietz, Jason Bradford, originally published by Resilience.org May 1, 2024

"...Grow or die. It’s the governing principle of companies, investment portfolios, national economies, and even philanthropic foundations. Oh, and cancer. Asher, Jason, and Rob lay bare the stats on everything from human population, energy consumption, global GDP, greenhouse gas emissions, and the size of cars and cruise ships, before concluding that the global economy should be named after the Wendigo from Algonquian folklore. They turn to the natural world for examples of self-regulation, along with promising new economic frameworks and on-the-ground models, for how to end Wendigo economics before it ends us.

Warning: This podcast occasionally uses spicy language."

Housing isn't meant to be affordable
Michel Durand-Wood April 25, 2024

"...According to data from the US Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, indexed home prices in the US are 88.1% higher than they were in 2005, near the peak of the “housing bubble,” making it the second highest of the G7 countries. [Literature fans will recognize that as “foreshadowing.”]

...Turns out that a return to Victorian-era practices of locking out an entire class of people from land ownership tends to lead to civil unrest and revolt...

...We’re screwed if housing prices keep going up. We’re also screwed if they go down. That’s the trap..."

Among the ancestors - By Chris Smaje, originally published by Small Farm Future April 29, 2024

"...Those who say that radical changes are necessary to meet the challenges of our times but can only treat with scorn the possibility that part of those changes might involve reversing the breakneck capitalist urbanization of recent decades do not strike me as people who are genuinely wrestling with the enormity of the changes upon us. They strike me as people who are desperately trying to cling to the status quo. ...I think the body of our collective contemporary world political economy is manifestly dying, while its mind in the form of its public culture is largely in denial. But the denial can’t mask the frailty of old age in our political economy. ...I believe a major thing that lies behind this is a fear of individual death..."

Eco-Collapse Hasn’t Happened Yet, But You Can See It Coming

By Stan Cox, originally published by TomDispatch April 30, 2024

"...In short, this sort of indefinite expansion of the U.S. and global economy into the distant future is doomed to fail, but not before it’s crippled our ecological and social systems. In its 2024 Global Resources Outlook, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) reported that humanity’s annual consumption of physical resources had grown more than threefold in the half-century since The Limits to Growth was published. Indeed, resource extraction is now rising faster than the Human Development Index, a standard measure of well-being. In other words, overextraction and overproduction while producing staggering wealth aren’t benefiting the rest of us..."

Who would be best for the US economy? Well Biden of course.

"Trump’s vow to corral immigration might sound like he’d bring order to a chaotic situation. Yet there would be an economic cost Trump doesn’t acknowledge. The US needs more immigrants, not fewer, to offset a declining birth rate and an aging population and help pay for the retiree benefits of the next several decades."

In case you didn't know, the current rise of fast food prices is NOT because they have to pay a higher wage. They've ALL been raising their prices on what was considered a "value menu" for the last 3 years.

Corporations don't care about satisfying the customer. They're more worried about satisfying their stock holders. They are more then happy to lie and fuck you over so that their evaluation doesn't dip.

Stop eating fast food. Find a mom and pop or small local chain instead. Better value.

shekinahcancook,

This! We avoid chain restaurants like the plague. There are so many good little ethnic restaurants, or greasy spoon mom & pop shops out there! There's no reason to give a crappy corporation money.

From the Workers Circle:
This May Day, champion workers' rights by urging your Members of Congress to support the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act.

Ensuring the right to organize and bargain for better wages, benefits, and working conditions is vital for a fair and inclusive economy. But corporate-friendly laws in the United States have reduced worker power. The PRO Act fights back.

Among its provisions, the PRO Act would broaden the scope of workers covered by national fair labor standards and prohibit the replacement or discrimination of workers who participate in strikes. The PRO Act would also establish penalties and injunctive relief against entities that fail to comply with National Labor Relation Board orders. It puts real enforcement power behind workers' rights.

Join me in urging Congress to take action on the PRO Act this May Day.

We need to require that all voting districts be regular polygons, even if it means people on one end of a street are in a different district from people on the other end. (except natural borders like rivers and county / state boundaries). There are plenty of computer programs that could do this, creating equally shaped districts with nearly equal population (ie the polygons would be smaller in more dense areas, larger in sparsely populated areas) and would completely disregard party affiliation. This is the only way to break gerrymandering.

I have yet for any pro-hamas supporter to explain how if Israel is doing a "genocide" on muslims or arabs, then why are the Israeli mulsims and arabs NOT fleeing the country of Israel as fast as they can?

How odd they don't seem to be in any danger. Isn't the purpose of a genocide to exterminate an entire culture and religion?

No, they're just fine. They're still voting, running for office, holding office, going to uni, getting jobs, owning homes, and being free to be muslims, or atheists, or lgbtq - and women have the same rights as men. Imagine that.

They're not running away. Wonder why?

It's as if there isn't any genocide against Arab Muslims going on at all.

I have been trying to warn people for a number of years, the evangelicals who blindly support all things Israel (predominantly the Netanyahu administration) ARE NOT OUR FRIENDS. They want a strong Jewish state so Armageddon can be brought about and usher in the second coming. They long for Netanyahu's war with Iran because they view Russia and Iran as Gog and Magog. Those two nations have to wage war against Israel to usher in the end times, where guess what happens to us? We either convert and accept Christ as king or we burn in the lake o f fire. They don't support Israel for being a home for us, no it's merely to usher in their insane end times prophecies. Every time I see us get into bed with these types it absolutely kills me.

I'm unclear why when protesters block Jews from going to class the Jewish kids just take it, make a video, and send it to the news.

Protesters have rights and civil disobedience is a time honored rite of passage in US universities.

At the same time they can't stop Jewish students from walking on campus.

Don't take a video. Just go through them.

Everybody's tired of it.

What would be really fun is a counter-protest of Native Americans yelling "go back to Europe, you colonial squatters" to the student protestors. But the tribes have more class than that, lol.
