I'm a middle-aged single dad living on the Atherton Tablelands, Australia. I work in Aged Care. Hobbies include tabletop roleplaying games, casual computer gaming, short hikes, and wincing in pain. Take it as read that I believe in all the usual left-wing, egalitarian stuff, but I rarely post about any of it.

I talk about Sweden way too much for someone who isn't in any way Swedish. Sometimes I even try writing in Svensk.

Amazing how much more enjoyable this place has been since I muted everything related to the virus and Twitter. Muting works.

@si_fuller@aus.social avatar

@timrichards I sometimes regret some of the excellent posts I must be missing out on, just because they share words with subjects I've muted.

Maybe superhero movie fatigue is real. I like comic books but not often the movies based on them, increasingly pedestrian and derivative.

The Marvels: Brie Larson film opens disastrously at box office https://www.smh.com.au/culture/movies/what-went-wrong-as-the-marvels-opened-disastrously-in-cinemas-20231113-p5ejlk.html

si_fuller,
@si_fuller@aus.social avatar

@timrichards I don't know, they've been talking about superhero fatigue since, what, the first Avengers movie?

But it is interesting to see that most of the top grossing Marvel movies are also my least favourite.

Lovely day here at Middle Park Beach. I can see a cruise ship is in at Port Melbourne. That explains the confused passenger on the number 12 tram who I redirected to the 109, as he was trying to get to a ship.

Facebook has realised that I'm into and . It mistakenly believes that this is a good reason to bombard me with jokes pertaining to Star This, Star That and the Lord Have You Got Bling movies. Apparently people who like these genres but are not interested in "franchises" and never watch TV series are a rare demographic.

si_fuller,
@si_fuller@aus.social avatar

@mrundkvist I started again on Facebook the other day because it's the only way my kid's school chooses to communicate.
For reasons that elude me, Facebook has decided to bombard me with accounts (plural) devoted to photos of young women driving tractors, of all things. What the hell is the market for that specific combination?

si_fuller,
@si_fuller@aus.social avatar

@mrundkvist Slightly more cleavage, but only slightly. And much less interesting tractors.

Sad and weird to listen to Soundgarden's excellent song "Blow Up The Outside World". Chris Cornell, then 28, sings pretty explicitly about contemplating suicide, and eventually he killed himself at 53. )-:

Just found out there is a version of the Iliad where, after the death of Achilles, his mother Thetis turns into a seal and takes revenge by hunting down Helen.

There is an ancient Greek horror story hidden in there somewhere, about Helen being hunted by a vengeful pinniped...

@TarkabarkaHolgy I like the ghost seal in Eyrbyggja Saga. It just kind of popped its cute puppy head out of the floor boards and stared, and all these manly vikings fainted.

    Somewhat regretting choosing the café closest to Docklands Library today. It's in a building appallingly designed for cold weather - big sliding doors that regularly funnel cold air through, cafe door open to that blast, cafe window open for coffee sales. Fine on hot days, horrible on cold days.

    si_fuller,
    @si_fuller@aus.social avatar

    @timrichards Europe has this down to a science, of course. Sensible exits, double glazed windows, effective insulation, you end up more comfortable and save money heating and cooling in the long run. They have less of a "why bother" culture, of course.

    All arguments that the 700s should count as part of the Period can equally well be used to argue that the 800s should count as part of the Vendel Period. It's a pointless thing to try to change.

    si_fuller,
    @si_fuller@aus.social avatar

    @mrundkvist I like the idea of middle-aged vikings sitting around in the year 830, saying "remember the vendel period? The awful clothes, the awful hairstyles, so embarrassing."
    "Oh Thor, remember those ridiculous elaborately decorated helmets we used to get about in? Mine had pigs all over it."
    "Yeah we thought we were so cool. The music was pretty good though."
